The draft is fun but the area where most teams get their greatest improvement is the progress of their young players. I'm talking about those guys that are entering their 2nd and 3rd seasons. It's their growth that improves a team the most.
I always look at rookies improving a team the following season. They might do a few nice things this season for us but nobody should expect a superstar performance from a rookie.
I think what fans talked about Tyler Smith the most was his potential, how good he would be in the future. I think he's going to be great next season, perhaps even Po Bowl level. I think Sam Williams is going to be one of the greatest surprises.
I think we only saw a few small samples of what Damone Clark can be in this league. I think he will be far more confident and better conditioned. Few thought he was even going to play last season.
Then there is DaRon Bland in the defensive backfield with Diggs and Gilmore.
I don't think our rookie TE is just going to walk in and take the starting position, he'll have to compete with two 2nd year guys that understand the offense far more than last season.
It's even possible to see some contributions from Tolbert or Waletzko.
Players from the 2021 draft are now entering their third season. It's difficult to visualize an improved Micah but it is possible, along with improvement from Osa, Golston, Cox. Bohanna, Fehoko, etc.
If we were to increase all of these guy's contributions from last season then I think it would represent a sizable improvement to the team and their chances to winning a championship.
There are notable exceptions but most rookies need a season to acclimate to the NFL game and everything that comes with it.
About a half dozen rookies will be real difference makers this season. Of course, they will be mostly high 1st round picks at skill positions or the playmaker positions on defense, EDGE and CB.
This was mostly a meat and potatoes type draft for the Cowboys that will hopefully pay bigger dividends in future seasons.
