IRVING – Cowboys starting left tackle Flozell Adams will miss the rest of the season with a right knee injury, coach Bill Parcells said Monday. Adams, a two-time Pro Bowler, left Sunday’s game in the third quarter and never returned.
“Somebody’s going to have to play there,” Parcells said. “So we’ll just make the best of what we got.”
Adams appeared to injure his left knee in the first quarter, but only missed one play before returning. He then left the game for good in the third quarter with a right knee injury. Parcells said Adams tore his anterior cruciate ligament.
“Once he went back in, he couldn’t push on the guy too much,” Parcells said.
Third-year player Torrin Tucker will probably replace Adams, but Parcells said the club would explore signing another player. Tucker started 13 games last season at right tackle before being benched.
Asked how Tucker played Sunday, Parcells said, “Some good, some bad. He was just a little up and down.”
Parcells was a little more upbeat about receiver Patrick Crayton’s right ankle injury, saying, “There’s a small chance it’s a little more favorable than we first thought. First of all, he didn’t break his ankle like we first thought.”
Crayton will undergo an MRI test Monday to determine the extent of the damage. Parcells said X-rays revealed some chips in Crayton’s ankle, which could be the result of an old high school injury. If that’s the case, Parcells said Crayton probably has a “bad ankle sprain,” which would keep him out for about a month.
“We’re kind of rooting for that right now,” Parcells said.
He wasn’t ready to say whether Crayton’s injury would open the door for receiver Peerless Price, who’s been inactive the past three games. He said Terence Newman, Marion Barber III and Price would be the candidates for Crayton’s punt return job.
Parcells said he wasn’t sure whether linebacker Dat Nguyen and running back Julius Jones would practice Wednesday.
“I’m going to wait my turn, wait till I’m healthy, and I’ll be out there,” Jones said after the game Sunday.
Anthony Thomas and Barber received the bulk of the carries in Sunday’s game. After the game, owner Jerry Jones said rookie Tyson Thompson was punished for being late to an extra meeting last week. Parcells denied that Thompson was late for a meeting during Monday’s news conference.
A few minutes after Parcells addressed Thompson’s situation, Jerry Jones made a rare appearance at the back of the news conference. He stayed for a couple of minutes and then headed back toward his office.
