Garrett vs. Lewis what's the difference?

Defense, running the ball are two big ones for me. Garrett is a joke, be we have seen that we can at least compete for a championship if he stays out of the way if the other issues are working.

We're actually in the top 10 in the league in terms of rushing this year-- or at least we were before Carolina lol.

Defense is the biggest problem area for this team. Period.

If Romo is not considered an elite QB after an almost MVP season last season-- then he's right on the cusp. Call him a "great" QB if that makes you feel better :)

Not having adequate depth at QB ABSOLUTELY killed us this year. Brandon Weeden?! They gambled that Romo could stay upright behind "the greatest OL in the NFL" and they got burnt. With a solid backup (Orton's caliber)-- we would not have lost 7 straight games. The offense failed to score a single TD in 2 games! To say that we wouldn't have been better with additional depth at QB is off base IMO.

WR depth is less of an issue-- but still one that hurt us primarily b/c the front office over-estimated the talent on the roster. Beasley, Williams, and Street failed to beat one on one coverage and that only limited the offense that much more. Adding a quality vet WR in free agency would have helped-- a guy like James Jones was picked up by GB and has been helping them out all year long even with their #1 Jordy Nelson on the shelf.

I don't see major changes next year either. Unless this team just absolutely quits-- but I don't think that will happen. I think JJ will keep Garret, Linehan, and Marinelli-- but Bisaccia and some of the assistants like Jerome Henderson may get the boot.

IMO-- Romo should stay in the system he's comfortable with. Either he and JG win big-- or we clean house in 2-3 years when Romo retires.

If all seven losses were because of bad quarterback play I would agree with you, but they weren't. I realize they couldn't score in a Mexican bordello in some of those games but at other times the whole team stunk. No field position generated by special teams, bad defensive series, etc. Simply put, while Weeden did stink, I don't believe a slightly better backup makes this team significantly better.

WR have been another inconsistent group. They simply have failed to create any separation for long periods of time and when they do create separation the QB is on his back or never sees them. I think that Butler kid could have helped some but it seems the injury bug bit him as well.

Henderson is a possibility. I would also think the o-line coach as well.

I think 2016 will be an interesting year for Romo. If he stays healthy and has a season similar to 2014 things will go good for him. On the other hand if he cannot stay healthy or physically cannot compete his tenure in Dallas may be at an end. He's approaching that age where you just don't know what you are going to get. It seems Brady has found the proverbial fountain of youth. Can Romo do the same? That's another one of those million dollar questions.

Run the ball, play defense, have Romo only throw the ball 20-30 times a game all while developing a young stud at QB. When he is ready to take over, has both the D and the run game to help begin his career while we stay competitive.

He finally got a decent QB, while Garrett has had a decent QB and continuously sucked..

Really? Carson Palmer doesn't count? So Dalton is the decent one? HA ha ha

Lewis has had so many drafts at the top of the list his entire team is #1 picks. I guess the next argument will be all the great things Jeff Fisher has done coaching in the last 20 years. What is he like .340 lifetime?

Marvin Lewis had 1 winning season his first 6 years as a head coach. His last 7 he has 6 winning seasons, assuming he wins one game more this year.

So is Lewis a bad coach? I am curious as to why in the modern NFL sometimes coaches get maybe 2-3 seasons to prove themselves then get canned, and really why Lewis wasn't fired after 6 seasons.

Would you fire Lewis right now because he never has won a Superbowl?

2015 57 Cincinnati Bengals NFL 10 8 2 0 .800

Actually, Garrett's and Marvin's first 4 seasons are eerily familiar.

Lewis had Carson Palmer for a while. While Carson is no Roger or Troy he's certainly no Ryan Leaf or Quincy Carter either.

I wouldnt want Lewis even if he is better than Garrett because he isnt anywhere close to better enuff.

Then I question if you grasp how bad Garrett is. He is not a difference maker AT ALL. His philosophy as to how you win football games does not need an X and O guy. It requires a disciplinarian and a motivator. Problem he is neither a creative football man....NOR is he a disciplinarian/motivator.....which means we have NOTHING at head coach. It is ALL on the players. And when Romo went down....EVERYONE else found out what many of us know...we have NOTHING at head coach. He is NOT a NFL head coach.

This is the Dallas Cowboys, I thought that was supposed to mean something.

The sad thing is we've developed a culture since 1996 where losing is completely acceptable so long as we get those pointless moral victories at the end of the season to make fans think that we're better than we actually are.

I can't stand the 9ers but at least their fans have the guts to actually call out ownership, including flying signs over the stadium saying there needs to be a change, and meanwhile our fans just sit back and drink the koolaid.

