ESPN's Todd McShay "Rams are angling to trade up for the No. 9 overall pick "

You're not factoring in screwing the Commanders at the same time. That's gotta be worth at least a fifth.

Rams are at the point where they still need quantity as much as quality. It would be stupid to give up a third that could be starting for them this year.

I disagree with that. They have a lot of young talent and you can't build a good team with a lot of players that will never be better than mediocre. You might get a guy that starts 2-3 games as a rookie and then is never more than a backup. Whereas Julio Jones has 10 year pro bowl written all over him. A little more improvement on the offensive line and improvement of the defense over the next couple years could get them to the top of the division. Nobody that's available at 14 is going to have that big a difference for them unless one of the top pass rushers fall.

Who cares if they do? He's not going to do anything there with that team.

Drafting at 14 is a bad spot to be. You give up Tyron Smith or another blue chip player and arm Sam Bradford. You move down to 14, and you will not get Tyron Smith. The Commanders will probably drop down and let someone else draft Smith (Minnesota or Detroit or New England) or simply draft him themselves.

Yeah, let's give up the blue chip OT (Tyron Smith) and get an extra third round pick, so we can pick Robert "Buster" or Jason Williams or James Marten.

I have only seen 4 games worth of Smith and while he is good especially in pass protection, his play is not blue chip.

Hes too inconsistent.

I like his do not get me wrong but I could live with say Solder and another top 75 pick.

Just please not Costanzo. Orakpo, Tuck et al would eat his lunch.

If the Cowboys are as high on Smith as we are being lead to believe then this would be risky.

If the Cowboys have comparable grades on Smith and let's say Costanzo and Carimi, and all 3 are available at 9, then I would make the trade but I'd want their 1st, their 3rd, AND their 2012 2nd. I'm not running a charity here.

That would probably be the price for us to get to 6 too.

Ive been saying all along olny PP, Tyron, or Quinn are worth 9. The next tier all runs pretty deep and if its not one of the 3 I just mentioned they mine as well trade down.

Tyron Smith has the size, length, athleticism, agility (footwork), strength, and balance to be an All Pro OT. Plus, he has a mean streak. He was 285 and 19 years old on film, and his film and big time upside has him worthy of a top 10 pick. The value is there at 9, and need meets value for the Cowboys. It couldn't be set up any better for the Cowboys, and time will tell if the organization sells it's soul for Patrick Peterson or an inferior OT and an extra chance to draft another "Buster" or Jason Williams.

If the Cowboys are smart, they will stay at 9 and draft Tyron Smith. Again, Smith is 20 years old, and his upside is huge. All things being equal, Smith will play at 32 during his 13th year. Smith's run blocking is exceptional, and his presence on the right side of Dallas' offensive line will open up the entire playbook and field for Felix Jones and keep Tony Romo off his back.

I'm not big on Castonzo, either. He will have problems anchoring against the bull rush early on, especially on the right side. Solder has strength issues, too and doesn't play with the wide base that Dallas likes.

Tyron Smith plays with a wide base and has the ability to sink his hips and use his leverage and strength to his advantage in pass protection. Smith has the most powerful hand punch in the draft, and his ability to mirror and recover due to his almost 37 inch arms helps set him apart. Smith's second level run blocking is elite, and I've seen him pancake guys on the line.

Picking where the Rams pick is a bad place to be, and that is why they want out, so they can get one of the blue chip players they want.

If Dallas doesn't sell their soul for Peterson (a CB), I think they will draft Tyron Smith at 9. Smith is certainly one of the very best players in this draft, no matter what you call it.

Thats one thing that I have seen about Smith hat i have really liked. When he comes out of his stance he looks natural bending at the the knees and hip staying low.

I just saw him slow to react at times and he would get out of position and lunge. He was inconsistent in that regard and I do not know enough about football really to know why he was doing that and if its something that would hamstring him in the NFL for a career.

I do trust our scouting department though as long as we have a first round pick.

In all honesty, I'd rather Dallas trade up than acquire more picks.

We've seen what the carpet-bombing effect can produce. Whole bunch of a guys you have to cut later.

Bundle up and get a guy you think is a star.

I don't think it would be. Unless they absolutely nail the pick, a 3rd rounder isn't going to make them any better.

However, if they snag a top flight WR they will be better next year and moving forward.

Moving up to a get a WR would be a much better move than sitting still, missing out on the WRs and having an extra body.

Guys this draft is not that strong to trade down. If Dallas trade down that better get a number one for 2012.

If they are that desperate, make them pay--swap firsts and give us your second

I tend to lean this way myself.

If we think Smith is going to be a great tackle then pull the trigger. I'm down to trade up and get Peterson too, I hope we aren't picking in the top 10 for a long time so take advantage of this opportunity.

And pretty much this.

agreed
i really think we should just stay at 9 and draft smith unless we trade with NE for 17 and 33 where we might get carimi (at 17) and then back into late first with the #33 to get someone like pouncey. then we can still take kendrick ellis or the miami CB with #40.
trading back to 14 for a 3rd does nothing except lose us smith.

That WR would help for sure. In their case, I agree.

But WR really is a position were some gems are often found in the 3rd round or later:.

Think Brandon Marshall, Mike Wallace, Marques Colston, Johnny Knox, Mike Williams, Jacoby Ford..

not to mention all of the other position players.

