Like another poster said, if Romo goes down for more than one or two games max, season is over
The only backup QBs that I've seen that could possibly, maybe, slim-chance-in-heck salvage a season for a team are Osweiler in Denver and Sanchez in Philly... every other team would likely be screwed.
As others have pointed out, Showers will probably not clear waivers. Too many people have said that he has that "something." In fact, I think Washington would be one of the teams to go after him, but I can see 3-5 teams really going after him: CAR, HOU, SEA, maybe IND or CHI.
Dallas kept Romo because they saw "something" in him. He's not protypical QB size. Before the 2006 season, before he'd even started a game, Sean Payton wanted Romo, but wasn't willing to give up a 2nd rounder for him (good on Jerry)
Not saying he's the next Romo, but of the 3 backup QBs, Showers has shown the most confidence and composure while out on the field. Even with defenders hanging on his legs, he kept eyes up looking for his receiver. He was getting blitzed often against SF and he still moved the ball.
Showers is NOT a running QB. Showers is a QB that can run and run well and run smart, but he's not a running QB. He's mobile but not a runner (like Romo)
To know Showers, look at how he has approached playing on special teams. He's plays it smart. He's not just out there flailing his arms, he's serious about it. He's a real blue-collar kind of guy.
I dunno about Dallas keeping 3 QBs b/c of depth needs elsewhere, but I think he's worth keeping. Let him be the holder....let him do what Romo did.
