How would you feel about an 11-5 no playoffs season?

Good teams don't make excuses like this. The Cardinals are going to make the playoffs using 3 starting QBs. The Eagles are going to win this division using 2.
The Eagles have won jack squat so far.

The Cardinals will be using their "3rd starting QB" with a playoff spot wrapped up already.

I'm not much of a thread starter but I really am interested in the responses.

Obviously nobody is going to be happy about missing the playoffs. That's not the point of this thread. I'm talking about how you would feel about the state of the team and it's immediate future.

Let's say the Cowboys win 2 of the next 3 games. Beat the Eagles, lose to the Colts, beat the Commanders. Or whatever way you want to do it. But they lose the tiebreakers for the division and wild card. They sit at home at 11-5. This is a pretty rare happening in the NFL.

What's your reaction? Is this the same team that can't close the deal and just misses the playoffs? Like every other year in recent memory? The record doesn't matter, all that matters is they came up short again?

Or was it just a flukey season, the team went 5-2 down the stretch, clear progress has been made and this is merely a case of some bad luck? No 11-5 team should ever be sitting at home watching a 7-9 division winner? This was a clear step forward towards 2015?

I say 11-5 and no playoffs. You say?

I ask because I really don't know.

Just another record of futility for Garrett...................no Cowboys team in the 54 year history of the franchise ever started a season 6-1 or better and missed the playoffs.............until Garrett showed up.

Add to that the first team in NFL history to allow 40 first downs in a game. (vs. Saints)

Add to that the first team in NFL history to lose a home game while scoring 45 points or more (vs. Denver)

Add to that the first team in NFL history to lose an OT game off a blocked punt (vs. Arizona)

I could go on and on about how many NFL records have been set in losing efforts under Garrett, but I think we all get the point. Maybe its just bad luck or bad karma for sins in a previous life for Garrett, but so far his tenure as an NFL head coach has been plagued with not just loses, but extraordinary losses............we are talking about losing games in a way that no NFL team or any Cowboys team ever lost.................if we miss the playoffs this year after a 6-1 start it will just be yet another record of futility under Garrett.

And before I am flamed as a "Garrett hater", please point out one thing that I said that is not factually true.............this will be the first Cowboys team ever to not make the playoffs after a 6-1 start...........we did allow the Saints to rack up 40 first downs last season...............we did lose a shootout to Denver last year, despite scoring over 45 points at home.................we did lose on a blocked punt in OT to Arizona in the infamous "icing the kicker game" where Garrett called a timeout just as Bailey drilled the game winner and then on the retry he missed it. In OT we went three and out and Arizona blocked the punt and returned if for a game winning OT TD, first time in NFL history a team won in OT by returning a blocked punt.

As I said, nothing but the facts......................and all of this went down under Garrett's watch.

Saying that the Cowboys will miss the playoffs is not a fact in any sense of the definition of the word. Nor did we lose on a blocked punt vs Arizona under Garrett. That was Wade.

Any other year, 11-5 gets you in the playoffs. I'd take it and consider it as a big step in the right direction.

BTW, is it safe to assume you dont think whats being built here by Red is anything more than a house of cards?

If Floatly doesn't mind me throwing my .02 in on his behalf, I think the point he is trying to make is that the team is really not that much more improved over previous teams under Garrett because the same formula holds. We beat the scrub teams and lose to the good teams, that has been the MO of Garrett from day 1. That is why his record against teams under 500 is fantastic and his record against teams over 500 is terrible.

This season, we have so far played the 3rd easiest strength of schedule in the NFL.............7 of our 9 wins are against teams that are sub 500, just like every other year under Garrett. The two teams we have beat that are currently over 500 are Seattle and the Texans (temporarily).

These two next games are against teams that will finish the season over 500 in Philly and Indy.................if this team is different, it will start beating teams with winning records...............that's when you know improvement is happening, not beating the Titans and Jags of the NFL and pounding your chest.

I am not saying they are going to miss the playoffs my friend, we are simply talking hypotheticals.

In fact, in the prediction thread I have not only picked Dallas to beat Philly, I have picked Dallas to win out and take the East.....................I am simply talking "what ifs" regarding Risen's hypothetical question.

If I did not make that clear, I apologize.

If we beat the Eagles and Colts but lose to the Skins and miss the playoff, I would officially be on the Garrett has to go bandwagon.

Another week 17 playoff-qualifying loss? Hadn't really thought about that possibility. Now that you mention it, it's probably inevitable.

I'd have to honor the team and its staff for earning an 11-5 record to finish out the year. Whether they made the playoffs or not, there's no denying that that degree of improvement is deserving of due respect. They may have lost a very winable game vs. the Commanders but certainly won several that spoke quite well of their development. Let's consider the fact that they actually achieved far more than most of us expected before this season ever got underway.

Only on the zone could people be truly upset and express an unholy rage at an 11 win season because of an abnormal NFC South.

Its like people don't feel embarrassment and are happy to parade their ignorance for the entire world to see.

w

we have one of the best Offensive Coordinators in the business

I think the playcalling is fine and Linehan is good.

The schemes he inherited are just too basic and not dynamic.

Although, I know we have bubble screen plays like Denver and New England but we don't use it nearly enough... Dez and Beasley both could kill teams who load the box against us over and over if we did it more.

IMO, we should have made the playoffs multiple times in the Garrett era.
The fact that we could miss in a year that has benefited chiefly from the reduction of his game day influence, isn't an argument for his retention.

I had this team with 6 wins prior to the season. So, 11 wins with no playoffs would not be a total disappointment. It would certainly be disappointing to not see Romo and Witten get a chance in January, and get the younger players some valuable playoff experience.

Certainly, the oline is a bright spot moving forward, the same treatment needs to be applied to the dline starting this offseason. My excitement about the immediate future is tempered by 1)the qb has a very limited window left, and 2) the same 2 lunatics, JJ and son, are still running the franchise.

I'd see it as an improvement but hate that at some point, we let a game slip away, that cost us a Playoff birth.

I'd be disappointed by the statistical improbability of the whole thing. Also, Witten and Romo have a quickly evaporating shelf life and their replacements are questionable or non-existent.

I do think that every year the last couple. Is this the last year where Romo can be a top tier QB?
