Vitriol hate for Staubach outside of Cowboy land.
People flat out could not stand him...and for no good reason except that Dallas was called (or called itself, according to many fan bases) America's Team and he was considered the extremely nerdly, goody two-shoes QB that some called captain America.

Growing up, I lived in Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina and New Orleans. Unless someone was a Cowboy fan, the could not stand Roger Staubach.

There is only one problem with your discussion here. The Cowboys were never called America's Team while Roger was still playing. He retired after the 1979 season, and that was the year NFL Films Editor Bob Ryan dubbed the team America's Team. He did that after Roger had played his last game.

Staubach retired in March 1980. The film with the term "America's Team" was highlights of the 1978 season. That leaves one year. The film was released at the beginning of the 1979 season.

There is more than a way. He was very hated. The Cowboys were very hated. Probably more than today.

Staubach was hated by rivals because he broke their hearts so many times on the field but he wouldn't have made a hate list like this he was too well respected. Most of the players on the list are hated mainly because of character issues. Anyone should know why Vick, Suh, Roethlisberger and Te'o are on the list. It has to do with their character. Someone asked about Carson Palmer and Reggie Bush. My guess on Bush it would have to do with the improper benefits he supposedly received while attending USC which he denied. Some heavy sanctions were passed down on the school because of it and I'm sure that's led to some ill feelings towards him. Bush decided to forfeit his Heisman so his character was in question. As for Carson Palmer the hate for him could stem from him quitting on Cinn and forcing them to trade him. I doubt what he did set well with a lot of people. I'm sure some thought who the hell does he think he is? He's never been a great QB and only won one playoff game. The Bengals have been better off with Dalton. Palmer did nothing for the Raiders who gave up a #1 pick for him.

They ended up dumping him only 2 years later. He hasn't looked any better in AZ who acted like they were getting some great QB when they signed him. Did they not see how the Raiders looked with him? Mark Sanchez is on the list because he sucks as a QB and you can bet a lot of New Yorkers probably took part in the survey. Cutler is on the list because of the bad rap he received 2 years ago for sulking on the sidelines and distancing himself from his teammates when he got injured vs the Packers during the playoffs. His leadership was questioned and he was brutalized by the media. Cutler has a way about him that puts some people off. It's easy to figure out why most of these players are on that list and it has nothing to do with the teams they play for. Again that's my opinion.

It just seems to me that people really do not understand hate or rather have never had a good reason to 'hate' somebody. Petty is the word for it.

Seems that people disagree with you.

Instead of listing posters on this board who disagree with me go find some experts who disagree with me. The only thing anyone hated about Staubach was how good he was and how clutch he was.

Is it so hard to understand that popularity and dislike often come hand in hand? The Yankees and Lakers are two of the most popular sports teams in the nation, and also some of the most disliked.

Which means they'll be on the most hated lists and the most popular lists so go find a list that has Romo in the top "most popular" players in the NFL.

This is just a dumb list. I mean seriously, can writers think of something better to do? Surely, there are better topics than to write about people you dislike.

Frankly though, I think Romo is a nice guy. He just plays for a team that people love to hate.

There's a problem with your discussion because according to Wikipedia Ryan coined "America's Team" while preparing and editing the teams 78 season highlight film. During the Cowboys' first game of the 1979 season a nationally televised game against the St Louis Cardinals (Dallas won 22-21) the television announcer for CBS introduced the Cowboys as America’s Team and the name stuck. So Staubach was still playing when the nickname was introduced.

That is the point that I brought up in an earlier post. Good job with the research.

At least they recognize Romo as "underrated, underappreciated and elite":

Here's the forbes list regarding why the players aren't liked. If you read the comments on each player, I see no actual reasoning for Romo, Brady or even Sanchez to be on this at all. Compare the "reasoning" to the others on the list:

Full article here: http://www.forbes.com/sites/tomvanriper/2013/10/21/the-nfls-most-disliked-players-2/

1. Michael Vick

Philadelphia Eagles
Pct. Dislike: 53%
Those who identify as big NFL fans like him, but much of the wider audience still knows him as the dog-fighting guy.

2. Manti Te'o

San Diego Chargers
Pct. Dislike: 48%
Not enough playing time as a rookie yet to erase memories of the bizarre fake girlfriend episode at Notre Dame last year.

3. Ndamukong Suh

Detroit Lions
Pct. Dislike: 43%
Fans love tough players, but not dirty players. It's a line Suh often flirts with.

4. Ben Roethlisberger

Pittsburgh Steelers
Pct: Dislike: 40%
Past investigations into sexual assault accusations never yielded any charges, but still hover over his image.

5. Mark Sanchez

New York Jets
Pct. Dislike: 40%
Has never seemed unlikeable, just began taking heat for his own and the Jets regression last year. With rookie QB Geno Smith now showing promise, Sanchez, out with an injured shoulder, is even easier to dump on.

6. Jay Cutler

Chicago Bears
Pct. Dislike: 33%
A perpetual sourpuss. Is Cutler ever happy?

7. Tony Romo

Dallas Cowboys
Pct. Dislike: 32%
Underrated and underappreciated. That's life as quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys when you don't get to the Super Bowl, regardless of your eilte play.

8. Tom Brady

New England Patriots
Pct. Dislike: 25%
Pretty boy, model wife, perfect life. Women love him, but guys can't picture him coming over to watch the game over a few beers, like they can with Peyton Manning or Aaron Rodgers.

9. Carson Palmer

Arizona Cardinals
Pct. Dislike: 24%
Forner Heisman winner from USC has seen his career sink after early promise. His departure from Cincinnati in 2011 - disgruntled player forcing a trade - didn't help Palmer's image.

10. Reggie Bush

Detroit Lions
Pct. Dislike: 22%
Bush's uneven pro career (three teams in eight seasons) hasn’t been enough to undo his lasting image as the USC guy who had to return his Heisman Trophy amid scandal.

Replace Romo on that list with "Cowboys Quarterback" and it would still show up on the most hated list.
If Jesus Christ himself played QB for the Cowboys he would be hated.

People in this country sure loves their dogs, but I don't blame Vick's unpopular rating to the dog fighting. I think he has always came off as a thug and he was disliked before being jailed.