Drafts are made, imo, by the success of your middle round picks.

But again, I'm with you on SL being able to use that stud WR.

This.

Here is a list of the Cowboys 2nd and 3rd round picks from 2000-2010:

2010:

2-Sean Lee (TBD) Looks promising.

2009:

3-Jason Williams
3-Robert Brewster

The Cowboys had two third round picks, and both of them were busts. Robert "Buster" was cut and passed through waivers and is on the practice squad. Williams was cut.

2008:

2-Martellus Bennett

A great blocker who has big potential as an overall TE, but he is playing behind a future Hall of Fame player. Can he ever reach his true potential behind Witten?

2007:

3-James Marten

At least "Buster" Douglas knocked Mike Tyson out.

2006:

2-Anthony Fasano
3-Jason Hatcher

Fasano couldn't perform the F back role he was drafted for. He was a poor blocker. Importantly, he let a sure TD pass go right though his hands and hit him in the face mask (in the 2007 Divisional playoff debacle). Hatcher never became a starter and was role player, who appears to be on the way out. He was over drafted. NE wanted him in round 4.

2005:

2-Kevin Burnett

Good cover linebacker but left after four years and never started. His rookie year was a disappointment. He was drafted to play outside, but he was not that type of player. That led to (gulp) Bobby Carpenter in 2006. He wasn't fit for that role, either.

2004:

2- Julius Jones
2- Jacob Rodgers
3- Stephen Peterman

Rodgers had a shoulder injury and should have never been drafted. This was on Parcells. Julius Jones had one good year and fizzled fast. Peterman suffered a bad leg injury his rookie year and couldn't over come it and was released.

2003:

2-Al Johnson
3-Jason Witten

Johnson suffered a bad leg injury and couldn't recover and was released. How Jason Witten lasted that long, I'll never know. It was pure luck. Witten will go to the Hall of Fame some day.

2002:

2-Andre Gurode
3-Derek Ross

Gurode became a multiple pro bowl player at center while the gamble on the character of Ross became a bust.

2001:

2-Quincy Carter
2-Tony Dixon
3- Willie Blade

Carter was over drafted and was cut due to drugs. Dixon was a slow S who was burned over and over and over. Jerry Jones helped build a Super Bowl team in Seattle by giving his first round pick away.

2000:

2-Dwayne Goodrich

Dallas gave their first away for Joey Galloway. Goodrich has a great junior year, but his play drops off big during his senior year. Dallas still takes him in round 2. He suffers a serious injury and ends up in jail.

There were 19 2nd or 3rd round picks. In my opinion, 15 of them were busts. Hatcher and Burnett never became starters despite being picked in rounds 3 and 2 respectively. Burnett is gone, and Hatcher is on the way out. Peterman and Johnson suffered catastrophic leg injuries.

The Cowboys have trouble hitting on one pick in these rounds. I just don't get passing on a blue chip, cornerstone offensive linemen (the best offensive linemen in the draft, Tyron Smith), so you can draft an inferior player in round 1 and get an extra chance to draft the next Robert "Buster".

Only Andre Gurode (2) and Jason Witten (3) have become starters, and they hit big time. Bennett is a solid player but expensive in round 2. Lee (2) has big promise.

Again, as you can see, the Cowboys have trouble hitting on one third rounder, and some want to move down and pick up another third round pick. In fact, the 3rd round has been down right ugly for the Cowboys. It's a house of horrors. Look no further than 2009 to see the results of the two third round picks.

Again, take note of the second round when Dallas just has one pick and see the 2 years that they had two picks (2004 and 2001).

Sean Lee
Martellus Bennett

Anthony Fasano
Kevin Burnett
Julius Jones
Jacob Rodgers
Al Johnson
Andre Gurode
Quincy Carter
Tony Dixon
Dwayne Goodrich

2004 was a year where Dallas had two second round picks. It produced two busts. (Julius Jones and Jacob Rodgers) 2001 was another year that Dallas had two second round picks, and the results were two busts (Carter and Dixon). Look how lonely Andre Gurode, Bennett, and Lee are.

That second round has been ugly too. It's in Freddie Kruger territory. It's a nightmare. Are you sure you want to dip into that round twice?

I'd take the blue chip, cornerstone offensive linemen, Tyron Smith at number 9 and celebrate. If I picked twice in round two, it would be done by moving up from round 3. Choose your poison.

I'm not giving up the best offensive linemen in the draft, so I can get an inferior player in round one and an extra pick of inferior players.

We don't make the choices, but the Cowboys would be wise to look at the names on this list before they do something very stupid.

Tyron Smith gives Dallas B.J. Raiji value at number 9, except the value is in the offensive line.

The reason Jerry should not trade is because he always gets snookered by the other team. This is a prime example:

Everyone remembers the disastrous, failed, damaging, franchise killing draft of 2009. Using the Trade Value Chart - look at this. Jerry traded his number 2 choice (51st pick) with a trade value of 390 points. In return he gets Buffalo's #3 which is the 75th pick (trade value 215) and Buffalo's number 4 pick, the 110th selection (trade value of 74). So he gives up 390 points and gets 299 in return for a net loss of 91 points which is the equivalent of the 100th pick. Go figure!

Oh, and yes, Andre Levitre who Buffalo selected with the Cowboys #2 has been a starting OL ever since his selection.

Do not trade down -- Jerry!-Co Sign
