Allen: The problem with the Commanders is at the quarterback position. They aren't getting any consistency at all right now from Mark Brunell. They don't know what they are going to get from Brunell. Some days, he can complete 20 passes in a row and then there are other days when he's lucky to string together four completions in a row. He has to do a better job giving this team a consistent performance. Right now, he's only hurting Washington with his up-and-down play.

Hoge: The one thing I've noticed about the Skins is they aren't playing defense like they did last season. The defense hasn't stopped the run or gotten after the quarterback consistently. That's a large part of the problem but one that can be fixed. The other problem is this isn't the Brunell of five seasons ago and that's something that can't be fixed.

Salisbury: The Commanders' problem is on the defensive side of the football. They don't seem to be executing their schemes every down. The game against Tennessee was a game in which the defense should've been salivating and looking for an opportunity to put up some great numbers in terms of sacks and interceptions. Instead, the Skins just kind of sat around and didn't play with the fire you should see out of a team this good. The Commanders have to sit down and look in the mirror and see whether they have what it takes to be a playoff squad.

Schlereth: I think right now the biggest issue has been inconsistency in running the ball and stopping the run. Tennessee put it on them running the football and so did the Jaguars. When the Commanders are shutting down the run they can be very good, especially with all the different looks they can give teams. But they can't be an effective defense without stopping the run. They also need someone to start getting a big-time rush on the quarterback.
Theismann: The Commanders don't seem to have a good mix of offensive personnel outside of Clinton Portis. They have a bunch of receivers who are the same type of player. They need a big, dominant player who can take over in the red zone because right now the short passes aren't getting the job done inside the 20. They have to get a guy who can go and attack the ball over a defender because teams are killing them in the red zone. They also need to get better production from Brunell. He does a great job at times, but there are times when his decisions are hurried and he makes poor throws for no reasons.

They'll just have to wait until next season to draft him with their high first round...oh, wait. Nevermind.

I thought Joe was gonna say that its tough to have a great record when you are in the same division with teams like Dallas and Arizona.

"whats wrong with the Commanders?"
easiest question in the nfl.and the answer is daniel snyder.he shot for the moon and mortgaged the future on a bunch of guys who had really never did alll that he is paying them for. brunnell is not 25 anymore, their wr's are average at best other than moss and moss is a one deminsional player.portis is good but when you can't pass more than 3 yds it's hard to run. he has too many super star coaches and not enough super star players. i still say you can have the best coaches in the league and they won't make a single play for you. coaches are important but the players are the most important

This is the culmination of what many people have been saying for years about the Commanders. You can't mortgage the future year after year and expect to buy a Super Bowl, whether it's by buying coaches or trading draft picks for marginal players or overpaying for under producing players.

Look at the contract ARE got. Why? Because he trhew a TD pass in the SB? It sure the hell wasn't his posted numbers at the WR spot. Is a punt returner worth that much? Ditto with Archuleta. What has the kid done to justify that type of contract? The Skins may very well be picking high in next year's draft. Unfortunately, they have morgaged their draft status as well.

They have also mortgaged any type of depth with the majority of their cap space going to the top end of their roster. How much money is tied up in Shawn Springs? How many times has that guy seen the field this year? That's a lot of dough riding the pine. What about when Portis was down? Ditto on the pine money.

And one last jab. Many Skins fans have come to this board claiming Taylor's superiority over Williams. How many TDs has the thug been beaten for this year? I can count ONE against Roy and a blown coverage on a TE (both came in the same game). Taylor? It seems every time you see a completed pass in the endzone against the Skins, there's Taylor. Right in the mix. HTTF.

That is all true...but...there is someone else responsible as well!

St. Gibbs, that's who...!! He is supposed to be a HOF coach, he is supposed to know how to build a team, he should know what is going on with all that mess, however, he lets it happen when he should know better if he is so smart...

It takes two to tango, and St. Gibbs and the Midget make a wonderful pair!

The end.

Actually Joe "Norman Einstein" Theisman makes a good point for once. Even though it's not their only problems, but some thoughts of intelligence leaked through all that crap in his head.

They should ask the Yankees. It's the same answer.

Spending $$$ necessarily equate to wins on the field.

Not sure why you would include Todd Collins on that list; he's a backup QB and isn't paid nearly what the others are.

I will tell you what is wrong with the Skins: there is no dedication to the run. Giving CP the ball 14 times against one of the worst run D's in the league is absolutely pathetic. That was a team that we should have played smashmouth Commander football against, but we went all soft and pansy on them. CP should have had at least 150 yards to go with his 2 scores. Very frustrating.

If what you say is true, then who is at fault? Could it be your HOF coach, St. Joe "the spitter" Gibbs?

Can you admit that?

Seeing as how Al Saunders is calling the plays, the immediate blame belongs to him. However yes, Gibbs should have made it clear to Al that we needed to run the friggin' ball in the second half. Gibbs is involved in the game-planning as well, so of course he deserves some of the blame; just like any coach in a losing effort.

It would seem that if your team hires, with Gibbs making all aprovals, a OC that is known for running Pass happy offense like he did in KC.

It is also pretty obvious when they go out and Sign ARE and Lloyd that they are going to try and become a passing team.

When you sit and think about it...Why would anyone be surprised by it?

Nobody gave the correct answer.

Nothing.

What was wrong was all the jock riding the media was doing by thinking they were a good team.;)
