How do we motivate Roy Williams? Demote him like Crayton?

Roy Williams with rough night

Dec 2812:19AM CT
By Calvin Watkins

LANDOVER, Md. -- It was a long night for Cowboys wide receiver Roy E. Williams.

Yes, he did catch a touchdown pass, for four yards, but it was his only catch of the night.

He also had two drops, one he tapped the ball up in the air leading to an interception.

"I wasn't happy, I'll take it, but I wasn't happy," Williams said. "I was happy for my touchdown to help the team put seven points on the board but the interceptoin that got tipped up, I got my hands up late. The other one I was running with no ball."

On the season, Williams has 38 catches for 596 yards with seven touchdowns.

"I only get three or four opportunities a game, so I have to make those three or four opportunties count," Williams said.

I found Roy's comments during the post game interview about only getting 3 or 4 opportunities a game annoying. I thought there was an undercurrent of whining there. If he can get past that and realize that if he wants more opportunities then he can't drop easy passes, then maybe the lack of opportunities and Romo looking elsewhere can motivate him. Romo didn't look his way last night after that last dropped pass. I commend Romo for continuing to give Roy the opporunities that he does. But you could see the disgust in Romo's face after that last one was dropped.

Roy Williams, you play with possibly the best Tight End in the NFL

Roy Williams, you play with the NFC's top Receiver in yards

Roy Williams, you have developed a bad habit of dropping passes

THAT is precisely what fuels that hatred of Williams.

Oh my gosh.

The guys is saying he let the team down. He gets only a few opportunities and he needs to pick up his game.

Suddenly he is whining and doesn't get that this team has other play-makers.

Tough crowd.

Sorry, I disagree.

What drives the hatred is the irrational and emotional aspects of fans who see this as black and white.

Make catch...good player.

Drop ball...scumbag that shouldn't have the opportunity to breath.

Anyone think this kid isn't bothered by his play ignores that these are not robots but people just like us.

And not one of us goes across the middle with arms up and a safety targeting our ribs.

Fact is, I would venture to say that of all the people who post on boards like this one, there aren't maybe 2% that could kick a twenty yard field goal without any type of rush coming in their face.

Much less catch a real pass in a real game with real hitters ready to change your chromosome count with a helmet and a shoulder pad.

But you do amuse me, boys.

Well, despite that blunder by Roy, I still think Crayton is just right at #3WR/PR.

As for Ogletree, heck, look how long it took Miles Austin to get a chance to break in and at that, it was still b/c of an injury. This team has never seemed all that eager to push rookies into starting jobs.

It's really up to wade, but mostly up to Garrett, he's the OC.

Sam Hurd ain't the answer buddy... I'd rather see Olgetree get more time on the field.

Not during the playoffs.

We may be stuck with Roy Williams as the starter. The one thing Roy brings that Hurd doesn't is height and down-field blocking. Hurd is just a JAG.

Olgetree is too green. And you're definitely not inserting a rookie in during the playoffs. You need to run MORE of your playbook in the off-season not LESS.

What's going to happen is Roy is going to get his few passes to keep him in the game, and Miles will be the go-to receiver. Besides, we need to work the running game more anyway. We'll be fine if we just don't get stupid with the play calling.

Do you really think Austin would have been this good if we started him in his rookie season?

Give Olgetree some time. He'll be better in the future than he will be right now.

True, but I don't think those who criticize Roy Williams is "black or white".

Some fans just see Roy Williams making a bunch of excuses and quite simply not worth the money and picks we gave him.

"I didn't catch the ball because the light was in my eyes"

"I think I have the best hands in the NFL"

"I didn't have Tony Romo's cellphone last Season"

Michael Irvin tries to give the guy advice during TC and he brushes him off

"Now I got to go out and get 251 yards, after Austin got 250"

"I only get 3 to 4 opportunities a game"

It just gets old.

There is a guy who married my ex-wife.

I'm sure he sees her as a wonderful woman.

I can't help it if he has yet to find out she is doing the work of Satan.

It's undeniable: Roy Williams has dropped a number of highly catchable passes, and his production does not currently warrant his price tag. I get this, and understand your frustration.

However, his seven touchdowns rank second on the team. For all his faults, he's been a reliable receiver in the red zone. A team isn't going to bench that type of scoring production.
How much scoring has he taken away by stalling drives on catchable balls. We tolerated dropped balls from TO (and even Austin) because their playmaking more than makes up for it. But Williams isn't making more good plays than drops.

Hey Roy, you might get more then 3 or 4 opportunities a game if you ran good routes and held onto the ball.

RW, MB3 and Bennett should of all had their reps decreased as the season went along. Give some of the players behind these guys a chance to step up, something none of them have been able to do this season.

Spare me your uninformed patronizing BS.

You don't have the slightest ****ing idea what anyone on this forum is capable of...and that has absolutely NOTHING to do with Roy Williams.

Sorry you can't see the obvious excuses being made here....it's plain as the egg on his face.

He gets paid a **** ton of money to do what he's NOT doing. Your excuses for him are cute, and I'm sure they help him sleep at night, but they don't change the fact that he's not doing his job.

Here's the problem with demoting Roy Williams. Who plays in his place?

Now the hue and cry will say Ogletree. But this kid has six catches and is not ready.

How do I know. The coaches who watch the kid in practice all week think so or they would give him more time in the game.

Now finding out what Ogletree can do well, and working him in for four or five plays to put him in a position to succeed is a good idea.

But sending Williams to the bench and starting Ogletree also takes on the rookie mistakes he will surely make. Because this is a different game than one he has played in the past.

And there are things skilled professionals - the vets in the league - will do to confuse him.

Ogletree is the grapes on the vine waiting to ripen and be picked.

As Orson Welles said, "We will sell no wine before it's time."

Now to Williams.

Garrett needs to target things he does well and put him in a position to succeed. That is what coaching is all about.

Go back to the routes he runs well, then exploit those. Get his sea legs under him again.

Build his confidence.

What fans think is unimportant.
This would make sense if getting open had anything to do with the problems facing Roy Williams. Unfortunately, it isn't. You can't build a player's confidence in catching a ball when he is wide open by running better routes. His ability to get open is not in question - in fact, his ability to get open and then drop passes WHILE openis precisely the complaint against him.

"No. 2" gets one catch for 4 yards?

yesterday was not an abida-abida-abida abberation. Roy Williams is not a player at this time.
And we as fans and the Cowboys as a team should not be forced to wait for this prima dona to flower.

RW has excuses. He feels insecure.

He was smiling after not catching that ball that was in his hands yesterday. the fans were not smiling.
He is just flat-out a third-string player at this point.
Someone wake me up when the coaching staff does what it is supposed to do and insert a younger and hungrier player as RW's replacement.
We cannot baby this player. He's taking up space and using up air in the field.

Give him up to the raiders or browns or the Bucs for a 4th rounder, cause that is the best deal we're gonna get.

Roy's biggest problem is that he is looking to run before catching the ball, he is pressing to hard to make a big play. Someone needs to tell him to quit pressing and just make the catch, worry about the run if its there later.
