I Like Beer A Lot

Just got a call from my doc, liver levels (whatever the hell that means) are down from two weeks ago, but they're still high. Wth! 27 days, thought it would be back to normal. I guess I've really done a number on my liver boozing as hard as I have for the past 10 years, off and (but mostly) on.

I've never had lab results come back bad like this.

Have to get another lab in 6 weeks :(

The good news is they are going down. You'll be ready for training camp.

Put me in now, Coach! :)

I'll be ready by then for sure, and that's what I thought, too :) When the test comes around it will be during the beginning of training camp, so there's that!

DIAGNOSIS
Diagnosing ALD is a challenge. A history of heavy alcohol use along with certain physical signs and positive laboratory tests for liver disease are the best indicators of disease. Alcohol dependence is not necessarily a prerequisite for ALD, and ALD can be difficult to diagnose because patients often minimize or deny their alcohol abuse. Even more confounding is the fact that physical exams and lab findings may not specifically point to ALD (9).

Diagnosis typically relies on laboratory tests of three liver enzymes: gamma–glutamyltransferase (GGT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). Liver disease is the most likely diagnosis if the AST level is more than twice that of ALT (9), a ratio some studies have found in more than 80 percent of alcoholic liver disease patients. An elevated level of the liver enzyme GGT is another gauge of heavy alcohol use and liver injury. Of the three enzymes, GGT is the best indicator of excessive alcohol consumption, but GGT is present in many organs and is increased by other drugs as well, so high GGT levels do not necessarily mean the patient is abusing alcohol.

TREATMENT
Treatment strategies for ALD include lifestyle changes to reduce alcohol consumption, cigarette smoking, and obesity; nutritional therapy; pharmacological therapy; and possibly liver transplantation (in case of cirrhosis).

yes but this waking up every night thing started happening after my accident/weight loss.
at least i can sleep 7 hours combined now.
much better than the 4-5 hours 2 years ago...

My doc emphatically said cirrhosis is of no concern.

What is ALD? I haven't been diagnosed with anything, but thanks for getting me paranoid, Putty, I'm gonna call him back, now :angry:

from everything we have read and your doc, you do not have cirrhosis.

those tests i listed were the standard tests - sounds like those are what levels are about.
you were confused about the tests so i looked it up from NIH website.

My doc said the levels can go back down to normal. I just left a message, hope he returns my call soon, and am gonna ask him about this stuff.

Once it does down I can drink again right?

He originally said my liver was 4x what it should be, two weeks ago on my first lab, but I didn't ask the specifics, only if cirrhosis was at stake.

Is this what he was referring to?
