"We are gonna move on from some guys" is something a head coach should be saying at the end of a 4-12 season not at the start of training camp.

And instead they promptly resigned almost all their own FAs

That's what I don't like people clowning on the right kind of guys with Jason. He didn't want these guys to begin with. It would be a different had he had control. We wouldn't have drafted Gregory for one thing. And that not a total endorsement of garret, I'm just saying he's catching flack for jerrys whims.

It's so dumb. For one thing, he's talking generally about how they want to build the team in terms of core players and premium FA dollars. Two, he clearly mentions on multiple occasions that they make allowances for troubled players they think have a shot to rehabilitate if they have other traits in terms of personality and physical ability that they're looking for. And on top of that, as you say, there's the Jerry factor that nobody else really has any control over.

The risks they take on players like Hardy and McClain they take because the deals are pay-as-you-go. Randy Gregory was a mistake, but he's a guy who (as Stephen said again today) has a sickness that they're working through. He's otherwise the kind of guy they're looking for

Overall, though, we've got a lot of smart dedicate players who do the right thing. If they build the bulk of the roster that way and supplement it with a couple of long shots they think might pan out who are pay-go guys, it's not the end of the world. The character of the team overall is very good, and that's what Garrett's talking about. He said exactly that again today.

Anybody who doesn't understand that at this point is just trying not to understand it.

It will be interesting to see if Gregory can get through his suspension before failing his third drug test.

That's asking a lot. Maybe he promised Jerry it'll never happen again and will feel compelled to behave. (I still believe in Santa, by the way.)

It is really too late now, it would seem like they are responding to media/fan pressure, not that they are being tough.

The cowboys are like one of those tabloids, you never know what crazy story you will see each week.

Yes .......so much that you would even compare his little pot "problem" to terminal cancer. Talk about ignorance and hate.

The comparison highlighted the biological basis for both mental health issues and cancer. Sorry if that went over your head.

Steven alluded to Gregory's medical condition again in the presser today. There are HIPPA reasons why they're not more explicit about what's going on, but it's exceedingly obvious that this is a medical issue and not strictly and addiction or a recreational drug use issue they're working through.

I feel for the guy. Not that it matters in terms of his status or future. If anything, it makes things dicier.

Yep, exactly right Abe. Just heard on talkin' Cowboys with every day he misses in camp they start getting money back from him. The team also makes money on his game bonuses which amount to a million dollars as long as he's on the suspended list so they can either keep him in hell or his agent can cut a deal. Right now I think the team wants to stick it to him for awhile.

That's why Stephen called his situation "nuanced."

Him not showing up for camp really works in our favor. He doesn't even eat up a roster spot at this point. I have to think they are negotiating a buyout. We do have a certain amount of money he gets if we cut him after 10 games - around 250k but he's got to give back 500k. Be interesting to know if the money back on the cap requires him repaying the money. Or if the cap rebate and payback are separate issues. I can see a player claiming they don't have the cash

To add to this as I know people will bring it up, medical issues not related to injury are the only HIPPA issues the league needs to comply with. So if you are going to post about how we know that someone has a torn ACL which is a medical issue, don't.

The CBA superceded HIPPA on injury reporting as that relates to competitive advantage. The only way we would know 100% what Gregory's issue is would be if he released that information or have permission for that release.

Given how stigmatizing mental health issues are - as evidenced by many of the comments in this and other threads - most should easily see why that not public.

Also, I think the team might realize they didn't provide the right kind of support. They likely got him help for addiction but misidentified the cause as "likes to party."

I hear Jerry talk about the great support systems in place but those don't seem to be working

And it's pretty clear the Cowboys are specifically not talking in any detail about what the issues might be. But it's obvious it's something and that it's pretty significant. And it's also probably the reason he fell as far as he did on draft day and it wasn't a case of him simply failing a drug test.

Or (I'll use one of my favorite Idgitisms) wilful ignorance.

There are Idgitisms? Because that's amazing. It's too bad you don't get to hear the colorful things I say in my head that I can't put down or I'd have to ban myself.

I've read articles saying bipolar and ones saying social anxiety disorder. Many people with both abuse drugs, often to self medicate. If it is one of the two, I would hope for social anxiety - that's a bit easier to treat. Many folks with bipolar don't respond to treatment. If it is bipolar, it is unlikely that being in a high pressure NFL environment is going to be good for him.

Yep. Having a raging mob hate you for not panning out is probably not all that good for a depressed person.

The team seems genuinely concerned for his health. Whatever his demons, I hope he works them out. As a player, though, I've written him off. As much as I think players missing games for smoking pot is stupid, it is what it is and this doesn't sound like anything he's going to be on top of anytime soon.
