Gibbs steps down *Merge*

No charge.

So, a friend here at work who is a Skins fan brought up a possible candidate to replace him that I think has some merit.

Russ Grimm.

I could see Grimm taking the Ravens job if offered. Not the Commanders though.
He has a pretty good gig as AHC, and OL coach in Arizona still working with Whisenhunt and all. Who knows ?

I was tired of seeing his little bulldog face on the sidelines. Go away Gibbs!

Damn! This is bad news. What a way to start the day! :bang2:

I was hoping that the Midget would extend, or that Gibbs would extend, his contract another 10 years!!

Oh well, at least I don't have to watch him on the sideline spitting every 5 seconds!

Curious, why wouldn't he take the Skins job if offered?

I said a few years back that Snyder would screw Williams when this went down and I still think he will. My suggestion for a new coach would be...Richie Petitbon. They love repeating history there.

Grimm would take it in a heartbeat.

He's not getting it though. I think Snyder is done singing "Glory Days"

Whatever he does is going to be interesting. Obviously he's calling Cowher but I don't think he gets him.

My guess here is that he goes after Pete Carroll.

I'll take famous Rich's for 1,000 Alex.

How about Rick Kotite?

I don't think he's screwing Williams -- I think that the media probably overplayed the succession plan card.

Allegedly there is a clause in his contract that stipulates a bonus if he is not named the next head coach. If that is true, then I don't think it is overplayed.

Can they promote from within without satisfying the Rooney Rule first, I wonder...

Oh, I think he would. I worded that poorly after re-reading it. I just don't think he will even get an offer from the Commanders.

No, they cannot. There are no exemptions from the Rooney Rule.

Bach, actually the Commanders do have pretty good depth, as much as most teams in the NFL, so that statement is uninformed. However they do rotate certain players in and out however considering that Brunell has been on the roster for 4 years, Portis 4 years, Springs 4 years, etc. I would say the 2-3 year rotation is only really at certain positions OL depth, WR depth, DB depth, etc.

That depth really showed this year. They were 5-7 until they rallied together after Taylor's funeral combined with playing several teams with horrible QB's or in the case of Dallas, a team going through the motions trying to get that final game over with.

As for the FA's, you know as well as I do they have a revolving door there. How many years did the great Adam Archuleta stay around? I don't think it was 4 years. Not even three. How about Deion? Jeremiah Trotter? Or Brandon 1.5 Lloyd? I could keep going if you want because the last 8 years is littered with "name" FA's that Danny brought in who lasted only 2-3 years.

That's too bad because I think he could keep a lot of the Offensive staff from exiting stage left. Like Bugel.

There is no bonus in his contract, most of us have known that for a while now.

And yes, they can promote from within without satisfying the Rooney Rule.

I'm actually looking forward to Norv 2.0

That's a good point, but I don't think Buges would coach with anyone except Gibbs. Don Breaux may go as well.

 Then why have the rule in the first place?

http://www.aaregistry.com/african_american_history/2269/NFL_levies_fine_over_Rooney_Rule

...The NFL had been trying for years to increase minority presence at its highest levels and intensified its attack on the problem after advocates announced last year they might sue if the NFL didn't hire more black coaches. League owners agreed in principle in December that any team seeking to hire a head coach would interview at least one minority candidate. The exception would be when a team makes a commitment to promote one of its assistants.

I'm not a true believer in Norv, but what would the Skins fans say if Norv makes it to the Super Bowl? :D

A bonus is not the same as a "you will get the job" promise

They cannot -- I expect that is also why you can't guarantee a deal for a future job.

Regardless of the Rooney Rule or not -- they have a situation in Washington that seems a good fit for Mike Singletary -- he's a motivational guy who isn't a strong X and Os person -- if they can keep Williams and Saunders, it is a good situation for him.
