Game of Thrones Season 5 ***spoilers***

With him taking 4-5 years between books and his age, there's really no telling if he will finish the last book. Honestly 5 years after the show ends, the last book may not have near the interest as previous installments. If he really wants to keep people intrigued by the last book, he will buckle down and get it done within a year, 2 at the most of the shows end.

When is the show supposed to end? Have they announced which season will be the last season of the show?

It seems it would be hard for him to decide when, or how quickly, he needs to buckle down if he doesn't even know when the show is going to end. I mean if the show hasn't announced when they will end their show and they do 4 or 5 or 6 more seasons then why would he have to worry about being in a hurry?

I ask this because I don't follow any of it enough to know if they've ever announced which season would be the last.

For example as a Sons of Anarchy fan I knew season seven was going to be the final season a couple of years prior to it. He said in tons of interviews that he had a plan of 6 or 7 seasons all along so once season 5 wrapped we all knew that either the next season or the one more would be all there was.

Most good writers have an ending to their story first and foremost.
Martin has an ending, he quizzed the show runners on the ending before giving his blessing for the show.
He still supervises all scripts, and still gives approvals before release.....And is contracted to continue to do so.

The show is not random .. This is not "modern family", "family matters", or "family ties".... They know where they are going... It's not based on ratings, or what looks cool... its based on an end game...

Bold is not accurate. He may or may not give approval, but his approval isn't required and he has said this many times. HBO can do whatever they want with the show, and he has no say in it.

He has told the writers his end game, and more or less how it's going to get there, They ask him for advice from time to time, but it is entirely their beast at this point. He has absolutely no say in what they do with it. He doesn't even write for the show currently, as he did with previous seasons.

Both the Books and TV show are traveling from New York to California. But each medium is stopping at different hotels and restaurants along the way.

They have 7 seasons planned. So 2 more.

Now that Jon Snow is out of the way.. (even if/most likely, temporary)... The white walkers are free to cause havoc.... there is going to be a lot of but kicking soon...the Bolton's are in for a very rude awakening...

HBO is planning for 7, at least that's been their narrative.

Hey, if you can make The Hobbit into three movies if you don't mind desecrating sacred characters and just generally ripping a hole in the chest of the novel and taking a wet dump in the hole and covering it up with some green-screen magic and simply pretending that nothing happened, you can buy poor George Martin another year of working on book 7 to get the end of the books closer to the end of the HBO series, right?

Not that it will matter, since he's going to need 4 years after that to actually get the damn thing done. :)

What I've read says the show creators would like to do 7, but HBO themselves would like it to go on for 10 (of course because it's their big money show). Also some people don't think they can realistically reach a satisfying conclusion by 7 at this pace.

So there's still speculation that they might settle on some middle ground like 8 or somewhere in between or have a follow up movie etc.. There's also some complications about how many seasons the actors are under contract for and that might goof things up.

See, that's the sort of capitalism we've grown to love.

Really, though, there's enough material in the books to stretch easily if that's the direction they wanted to go. They ought to have started stretching from the start, though, because now they've caught up too fast. Had the show been a bomb, they could have always just ended at the Red Wedding and had a laugh about it.

10 would be ridiculous imo opinion...
no one could stay under contract. You would have to completely change the story or replace characters just to make it to the end...

They would have caught up too fast no matter what. GRRM takes 10 years to release each book.

Yeah 10 is too much, but maybe it's like Dez asking for 17mil or Hardy's 10 game suspension where they ask for too much on purpose and settle in the middle. I'd be happy with 8. The funny thing is these kind of shows seem to lose steam around season 5 or so and go downhill or end it, GOT doesn't seem to be doing that except for maybe the Dorne parts.

And I absolutely hate it when they change actors, it still bugs me that they had 3 different Mountains and the last one was too young to have been around during past events he was involved in.

I hope they stick to 7... I see the light at the end of the tunnel...

There was some thing where he said he was working on up to three possible projects with HBO.

After GOT is over I think it would be interesting if they went back and did another version of it when Valeryia was the major hub of the world and have the show go until the Targaryeans leave Valeryia which include the story of what brought Valeryia down aka the doom.

Seven seasons will be all according to HBO. That is a lot of story lines to wrap up in 20 episodes . That is why I am pulling for the White Walkers. They could end all these storylines in a couple of seasons by just killing those involved. Go ***** Walkers.

I think a show about White Walker society and lifestyle would be fun to watch.

Yes that whole backstory would be interesting as well.

There's way to much potential for a prequel not to get one eventually. It probably won't be until after the final book is released, but exploring the Targaryen's, be it 20 years before or 100 years before has a lot of potential to be a great show.
