7. Tony Romo

Dallas Cowboys
Pct. Dislike: 32%
Underrated and underappreciated. That's life as quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys when you don't get to the Super Bowl, regardless of your eilte play.

This is exactly what it boils down to. The guy puts up great numbers, and has the look of an elite player at times, but if you aren't winning Super Bowls as the Cowboys QB, your numbers really won't matter when it's all said and done.

Staubach retired in March 1980. The film with the term "America's Team" was highlights of the 1978 season. That leaves one year. The film was released at the beginning of the 1979 season.
You are correct. Memory flaw. I should have double checked my "facts." Thank you.

By the way, Boxing Writer Bert Sugar wrote a book entitled "I Hate the Dallas Cowboys, And who Voted Them America's Team Anyway?" The book has a slew of contributing writers from all over including many former players. It is quite funny to me how many of them had no idea when the nickname began.

Difference is these other QB are hated by opposing fans not their own fans. lol

That's what's sad about this list and all the other hate lists Romo keeps ending up on it's mostly a result of fans of his own team.

Simple. He's the starting QB for the Dallas Cowboys and he's very good.

That's something that only Cowboy FANS come up with to make themselves feel better about Romo continuing to end up on lists like this. No player who made that list is on there because of the team they play for or because they're a good player and people hate them for being good. It's preposterous for anyone to think that especially with Romo who many have a negative perception of due to his big game performances. Brady is on the list because of the way he's been carrying himself lately due to the frustration of his own play and the play of his young WR's. His ranting and raving during games has put people off and it got so bad he had to apologize for his body language. I gave my opinion why every player is on that list except for Romo and most know why he keeps ending up on these lists. One FAN claimed that popularity and dislike often go hand in hand which is true to a certain extent and he used the Lakers and Yankees as examples. I'm sure there's hate lists and most popular lists with both the Yankees and Lakers on it but I doubt you'll find one most popular list with Romo on it. Romo is a good guy but some have an issue with the amount of money he makes when all they see is one playoff win on his resume and the big mistakes he makes in critical games.

A lot of the fans of his own team got put off with him years ago with him parading around with Jessica Simpson and his trip to Cabo with her a week prior to his playoff game with the Giants. Some got put off with him because of his interest in golf which many felt was talking away from his football preparation which is ridiculous. Him attempting to qualify for the US Open made it appear to some he was more interested in golf than football. Romo has done nothing to win these fans back over the years with his play in elimination games. It seems like every summer we see a Romo fat thread on the board which tells you some fans don't think he's dedicated. There's a love/hate for Romo amongst fans of his own team. After last season it seemed like half this board wanted him traded. Most didn't want to pay him a large contract. Fans were fed up after what happened vs Washington in the season finale and wanted to move on from him. Those who have convinced themselves Romo ends up on these lists because he's a great player who plays for the Dallas Cowboys are not living in a world of reality.

Well, the Cowboys are the most popular team in sports now, and apparently Romo is amongst the most hated players in the league.

The Cowboys may be the most popular team but they're not winning and a lot of people put that on the QB.

Undrafted to multi-millionaire, Pro Bowl quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, lover of hot blondes, scratch golfer and HE WEARS HIS HAT BACKWARDS!

What's not to hate?

Yep, We all want the same thing and that is a championship. I don't waste my time with comparing him to Roger or Troy for the simple reason those were different teams made up of HOF caliber players both sides of the ball and those were great teams. Tony has the talent and if this group can come up with a consistent offense and defense then he will have his chance to get what Roger and Troy have. I think Dallas is fortunate to have a QB the caliber of Tony Romo.

There is only one problem with your discussion here. The Cowboys were never called America's Team while Roger was still playing. He retired after the 1979 season, and that was the year NFL Films Editor Bob Ryan dubbed the team America's Team. He did that after Roger had played his last game.

Ahh, so he was called "Captain America" even though the Cowboy were not yet called America's team. Interesting. Thx

What's very sad is FANS like you who are either in denial or simply refuse to come to grips with why Romo continues ending up on these lists. A least some here are clued up enough to know that it's the fans of his own team that help put him on these lists. No fan base has more fans than the Cowboys they're all over the country and they're divided on Romo. We see the division here and it's clear fans are split. Everyone knows he's an excellent QB during the regular season that's indisputable his numbers back it up but he's being judged on his big game performances and the standards Staubach and Aikman set winning multiple SB's. Not many things will cause a QB to be disrespected more than continuously folding in the games that matter most. There's a love/hate relationship with Romo amongst Cowboy fans. We all love his production but a majority of fans are frustrated that he can't play or produce to the same level in elimination games. It's about playoff wins and championships for some fans and it's about production and statistics for others. If Romo is productive FANS love him regardless if his numbers lead to nothing. Staubach was admired, respected and idolized for how clutch he was in critical games. He was a winner and people love winners.

Prior to Staubach the Cowboys could never get over the hump and it all changed when he became the QB. The same team that lost SB V won the SB the following year because Roger Staubach was the QB. He was blessed with the great ability to come up big when it really mattered in some impossible situations. Pressure brings out the best in some players and the worst in others. Pressure brought out the best in Staubach and it brings out the worst in Romo. Staubach was at his best when games were on the line. Opponents feared him especially in the final minutes. There wasn't a player during the 70's more popular and admired than Roger Staubach. The Book of Manning which aired a few weeks ago on ESPN showed Archie back in the 70's holding Peyton and a reporter asked him who his favorite player was and he said Roger Staubach.

That's the way it was during the 70's Staubach had more fans than any player in the NFL. Most of us became Cowboy fans because of Roger Staubach. He was magical when it really counted and Romo is the complete opposite. It's not the opponents that fear Romo in the final minutes of games it's the fans of his own team that fear he's going to screw up. He can play unbelievable for 58 minutes only to end up folding when it's all on the line. This is why he's so disrespected and the fans of his own team are so spilt on him. It's a FACT and if some of you are so blinded by your Romo sexuality that you think it's the media that's created this negative image of him and fans keep putting him on these hate lists all because he's the QB of the Dallas Cowboys then you're seriously in denial.

some of us were fans before Roger. I agree that Roger got us over the hump. He took over a team that made the SB the year before with Morton but he did go to a SB team that had future HOF players on both sides of the ball.