Yah-- the defense certainly dropped the ball against Atlanta, NO, and Phi. BUT-- bad QB play killed us against NY, Sea, and TB. Marginally better QB play in those games, and we are sitting at 6-5 right now and first place in the NFCE-- even with a backup.

Believe me-- I'm 100% on board with fixing this defense, but it's just as clear to me that 2015 was sabotaged by our own front office's decision making this offseason.

To be fair.. Defense is the biggest problem area for most teams that aren't Denver and Seattle.

You gotta score points in this league and it helps run games and defenses.

I already explained that... They were 11-5 in their third year, one of the hottest, if not hottest teams in the league, and then Palmer got his knees taken out. And that happened, he wasn't the same. That's why he ended up with the Raiders, only to revive his career in Arizona. But he's never been the same.

Garrett in his third year, once again choked his way out of the play-offs and then got play-calling duties stripped from him, nothing Marvin Lewis ever saw and ended up 12-4 and then scrubbed again, once Romo was out and he had to coach himself again. Plus, they fired Rob Ryan and went to a 4-3, brought in Kiffen, fired him and then went with Marinelli... And then just let the guy that built their OL, go to the Commanders, because Garrett felt threatened...

Agreed. But not every defense is on pace to shatter the record for fewest forced turnovers. Our defense is going out of its way to be unproductive lol. It's strange how in the games our offense actually showed up for the backup QB-- the defense just sucked.

They gave up 39 points to a bad Atlanta team. Lost in OT to a bad Philly and NO team on ridiculous pass plays that should have never happened. Then-- when the defense is actually holding their own (in terms of yards and points allowed at least), the offense is a no show. Seattle and Tampa Bay come immediately to mind.

And don't forget our beloved special teams as well. Just when we tie the game in NY-- there they are to let Harris run the ball back and Beasley shows up just in time to fumble away any chance for a last second comeback.

I mean you can't script this season any worse-- lol

You don't think Jones craves the visibility and revenue that comes with being an NFL team owner any less than they do?

No I think he does. The difference is Jerry makes deals to make money and the Brown and Hunts don't because they can collect their 1/32nd share by doing no work at all.

Well, we've got that going for us. Which essentially means zero for us fans at the end of the day.

Unless of course you feel good yelling "We're NUMBER ONE...in team value" in someone's face.

Would better QB play result in a better record? Maybe. I still think we lose several of those games. Score 35 points and give up 38. The only thing we know for certain is that this team is 3-8.

Want a good start in fixing this defense? Don't trot out Nick Hayden as one of your lineman.

There is no doubt that a good bit of blame can be assigned to the front office, but part of that blame also needs to be directed at the coaching staff and players.

Maybe... but there's no way of knowing what Tony would be w/o JG. What we do know is that they gush over each other every chance they get, and that their respect and affection for one another appears by all account to be genuine.

Tony likes the system. Tony produces in this system. The offensive system isn't broken... Tony's collarbone is. And the front office decided to let Murray walk... remember how Tony was campaigning for Murray to stay? IMO-- that one misstep along with letting Callahan walk, really set this offense back from where it was last year.

I'm not necessarily sure Romo likes the system.

Romo wasn't even involved in the game-planning, until Jerry gave him the new contract and started removing Garrett away from the play-calling role. That was the year they tried with Callahan.

I'm beginning to think Romo finally started complaining. Garrett had control...

Seeing this thread again just makes me laugh.

After the trifecta of 8-8 seasons you'd see posts about how it was a good thing Dallas didn't give up on Jimmy so soon. Ya know, because with the teams each guy inherited being identical and everything else being equal, it's only a matter of time before Jason leads the team to a championship. Similar statements about Landry were made as well although I'm not sure why. I guess because coaching a team in the first year of it's existence isn't all that different than assuming a HC position with key pieces in place.

Here we are in the 5th year of Jason's stint and now we get the comparisons to Marvin Lewis. Have no idea why because there's not even an appeal to familiarity or sentiment. He's just a coach who's been with his team for a long time and now his team is contending. Little surprised we skipped Bill Cowher. May have taken him 15 years to win a championship, but at least he won a championship. Just give Jason another decade and you'll see. Nothing against Marvin Lewis, but without a championship under his belt aren't we lowering the bar quite a bit? We've now moved from HoF coaches to guys who were close but couldn't get their team to that next level of success?

I feel a bit cheated. Had things fallen in the proper order where we consistently move the timeframe back until Jason's inevitable rise to glory, we could have had some interesting topics. I'm quite certain at some point we would have seen a post about how someone played Madden in Franchise Mode and after only 25 simulated seasons under the same head coach his team finally won a Super Bowl.

Come on guys, just give Jason another 13 years to get this done. I stuck with my Madden head coach for over 2 decades and it finally paid off. Where would my franchise have been if we would have cut ties after year 21 of his leadership?
