Heard a tidbit about Holland on GaC today

Update on Holland per David Moore this morning on the Ticket...Holland will be out another week and will not be playing the Minny game.

This guy is milking the clock!

Sure sounds like it.

And what does it say when after performing for one week in camp he's forced to miss the next 4?

With a back injury to boot!

Anyone optimistic that he'll put all this 'behind' him and go on to start 16 (and hopefully more) games?

It shouldn't be a surprise Holland will start. He's the only choice with any NFL experience, and while his time in Dallas has been disappointing, and while he is not the ideal option, the rookies need some time to learn and strengthen their bodies.

My 'surprise' comes from the fact that the team isn't wise to his M.O. by now and isn't actively pursuing other, more reliable options.

I agree about giving the young players any time they need to develop.

But I can't reconcile putting any faith in Holland to contribute.

The LG situation is my biggest worry with the offensive personnnel. I think Smith will have his rookie struggles, but he's such a tremendous athlete he will be able to cover some of his mistakes.

I agree again. I think Smith needs to continue to work on his footwork (which at this point needs some work) but his athteicism is so good he can make up for some of it.

But this Holland thing has created a real mess. Not only is he out, but you're forced to flip Kosier over to hold the rookie's hand rather than risk having two rookies on the same side of the line.

Kosier has handled the move well, but I'd like a reliable alternative at LG to give the young players time to develop.

Holland isn't it.

The best solution is the one that Babe has been suggesting for weeks, Make Costa the Center and move Gurode over to guard. That would settle this mess. Cut Holland for good, and you have Nagy and Arkin getting stronger day by day.

Our Oline pulling and moving athletically is the ticket for success this year. Yes they might be young but they move well. Collinsworth said it himself the other night.

I'm more concerned with possibly adding a veteran cornerback because of the issues with Newman and Jenkins.

In all seriousness, i think the cornerback issues are much, much greater than the Holland issue. Whether someone agrees if he should start or not, at least there is a feeling that he is a decent player, and if it turns out he isn't, then start one of the young guys that everyone is so enamored with. The only downside I see is this made up perception that its going to destroy the locker room or ruin the motivation of the young guys. The players care more about winning than anything. You would have more of a problem in the locker with starting an inferior player just to make a point, rather than starting the guy who gives you the best chance to win.

The secondary flat out sucks.

I would put cornerback a close second. Even if Newman misses time, Jenkins and Scandrick have both played. Other than Holland, Nagy and Arkin haven't, to say nothing of the abbreviated offseason they've had.

My problem is rolling the dice with someone so completely unreliable. After one week of rtaining camp, he's out for a month? He can be a great player, but if he can't play, all of that 'greatness' is for naught.

The only downside I see is this made up perception that its going to destroy the locker room or ruin the motivation of the young guys. The players care more about winning than anything. You would have more of a problem in the locker with starting an inferior player just to make a point, rather than starting the guy who gives you the best chance to win.

The obvious downside is counting on a guy you can't count on. The other is handing a starting job to a guy who clearly has not eanred it. That's what's led to the line performances of the past from fat cats like Colombo, Davis, and Gurode. Guys secure in their roles because there was no way they could lose them. And that gave us the poor results we got.

It's struggling, but I'm cutting that spot a bit of slack considering that both starting corners are out.

Hopefully Jenkins is back soon and things start to improve. But I wouldn't be against adding a veteran option there either.

No, he did great.

And was always kind enough to pick Romo up after he got him killed.

Including him was more of an indictment of how Colombo got his job handed back to him as soon as he came back, despite the fact that Free was clearly playing better, more than a criticism of Colombo himself. Colombo tried as best as he could.

I really don't think it's Jerry's call. Holland isn't making enough to be forced into the lineup, and I'd be surprised if Garrett would let that happen. Doesn't seem like his MO.

No intention to start another Jerry derail...I'm more concerned about the organizations overall philosophy, which McMahon is basically alluding to.

I just believe (perhaps incorrectly) that the best player should start so there is a steady competition, players know that if they're better, they will advance and inversely players know if they fall back, they'll lose their job regardless** of what they are being paid.

** Exception would be where a younger, less experienced player who is some percentage less talented but worth moving into the spot for the sake of the future (as well as the side effect of confirming the message to all that no one has tenure in this organization). The opposite doesn't work in my opinion (I.E. Keeping older, less talented, lesser performing with a maxed out ceiling and nothing but downside just because of their contract).

I'm pretty sure I've heard Garrett say on multiple occasions that the best player will play, so I'm going to trust him over McMahon and hope he doesn't let us down

Play the best players. Period. You can't go wrong that way.

I am as excited about youth on the line as anyone else. More than that, I am very excited about the athleticism. I think the speed and agility of those young guys could be very handy, and those are skills that Holland simply doesn't have...

But I do believe Holland is a good football player, and I hope the coaches will simply play the best player and go from there.
