How is this possible?

Time to shut it down.

Not really. I am, however, suggesting that many would work really hard to find a justification for why it wasn't offensive.

"...The American public has been conditioned by sports industry, educational institutions, and the media to trivialize Indigenous culture as common and harmless entertainment. On high school and college campuses Native American students do not feel welcome if the school uses as its mascot (not a clown, a mythical creature, or an animal) a Chief, the highest political position you can attain in our society. Using our names, likeness and religious symbols to excite the crowd does not feel like honor or respect, it is hurtful and confusing to our young people. To reduce the victims of genocide to a mascot is unthinking, at least, and immoral at worst. An educational institution's mission is to educate, not mis-educate, and to alleviate the ignorance behind racist stereotypes, not perpetuate them and to provide a nondiscriminatory environment for all its students, conducive to learning."

I think there are other issues that need to be worked out for the Native Americans before they worry about changing a Pro-teams name. High-rates of illiteracy, gambling and alcoholism, drugs and the marginalization of various tribes in the States are bigger problems than what the Commanders call themselves. Further, while the etymology of a word may be 'racist', it does not mean the etymology of the word has any bearing on how the word is understood today. There are countless cases in any language, where the etymology of a word may have negative connotations, but usage today has no relevance. If the Native Americans care, then so be it. But seriously... Talk about getting your priorities straight.

Hey, check this out. I'm about to stereotype and entire group of people and then bash a completely legitimate argument they have because they aren't working to improve that stereotype.

If it was offensive, if would have been taken down by now. I could be wrong, but I don't really hear the American Indians uproaring over it. Or are they?

they made University of Illinois get rid of the Chief logo and Mascot

Don't get me started. The jerseys are ugly, the name is stupid and they are in the same division as the Orlando Magic.

Bullets was a great name.

Good. As I said, the right thing annoys me sometimes.

I gave you an example.

There is a Commander Entertainment Magazine.

"How many more years must we uphold the negative representation perpetuated by the current non-native educational system? Why do we breath and speak the same hate for color and race? Why do we no longer accept the teachings from our ancestors? We at Commander magazine agree that the word 'Commander' is offensive to some of our people. However we no longer wish to promote the colonially religious educational adaptation of our blood, our race and our skin as a negative stereotype. We must learn something new in this age of ignorance, we must learn to think and live for ourselves! Commander magazine will never change or be ashamed of our red race or our red skin; we will always respect our women and our culture by never letting our teachings die."

You gave me an example of a magazine that is written for a group of them who don't mind it. Where exactly does that prove that the majority of them don't mind? Where is the data that proves that every single one of them was asked and that the majority overwhelmingly didn't care so that a person can make the statements, most, vast majority, all of?

You have quoted a magazine that is written and doesn't take offense to it and the magazine itself reminds people that they know there are people within their own race who do take offense to it.

So, again, I'm interested where anyone has this data that allows them to say most, or the majority of, Native Americans don't find it offensive. I have yet to see one piece of evidence that can accurately claim that because there isn't a piece of evidence out there with the opinions of all Native Americans attached to it.

Like I said I work with a Native American and according to him all of the Native Americans he knows (Family, friends, members that go to their Tribal festivals and stuff they have) absolutely despise the use of the word and find it offensive. So does that mean I should go around saying, "The majority of, or all Native Americans, find it offensive" because the ones I know do?

No.

OK first of all....

Second...

I'm a Cajun. Ya know what we are called???? Coonass. And ya know what? We call ourselves coonass. And ya know what? it's not that big of a deal.

The Native Americans have not been all up in arms over this. A few here and there have sued over it but then you have idiots who sue because they spill hot coffee on themselves.

If you are really offended by it, stop watching football. You can't legislate peoples crassness or their behavior where it stops their free speech.

They want to call themselves Commanders, so be it.

Though I do find some hilarity in it all when Danny Boy has to spend money and time in court defending it.

Because after all, it's the Commanders...

Whose stereo-typing? I'm referring to the clear marginalization of the Native American population in the United States that has been on-going since the inception of this country and pointing out that there are REAL issues, which things like this detract from. The etymology argument really has no practical validity, because the etymology has no bearing on the meaning of the word as it is understood today. There are countless words in language that are employed that were once considered derogatory, but nobody harps on them. It is just a fact of the evolution of language. The majority of people have no idea that the Commanders were derogatory to the Indians during the fifties, meaning it is NO LONGER RELEVANT IN TODAY'S CONTEXT. The other problems mentioned on the other hand ARE. When your filing a law-suit out of a name that really has no real PRACTICAL relevance on how your society is operating in the grand scheme of things, then it looks like your priorities are about making money, not helping your own people.

There have been numerous polls. Sports Illustrated did a poll and multiple colleges did polls when they were enforcing Native American stereotypes in the NCAA.

The overwhelming consensus was that they did not find the name offensive.

Hostile claims there polls that say the exact opposite, which I could believe though I have not seen them. I have no interest in this beyond professional football.

Like I said I work with a Native American and according to him all of the Native Americans he knows (Family, friends, members that go to their Tribal festivals and stuff they have) absolutely despise the use of the word and find it offensive. You could if you want. I would disagree.

Out of curiosity Cajun, why are you bringing back the peanuts debate?

Did I miss where someone else in here did, because that is my story about a fool Commanders fan and I don't think I brought it back up unless it was in response to Tomson's comment about my old thread.

I'll be disappointed in the Skins if they drop the name and copitulate to a few of politically correct wussies.

Copitulate?

Does that mean they are not going to resist having sex with the politically correct wussies?

I don't know. I remember seeing it before and thought it was funny. Honestly, I didn't see the picture of it in this thread. Maybe I missed it. Someone earlier said something about it and I googled the pic on the net. Why, was it a problem?

Plus, no one has coonass peanuts, which I find offensive. :D

You should start the brand.

I still say that Commanders fan is the dumbest fan of any sports team I have ever encountered.

I thought about it. Thought about calling it "Cajun Nuts." Something told me that would be a bad idea.

And of course they are dumb. They are Commander fans.

During the battle of New Orleans the Cajuns wore coonskin hats when they were fighting. So the term coonass came from that.

Some people think it's because we like eating raccoons. Heck, we like eating Alligator but we don't call ourselves aligatorass.
