Wow this is terrible IMO

Hope all the people who wanted Parcells gone are happy now. If this is true with Garrett, JJ is definitely taking back control of the franchise. Not good news on any level (scouting, drafting, free agency, what toilet paper to supply the locker room with). Bad bad times ahead. Come back BP

Someone's got the finger on the panic button . . .

I don't think Jerry is going back to the old Chan Gailey/Dave Campo days. Jerry likes to win too much and his ego takes a beating when the team is losing. Plus I think he learned a lot about football management from Parcells. Plus he and Parcells appear to have a great relationship.

That being said, Maybe Parcells is not going anywhere. Maybe he stays here in the front office. He said he was tired of coaching, not of being in the NFL. At that point it would make a lot of sense to bring in a young hot candidate like Garrett.

Plus people have to remember that Garrett was pretty much an assistant coach while he was here as the 2nd string QB. Plus he has learned from the likes of Norv Turner, Jimmy Johnson, and Nick Saban.

Let's not panic just yet.

As unlikely as success would be with Garrett as a HC, it's hardly a lock for failure. I wouldn't be thrilled with it, but I'd certainly be open-minded, Ginger-kids jokes notwithstanding.

no howdy-doody jokes? shame on you

It all depends on the interview, which unfortunately we can't be apart of. If Jason blew JJ away - why develop him. Jason is very smart - he has seen 3 Super Bowl coaches in action. If he has a staff in mind, a play book, a general plan for what he wants to do and how to get there. I'm all for it.

Both interviews, Jason only said one word..

The first interview:

Jones: You know your title will be Head Coach,, But I will tell you exactly what to do, who to draft, where to play them and may call th plays if I feel like it,, right?

Jason: YES

Second Interview:

Same as the first!!

If he hires Jason to be HC.. this will be a repeat of every coach between Jimmy and Parcells,, what a shame.

You forgot all the "uhhhs" and "errrrs" from Jerruh.

I half agree with you - but to play devil's advocate...

This is as much Parcells idea as Jerry's. He wanted Payton to take over, but Payton was offered the NO job, and Bill couldn't ask him to wait a year. Bill has tried at other places, like NYJ, to leave a replacement. He missed out with Payton getting away, maybe he's trying to get Garrett in here, in some cpacity, to take over eventually.

Just sayin'.

I highly doubt Payton would've left if it had been made this clearly to him that he'd be the successor to Parcells. He took a big risk by taking over that terrible Saints team. If it didn't work out...he'd be another Norv Turner...just without the successful resume as an assistant. Seems like a huge gamble to me if you're guaranteed the HC job for the Cowboys after Parcells retires.

I doubt Payton was given any assurance that the job in Dallas would be his. This is Jerry running the show afterall. Who knows what took place before Payton left. All I know is that nobody would care about Payton right now if he had went 5-11 this year...so all this talk may not mean much anyway. Lets see how he does after 4-5 years with the Saints. Hopefully Jerry isn't stupid enough to buy into the Payton fire either and try to find another one in Garrett like people are suggesting.

Campo at the time of his hire wasn't a lock for failure either.

For now, I'll assume Jerry's not dumb enough to give the HC job of the Dallas Cowboys to an inexperienced QB coach.

Parcells probably wouldn't have guaranteed anything since it's not his decision and he didn't know how much longer he wanted to coach. But, if you've got a chance to be a HC, and that's what you want, you take it, regardless of what job may be on the table in the future.

I think that whoever we hire will be approved by Parcells. So that helps me deal with it, even if it is Red.

Let's not panic just yet.

First off, Nick Saban didn't do much of anything in the NFL so that's great news that Garrett learned from him. Bad bad point by you though. Second, Gailey was on a great staff with Cowher and Campo was around the exact same guys (for longer) that you mentioned Garrett was around. Essentially, you're stretching here and trying to convince yourself that this will work out. Unfortunately, it is ok to panic because JJ has a terrible track record and is basically an idiot when it comes to managing the franchise. This would be fine if it were 2002 and we were trying to replace a 5-11 coach, but our team is on the brink and we need to win now and win it all now. Anybody who says otherwise is delusional.

This is why it hurts so bad to lose Parcells. But hey, at least we have Wade Philips coming in to interview soon. That's really settling.

Name one other team that was sniffing around Garrett as a HC candidate. This is a reach. Offensive coordinator, maybe, but nobody fathomed giving this neophyte the big job. Outside of one coach in particular, Jerry doesn't have a track record for brilliant hires or luck. He doesn't deserve our trust.

I also forgot that Jason Garret was with the NY Giants with Sean Payton andTom Coughlin.

It would not surprise me if Parcells has talked to Payton and Coughlin and got a thumbs up.

Plus he has worked under 2 superbowl quarterbacks as well.

The more I think about it, the more I think he's going to be the next head coach.

No Way you give the HC job of the Dallas Cowboys to a guy who has only been in coaching a year or so and has never even been a coordinator. Being a HC is about a lot more than knowing Xs and Os. Even Jerry can't be that stupid!

This is not a knock on Jason because he may be a great HC candidate one day, but he isn't ready for this job at this time. There is no comparison to Sean Payton who had been a QB coach and OC for several years in the NFL and had learned from an all-time great HC.

He was with Fassel, not Coughlin. He also worked with Gruden and Wannstedt.

I want a young fresh mind, Garrett has been around good NFL coaches and has really been involved in the front and back of NFL(playing and coaching), id be more willing to take a chance than go with an older coach. The new NFL is about fresh ideas. I'm excited and cant wait to see who we would bring in as D-coordinater......

Obviously it wasn't a Parcells decision to make, and so this is indirectly JJ's fault for not working this thing out. I understand that most people wouldn't turn down a HC job, but if the situation to stay is right, you're going to do it also. Essentially I'm saying that you can probably blame Payton leaving more on JJ than the Saints coming knocking.

It's no more of a reach than what Pittsburgh or Oakland did. And at least Garrett has been to the Super Bowl and knows what top teams do to win.

I would rather have Garrett than either Lane Kiffin or Mike Tomlin.
