ESPN Clayton: Market for ex-Cowboy Greg Ellis... Signs with Raiders *Merge*

since when?

They ran a hybrid version of the 3-4 at times over the past few years with Rob Ryan as their defensive coordinator. Derrick Burgess played with his hand up and down at times and might end up being shipped off to New England.

Now that John Marshall is running their defense, it remains to be seen if they will do that as much, but he also is comfortable with it after he's experienced with it at Carolina and with the 49ers. Ellis might be playing the old "elephant" role that they used to use.

At this point, with the raiders, I think any FA that signs with them can not use any excuse except that they signed for the money. Which is kind of funny because of all the whining he has done the last few years while trying to say it is not about the money.

Good luck greg...you are going to need it.

I think his biggest worry was he never got the money he should have been getting.

When he got cut I believe that was his #1 priority regardless of where he had to play.

Well good luck in Oakland Greg.

I like the guy, always did, and I'm happy with the nearly 80 sacks he brought to Dallas in his career, but it's pretty clear that Greg chose the Raiders for a final payday. No one willingly signs there unless it's about the money.

Ive always like Greg and wish him the best but what a joke of a move...I guess he wants money and not a title before he retires...

Oakland.

Where NFL players go for their last pay day and lose football games.

Seven teams interested and he chooses Oakland?

:lmao:

I'm happy for Ellis. I'm sure it was a financial decision but I also don't think he didn't factor in the weakness of the AFC West. The Chargers are very talented but were 8-8 last season. The Broncos lost their Pro Bowl QB and may end up losing Brandon Marshall. Add that to the pourous defense the Broncos have and it will be a long season in Denver. The Chiefs are rebuilding as well. They traded away their best offense player for years in Gonzales and Larry Johnson isn't exactly happy there either. Cassell will have a learning curve too.

The Raiders are poorly run and poorly coached but their defense has been pretty good for the past few seasons. If they can get decent QB play and have a solid running game, they amazingly enough will be in the thick of things in the weak AFC West.

raiders are a pretty young team, greg will provide some needed leadership and veteran experience in the locker room.

Jerry and Al are friends too, so I imagine jerry did some talking on greg's behalf.

Good luck Greg, I will be pulling for the raiders till you leave.

Seriously. Makes his priorities all that much more obvious. You can argue whether or not he was a good teammate, positive locker room presence, or positive influence on rookies till you're blue in the face......but one thing is for sure, the man values money a hell of a lot more than he does winning.

So who were the other teams in the running and what were they offering contract wise?

What a landing spot.

Al Davis' senility is in full effect.
That is the last place I would go if I were any Free Agent.

Bet Greg wishes he woulda shut his mouth now. Guess it really was about winning a championship, huh Greg? Chasing dollars, thats all he's ever wanted.

Same situation with Owens, when their teams are 2-11 at the end of the year and they are no longer relevant, they are going to wish they were still on the big stage.

I see where you're going with this. I obviously dont have all of that information, but I feel confident enough making that statement based on the history of both parties involved. The Raiders make overpaying aging or overhyped players routine. There is no reason to think they didn't do so here, either.

....and as far as winning? Do I really have to explain? From earlier reports, there were several teams that were interested that would've provided him a much better chance of being on a winning team.

he makes it hard to argue that he signed for anything other than money.

He never provided much of that here, so I wouldn't count on it...

I am sure the fact that Davis' gnarled up hand was signing the biggest check had a lot to do with it.

Glad he is not in the NFCE. Best of luck to him in the AFC.

Not sure what all he did at the end to get himself cut but he earned his trip to Oakland and can now live with that.
