They've tried. Drafting Lawrence and Gregory, Drafting then re-signing Crawford. It hasn't worked out as they hoped obviously. Let's allow Taco to play even a few NFL games before burying him already. Collins appears to be on his way to being a presence inside. Perhaps the only thing they haven't done is attempt to sign a premier free agent DL like a Vernon or Suh. But I can't fault them there.

Agree they've invested but unfortunately it was in garbage

I love how people defend this team as if we've been knocking on the door of a championship the last few years...

We've been to the playoffs twice in seven years under Garrett and he is 1-2 in the playoffs...

We've been investing in offense since before Garrett was head coach and we've ignored defense the entire time to no avail. The investments we did make on defense were always in the secondary instead of up front where most plays are determined.

Maybe that's more reflective of Garrett than the players, heh?

The FO seems more adapt at picking good offensive players. Its not that the club doesn't pick defensive players...its more like they don't pick the best ones available.

You're never going to pick DE studs if you're picking at the bottom of round one. Jerry puts his chips on Offense because that's what sells tickets to his big stadium. Defense may
win championships but, selling out the stadium brings riches. There's only so much money under the cap.

I would love to be wrong, but I don't think Taco Charlton is going to be the answer to our pass rush woes. I think next year we'll see him playing a lot more at left end replacing Lawrence.

I can certainly see us in the position of needing to draft a defensive end and defensive tackle high next year.

I think we're stuck with Crawford again in 2018, but after that, he needs to be gone. Knowing that the team needs to start taking the line more seriously.

2018 1st rounder - Collins - 2018 2nd rounder - Charlton
mayowa - irving - paea - tapper

Depending on how well we do this year I would certainly think about trading up for Arden Key or drafting Harold Landry.

I think we do have the fortunate situation of having a stacked roster outside of defensive line and safety now, that they have no excuse but to invest in the line. Stop trying to get Marinelli to squeeze water from rocks.

I think the defensive line is going to continue to cost us games against playoff caliber teams.
Just because they don't go after the guys you want doesn't mean they aren't trying to go after guys. If JPP were to have been avail that's who they were going after. Teams just don't let des go. Something to think about

Bizarre timing for this thread coming off a draft where they invested a First Rounder on the DL.

2016: I guess you could complain about not taking a D-lineman high in last year's draft. But Bosa was taken at 3. And you're not going to convince anyone that DeForest Buckner or Leonard Floyd would have been better picks at #4 than Zeke.

2nd round comes around and they were going to draft a DE with that pick, but Cleveland sniped their guy a few picks before (Ogbah). So they drafted Jaylon. 3rd and one of the 4th round picks were spent on the DL - Collins and Tapper.

2015: Took Gregory in the 2nd, who was a consensus top 10 talent in that draft. Signed Hardy, who was regarded as a top 10 DE in the league. Extended Tyrone Crawford, who was 25 and coming off a breakout season.

2014: Traded up for Lawrence in the early 2nd.

Be upset that the picks/$$$ they've invested haven't worked out recently, but don't say they haven't tried.

Good stuff, you nailed it.

It's one thing to be frustrated that the players they've gone with haven't worked out. But blame the players like Hardy and Gregory for that, not the organization. Both of those guys had the ability and a shot at redemption and both of them blew it.

Your timeline gives an accurate depiction of exactly what did happen, and it's definitely shows an investment in the DL.

Historically since I been a fan(1998), we haven't had much luck trying to make an it splash in free agency on the dlinemen; Wiley, Glover, Hardy were all disappointments.

Oliver Vernon and JPP would be the starting DEs on this team easily. Both were available as free agents.

We would be Super Bowl bound with those two. Throw in Landon Collins who we should have picked instead of Byron jones and it's a lock!

Ok now that's off my chest, I hope we have something in tapper and taco! Go cowboys!

I think you gotta see what you got this year before determining what you need next year
DE is the most likely need but time will tell

JPP was franchise tagged.

There was very little to choose from in terms of DEs that actually made it to free agency this year. The good ones generally either re-signed with their team or were franchised.

JPP was not a free agent this year. He was franchised. He was a free agent in 2016 but it was unclear how well he was going to play in the future because of the missing fingers.

Vernon was an huge risk. In 4 years with the Dolphins, he only had more than 7.5 sacks once. There were also questions of how well he would hold up because many thought he had more than maxed out his 6-2 frame.

I'm still waiting for the free agent DE to become available that I really regretted that the Cowboys didn't sign.

The only free this off-season that I regret them not signing was Terrelle Pryor for 1-year, 6M; although, I do understand that it would be difficult to have an inexperienced WR playing together with Dez. The team has to have at least 1 WR that knows the offense.

Four D-linemen drafted in the top three rounds over the last four drafts. That is one out of every three picks in the top three rounds. A 1st, two 2nds, and a 3rd. That is an average of a 2nd round pick every draft for the past four years.

Nine total D-linemen drafted in the past four drafts out of 35 selections, over 25% of the picks were for the D-line.

Not enough? Should be more 1st rounders? Who do you throw back? Two of the three previous 1st rounders were 1st team All Pro in their rookie seasons, suggesting they should have gone D-line is a hard sell.

2017 - rnd 1 - Taco Charlton
2016 - rnd 3 - Maliek Collins
2016 - rnd 4 - Charles Tapper
2015 - rnd 5 - Ryan Russell
2014 - rnd 2 - Demarcus Lawrence

?????
And Gregory
And Crawford
And Hardy
And Thornton
Plus two picks for Lawrence

So If theY wouldve made BETTER use of those picks and assets, itd be a way different story.

Still for all we know Collins and Taco..maybe Tapper too...could end up being good.

Collins for sure!! Vernon would have been nice...did/do the Cowboys have the free money to sign big name FA's.
