Garrett: More Cole Beasley outside

But if you were a corner you would play to the inside to try and mitigate the inside routes, get hands on him and force him to the sideline knowing he can't beat you deep. I think from a defender's point of view it would be easier to lock him down on the outside where in the slot he has to be doubled.

I think it would be based on timing. Cole drives to the inside and then cuts it to the outside or up the field he could get open. Again I am not saying he could play primarily outside but they could have a handful of plays for him. 4 or 5 WR sets with our #1 (lol will we have a #1?) in the slot could mean the nickel DB or S is covering Cole.

There was a vid from the other day that Cole made a DB look ridiculous outside the numbers. He drove the DB back then did a stutter and cut back to the ball for a nice catch and gain.

Having receivers play the same position - Too predicable, Cowboys coaches are idiots
Having receivers mix it up - Too cute, sign of desperation, Cowboys coaches are idiots
:laugh::hammer:

I've been saying that since his rookie season.
Because that's common sense. Maximize what you have in a 4th overall pick. One of the reasons he was rated so high was because of his route running, and he's done some damage in the passing game (couple long tds), but we barely ever see him targeted in passing game outside of last resort screens

Interesting ........just me but always thought the further he play from LOS his impact becomes less effective

Cole Beasley - WR - Cowboys
Speaking Tuesday, Cowboys coach Jason Garrett emphasized that Cole Beasley will play more snaps on the outside this season.

Garrett also claimed it will be a natural transition for the 29-year-old, 5-foot-8 slot man. "I think he’s always been able to handle it," Garrett said. "You’ve seen him have a lot of success at different times as an outside receiver." The fact that this is becoming one of the early tropes of Cowboys camp speaks to just how thin the Cowboys' receiver group is. If this is the solution to that problem, the Cowboys' passing attack is in even more trouble than we thought.

They need to be able to mix things up.

They've been very limited in the past with Dez as the #1. TWill also has limitations.

Now that guys like Hurns can play any spot, they can move other players like Beasley around.

They will not play Beasley outside a high percentage of the time, but it's good to use him there occasionally. The smoke screen where the WR catches the ball at the line would be good for Beasley outside. He'll need to multiple routed there to avoid predictibility.

It can also be used for match-up purposes. Some big outside CBs struggle with guys like Tavon Austin. Richard Sherman often altered his style against the jitterbug type WRs.

I think Garrett is so clueless that he actually believed this when he said it. Lets put Tavon and Beasley on the outside and have hurns play the slot that will fool the defense LOL.

You do know that Hurns has played the majority of his NFL snaps in the slot, right?

Putting slot guys out wide is a questionable tactic, but it’s not unheard of. Smaller receivers can have success outside—Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Wes Welker, Steve Smith, etc.

Smith is the only one remotely close in size. Honestly, it is no comparison between those two. Smith was physical and tough as nails. The other guys get lumped in because they are also white and sub 6 feet.

Steve Smith came to mind as a small (height) receiver who had success everywhere. Of course he is built like a bowling ball. I think Beasley would occasionally be good on the outside. Note I said occasionally.

Did you spend last night at a Holiday Inn Express?

Welker and Smith are both 5’9”. Beasley is 5’8”. Amendola and Edelman are taller but still pretty slightly built.

It’s fair to say the strategy *probably* wouldn’t be successful on an every down basis, but it’s demonstrably false to say it would absolutely fail.

And here we go again copying the Pats. First it was love of the 12 personnel. Now the love of short quick dudes. I actually like it, but if he isn't going to go in motion, or he just trots out there and stand there like Dez we're doomed!
Beasley is no Edelman. Or even Amendola.

Weller and Smith are an inch taller.

Welker is 10lbs heavier.

Edelman nearly 20lbs.

Amendola 10 lbs bigger.

Smith is 5 lbs heavier and the toughest guy on the field. If you've seen him play, comparisons with Beasley become absurd.

Cole is the smallest of the bunch.

Offense isn’t going to be the problem.

If he can’t play outside, they’ll move him back inside. It isn’t rocket science.

If he’s outside on the wide side of the field he’s not bracketed by the side line. I’ve been skeptical of Cole out wide but I’m ready to be proven wrong, and it’s looked quite good so far in camp.
To be fair Beasley looks good every camp. He did last year than went on to catch only 36 passes

Welker is 5 pounds heavier (according to Wiki).

Amendola is 10 pounds bigger but three inches taller, hence my comment about being slightly built.

Point being, you can’t say slightly built, slot recievers absolutely can’t have any success on the outside. It remains to be seen with Cole, but there is some precedent for it.

It's not actually a bad idea to mix things up a bit. I think it will be interesting to see Tavon and Beasley on the outside and Gallup on the inside for a play or two to mix things up. I'm willing to give it a go.

Irvin88, One could argue that Cole had a *better* year last year. It’s very rare that a slot receiver demands NFL double coverage. That’s a win for the offense—just not a win we took advantage of. Dez couldn’t beat one-on-one.

And let’s be clear: Cole was our best receiver for sure in 2016.

Haha Beasley was terrible last year and it wasn't because he was doubled all the time which is a false statement. It's an excuse to make a fan favorite look like he is great when in reality Beasley is just a decent slot receiver. His routes weren't crisp, he dropped passes. Much more went into it than "he was doubled all the time"

I agree with you with sometimes it would be an interesting wrinkle in the offense. But Cole to my understanding has been starting outside.
