Holley vs Johnson vs Hurd

Unless the #5 guy is a Pro Bowl Calibre coverage or return guy it is fundamentally a developmental position. It should go to the guy who can play ST well and is the best developmental prospect at WR. This is probably best judged by the WR coach according to how good the player is now, how much improvement he is showing over time and what kind of work ethic he has.

As Sam H has had 4 seasons here and not developed into a quality WR or upper echelon ST player he is now and forever a JAG. He has probably become as good as he is ever going to be and he is not better than any of the top 4 we have.

You could make the case of keeping him as a #3 or #4 if he could beat out Ogletree and/or Crayton but not as a #5 again.

I like Hurd but if given the chance to select a WR who can contribute right away in the return game, you might just nudge Hurd to #6. Not that it really matters, #5 or #6 is pretty much the same thing.

Holley and Johnson can do whatever.

We need a number two WR or a WR with serious quicks to play the slot. I haven't given up on RW but I'm not sure about him. I'm not counting on a PS player to fill our need either. My guess is we won't draft a WR day one. I don't follow the draft well enough to call a WR in the second or third. I just see the need and know Holley isn't the answer.

Jacoby Ford isn't a polished WR. He ran go's, slants, basic outs and lots of bubble screens at Clemson. He also hasn't had strong QBing. I don't know how good McCluster is as a WR but he has the most quicks I've seen in a player in a long time.

Just mentioned those two since they are in the thread and have been mentioned in multiple threads lately.

I think we need a legitimate #2/3 WR either via FA or preferrably via a high draft pick. I realize even a high draft pick likely won't contribute a great deal year one but we need to quickly develop some higher quality WRs on this team. The offense needs help.

And Hurd isn't an answer for the offense. STs has a problem replacing him. He's irrelevant to the offense IMO.

Holley and Johnson have to prove they can play on several STs and be judged to have better futures than Hurd's present.

I can't say I've been overly impressed by any of these guys so far. Hopefully we get a developmental guy in the mid-rounds who we can groom for a couple of years.

If I'm not mistaken, Hurd was in the running for the pro bowl slot? In the few opportunities he has gotten he has done well. He hasn't beat out Austin or Crayton, but he is what you need in a 5th wide receiver.......a pretty good special teamer and can play WR in a pinch. If you expect your 5th WR to catch 30-40 passers a year, then he is probably your 3 or 4th WR.

Holley is a joke who no one would have ever heard of if not for the show with Irvin and Manny is just another guy, who may be a career practice squad player. We'll probably bring in some UFA who many on here will fall in love with and want to cut Crayton and Hurd this offseason.

I agree. Holley shouldn't have even won the spot.

Who deserves the 5th WR spot next season?
Hurd.

He is the best special teams guy of the three choices.

That is what #5 WR's do.

Holley may be one of the most aware players on this team. May not be the most talented, be he defenitly deserves a shot.

If I recall correctly, Holley showed VERY little in camp last year. Maybe he's improved. Manny Johnson showed flashes but wasn't consistent.

Hurd, on the other hand, arguably outperformed Austin in camp AND has been a mainstay on ST. Based on current evidence, Hurd would be the choice, and it wouldn't even be close.

But what happens in the 2010 training camp is yet to be seen. There are always some surprises.

finally someone that's got a clue
+1

Aware of what?

He's a camp body at best. If he was anymore, he would have been promoted with the big boys.

Whats next........Cleotis Brown, Alan Ball or Terrence Newman, who should be the starter opposite Jenkins? Or maybe Ocatavien, Butler or Ware as the LB opposite Spencer.

Its going to be a long off season!

Co-sign it's not even a debate right now, Hurd takes the spot easily. My only thing is that they need to KEEP Hurd as a 5th WR. He should not be seeing the field on offense and especially getting passes thrown his way. Too many key drops I can recall. There's nothing wrong with being a special teams ace. You RARELY saw the Bills bring in Steve Tasker to help them with the passing game. Ogletree > Hurd on offense.

Jesse Holley sucks, I still think this guy is just a huge publicity stunt. Lol so scooping up a punt in a meaningless preseason game means he has some of the best awareness on the team?

He is also the best WR of the three. I never understand why people want to run Hurd out of here so fast. He is doing exactly what is asked of him as the 5th WR. I keep hearing that he is supposed to do something to show he can start. What team does that?

The only reason why I don't want Hurd on the team is that it should be Miles/Roy/Shipley or Ford/Crayton/Ogletree.

Holly and Johnson both have a *long* way to go before either could consider supplanting Hurd on the roster. If Hurd's here next year, the spot is his to lose.

Because of one play in a preseason game that he started by muffing a punt?

He shouldn't have even been on the team. Hawkins out played him.

Dear lord, not another over rated former longhorn on this team!

 Wow they got Aggie fans in New York City? How exactly is Shipley overated? Shipley has good speed and quickness, great hands, and great punt return ability. Not a big guy, but Shipley has the ability to be a really good slot receiver in the NFL. You don't have to be a Longhorn fan to be able to see a talented wr prospect.

Hurd, he is an integral part of our ST play and unless we can find a developmental WR who can fill his roll on coverage teams I want Hurd on the squad.
