It's no more of a reach than what Pittsburgh or Oakland did. And at least Garrett has been to the Super Bowl and knows what top teams do to win.

I would rather have Garrett than either Lane Kiffin or Mike Tomlin.

So now we're putting ourselves on the same level as the worst team in the league and a team that finished with a below .500 record when making new coaching comparisons? That's great.

I'm coming into this discussion late but I just wanted to go on record as being in favor of bringing in Jason Garrett. In fact I suggested this in one of the early season "What if Parcells Leaves" threads and was roundly ridiculed for it but I have thought that Garrett would become a great HC someday since he was still a player. It is in his blood, he is a student of the game and he has some fire in his personality.

And if he doesn't come here as HC I would still like him as OC.

Name one other team that was sniffing around Garrett as a HC candidate. This is a reach. Offensive coordinator, maybe, but nobody fathomed giving this neophyte the big job. Outside of one coach in particular, Jerry doesn't have a track record for brilliant hires or luck. He doesn't deserve our trust.

It's what Jerruh does.

Switzer had zero sniffs by NFL teams before or after he came to Dallas. Same with Campo. Gailey did get a college HC job, but no one has offered him one in the NFL except Jerruh.

I'm sure even Al Davis is thinking Jerruh is off his rocker.

No Way you give the HC job of the Dallas Cowboys to a guy who has only been in coaching a year or so and has never even been a coordinator. Being a HC is about a lot more than knowing Xs and Os. Even Jerry can't be that stupid!

This is not a knock on Jason because he may be a great HC candidate one day, but he isn't ready for this job at this time. There is no comparison to Sean Payton who had been a QB coach and OC for several years in the NFL and had learned from an all-time great HC.

the same Sean Payton that was a failure in NY to the degree that he got his play calling duties ripped away in NY...was highly questioned when brought to Dallas and even while here...had never been a head coach...steps into a team that was a TOTAL mess..and not only has an insane season his first year but wins coach of the year?

Garrett having success wouldnt be a stretch...its the way the league is going

The point is that we hear a name leaked and we all rush to rationalize it as a potentially good or great hire. No.

I think we have a lot of delusional fans who haven't yet gotten over that Thanksgiving day victory when Aikman and Rodney Peete were both out.

Garrett saved us one day, for one game people. I know that's awesome and one of the most exciting moments in franchise history, but it's a little different to crown him as the head coach. Lets make a little banner or something for him and maybe put him in the Ring of Honor for it if you want. He can even drive Staubach's convertible as they're bringing all the old inductees out onto the field. I'm sure we can all mutually agree on a better way to celebrate him than making him the head coach.

Yes. Every one is looking for that sexy pick. Especially it seems if he was a former back up in Dallas.

True. He's much more interested is appearing clever than being clever.

C'mon.. the only reason anyone is even beginning to buy this is cause the guy was with the team once upon a time so theres at least some degree of familiarity.

If he was someone else that you never heard of but with the same basic credentials (which obviuously wouldnt be far-fetched) you wouldnt give it the time of day.

First off, Nick Saban didn't do much of anything in the NFL so that's great news that Garrett learned from him. Bad bad point by you though. Second, Gailey was on a great staff with Cowher and Campo was around the exact same guys (for longer) that you mentioned Garrett was around. Essentially, you're stretching here and trying to convince yourself that this will work out. Unfortunately, it is ok to panic because JJ has a terrible track record and is basically an idiot when it comes to managing the franchise. This would be fine if it were 2002 and we were trying to replace a 5-11 coach, but our team is on the brink and we need to win now and win it all now. Anybody who says otherwise is delusional.

This is why it hurts so bad to lose Parcells. But hey, at least we have Wade Philips coming in to interview soon. That's really settling.

And Jimmy Johnson knew everything about the NFL coaching when he came to Dallas . . . .

And you can't run that "well he did great in Miami" line because coaching in college is not the same as coaching in the NFL. That's why JJ was 5-11 in his first year here.

It's not a reach. When you got guys like Lane Kiffin getting head coaching jobs with zero NFL experience, I would rather have Garrett at least he has the NFL experience as player and coach.

And with the way or defense played the second half of the season, we are not ready to win it all now. We have a long way to go. To think we can win it all now is delusional . . .

I think if he had a solid D-coodinator, he would do fine.

You don't find lightning in a bottle every day. I'm anxious to see what next year brings to NO.

He was with Fassel, not Coughlin. He also worked with Gruden and Wannstedt.

Oops my bad. I always get those two mixed up, and I don't know why.

Speaking of coaches, what is Fassel doing these days?

That's because it's the freakin' Raiders and Al Davis. They are the worst team in the league for a reason.

Nobody wants that job which is why they first offered it to the USC asst HC and then had to finally give it to their 31 yr old OC.

If we're just trying to one up the Raiders then we'll be drafting #2 real soon.

IRVING, Texas - Miami Dolphins quarterbacks coach Jason Garrett, a former Dallas quarterback, interviewed Wednesday with the Cowboys for their vacant offensive coordinator and head coaching positions.
ESPN reported Wednesday that Garrett impressed Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and team vice president Stephen Jones and has emerged as the top candidate for both the offensive coordinator and head coaching positions. Garrett also met separately with Bill Parcells, who retired Monday as head coach.
The Cowboys also sought permission to interview San Diego defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, San Diego general manager A.J. Smith said.

Al Davis has no room to talk with the reach he just put in as head coach.
