Of course it meant something. It's about the biggest rivalry today in the NBA. Why would you fault a team for playing their starters? "Oh Avery said he wouldn't!! :cry2:
Can a coach not change his mind? Going into the game, he probably didn't see it, but after 3 quarters when it was still close, he changed his mind. What's wrong with that? If the Spurs had gotten out to a bigger lead in the first half or 3 quarters, I'm sure Dirk and Josh and Jet would have sat. But Avery saw an opportunity to pick up a win in a rivalry at home, going into the playoffs. What's wrong with that? Sounds like good coaching to me.
Of course there are still doubts. There are doubts with every team in the league. If you don't have doubts/concerns, you get overconfident and get beat. The Mavs know that first hand, it happened last year in the Finals. I guarantee you Pop has doubts too.
I've not said once that SA had no shot of beating the Spurs. I don't think anyone else has either. I just think you sensitive Spurs fans want to read that into our comments. You think we're getting overconfident again. Not happening. Trust me.
No one is crying about it. I actually think it's rather comical.
But say if the shoe was on the other foot and SA had the best record and Popovich played his starters big minutes, including a part when Dirk got ejected, you know good and well you'd be singing the same tune, and probably be :cry2: even more, since it's a known fact the Mavs fans have a history of whining even more than Spurs fans do. See NBA Finals last season, and the 2003 WCFs when Joey Crawford saddled Dirk with 3 early fouls and a technical to go along with tossing Don Nelson and Del Harris out of the game.
Yes I noticed Avery got caught up in the rivalry and it's fine to keep playing your regulars even after he said he wasn't but if that's the case, don't continue to call it a meaningless game. You may not have called it one, but your fellow brethren still are. And if SA won you'd immediately say it was meaningless cause "Mavs have clinched HCA, they didn't care if they won or lost." It's all about whatever makes you feel good.
Best of luck on the road to the NBA Finals. Spurs and Mavs should have some challenging first round opponents. Spurs will draw Denver, and Mavs might end up drawing a pesky Golden State team with former Mavs coach Don Nelson using "Nellie Ball" as his ticket into the playoffs by going small. Spurs and Mavs should move onto the 2nd round but I don't think it will be easy for either team. May take at least 6 games to put their teams away and move on.
