ESPNews: Jason Garrett Top Candidate

And Jimmy Johnson knew everything about the NFL coaching when he came to Dallas . . . .

And you can't run that "well he did great in Miami" line because coaching in college is not the same as coaching in the NFL. That's why JJ was 5-11 in his first year here.

It's not a reach. When you got guys like Lane Kiffin getting head coaching jobs with zero NFL experience, I would rather have Garrett at least he has the NFL experience as player and coach.

You lost all credibility right there sweetheart. I'm glad you're comparing our team and situation to that of the Raiders, who are, for a reason, the worst team in the NFL. That's why they are drafting number 1 in case you were wondering.

If we're looking to mirror the moves of the Raiders, then we should probably be hoping for that number 1 pick next season too.

I think you need to take your knowledge and wisdom over to extremeskins.com. They have a similarly intellectual fanbase for you speak amongst there.

uh...that was the point.

Hey, my sarcasm is a little off this evening . . .

I will have to find the article, but I heard that Miami only gave Dallas until tomorrow evening to make a decision about Jason Garrett.

So I think you will see them hire him as OC anyway, with the caveat that he could be head coach as well.

So he met with Parcells too

if Parcells gives his recommendation for it is that going to make people feel any better?

I can't speak for anyone else, but if Parcells says go, I have so much respect for him that I will get more excited. I still won't have any real expectations for our QB coach thrust into the spotlight, but I'll feel better about it.

No problem. As for Garrett, OC is one thing. Even then I don't see where he's proven anything to warrant it, but he is supposed to be an up and comer. But HC would be a major reach.

wow. I will admit I thought all along this was for the OC position but I am quickly warming up to the possibility of having Garrett as the new HC. He's a cerebral gentleman and was one of the best backup QBs in the league. He probably could have started for quite a few teams. He's very humble, very likable, and has a desire to win win win. Count me in with the Garrett for prez crowd.

I'm intrigued but haven't jumped on the Garrett wagon for HC yet.

Yeah, put me in the undecided category for now. Tell me who the D Cordinator is and I would have a better idea.

I will not cry one bit though if Garrett is named HC.

You lost all credibility when you said our we are ready to win now. Did you watch any of our last 6 games? Our Defense making second string fullbacks look like Probowlers. We can't rush the quaterback . . . and our Linebackers and Safeties cant' conver Tight Ends to save their lives. Our offense could not stay on the field with all of the turnovers and interceptions. That New Orleans game was an embarrassment. And It's true we came within a field goal of beating the Seahawks in the playoffs, but how do we let a team that beat up stay that close to even win the game? That game should not have been that close. Seattle had to bring in cornerbacks from off of the street. Pete Hunter was selling insurance before he was signed by the Seahawks. And you say we are ready to win now? You need to get your facts straight. We are not even close to being where we need to be. If anything we took 10 steps back near the end of the season.

IMO we are in rebuilding mode too.

If you think you are so smart who do you want as HC? You know Cowher and Fischer are off limits. Give me a name that makes sense . . You keep spewing the sky is falling . . . let's hear who you think will work instead of being so negative and insulting . . .

Fact of the matter is even as a OC is kind of a reach. Why not let him be that somewhere else and if he proves out hire him then as an HC unless we're doing so well with whomever else that we dont need him. Yeah I know circumstances at that time could prevent it from shaking down like that but whatever.

Actually I think we're all just talkin for the sake of talkin cause I dont believe for one second this guy has any shot to be the next HC... no matter what the "reports" are.

Well, it's back to the mid 90's. Jerry brings in a puppet he knows he can control.

He's clearly trying to find the next Sean Payton.

well which is it? do you think Payton would have been a puppet hire too?

and as fyi, Payton wanted Garrett as his OC too, but was denied

We arent in rebuilding mode, that is absolutely silly. This team has top level talent on it, a bad stretch under a bad coaching regime does not equal rebuilding.

I don't know if there is any validity to the ESPN breaking news or not. But it sure seems like a lot of people around here believe it to be true. I'm just saying consider the source. If true, I believe the OC more than the HC.

i'm actually moderately neutral but mostly because he seems to have come out of nowhere and wasn't our "our" list to start with. now that he is i'm wanting to see more talk about him and his technique and system. he was highly regarded here as a backup and very smart at the time, so like a few here, i can warm up to this one depending on how it all falls out.

I say bring on Jason. Why not? You people are so hung up on him just being a QB coach nad not a coordinator. Big deal. That doesn't mean anything. How did Norv Turner, Dave Wandstedt, Bill Callahan, Dennis Green, Romeo Crennel, Pete Carroll, Steve Spurrier, and Nick Saban all turn out? All of these guys were either hot coordinators or hot shot college coaches. Oh yeah the common thread is they all sucked as NFL head coach's. So being a coordinator doesn't mean ****.

Micheal Vick is great and he's not even a back up! Oh my gosh I think i'm onto something. Vick should be our next coach for the same reasoning you have, except that Vick is even better than Garrett was!

First off, I didn't lose any credibility whatsoever. Chicago was in shambles with their QB situation as much as we were in trouble with our D and they're representing the NFC right now. And if I'm not mistaken, we beat the team representing the AFC right now, so get a little creative if you're trying to argue back, rather than just use my words which only apply to you. Our team is ready and should be there for as many reasons that you can make out for the Bears and Colts being there. The bobbled snap was a freak incident. There's nothing that anybody could say to prove we couldn't have gone to Chicago and beat the Bears that next week. They didn't play great against Seattle at all, and we were better than both teams at the time. If you want to stay negative about it and think of only the bad things that occurred, then of course you would be happy with gambling on a coach and demoting us to Raiders status like you're doing.

I thought you had left for extremeskins.com by now anyway. They could use you.

Finally, my opinion is that JJ is going to blow a first round pick anyway. Anyone remember David LaFleur? I guess Quincy Carter counts too since no other team had any intention of selecting him the first day of the draft. Why not invest a first round pick for a quality coach then? If that and a lot of cash is what it takes to get Cowher, then why not do it? At least you're bringing in a proven coach who can put the right people in place to make our D solid and bring Romo along. He did the same thing with the Steelers D and Big Ben...and he has big game experience. There won't be any transition time either. He is fairly young also. If we do whatever it takes to get Cowher, and it still fails, then I'm all up for going with these other garbage options that may or may not end up working out. I'm just saying that it would be nice to do whatever it takes to get the best coach available here. That's what we did in 2002 with Parcells, and he brought us out of three 5-11 seasons. There's no reason to not do it again this year.
