If the Cowboys don't go heavy in FA, why not re-sign Dak?

I AM on the Dak Bandwagon and extending him at 60 mil a year will still allow us to get the top FA players needed.

I mean, if we don't extend him, who's gonna replace him?

Give the man his bag and let's go get those blue chip FAs!
Like who? Next year FA class? We can have no cap and the Jones' will find an excuse to not participate again

Would this team go out and get the top DT, RB or LB on the free agent market if we had a QB on a rookie deal or even between 20-30 mil a year? Probably not.

I'm not on the Dak bandwagon, but the best bet is probably extending Dak and shoring up the run offense AND defense.
The reason we dont get those FAs is not because we are not there without a qb. The reason is our ideologly: we dont build thru FA we build with the draft.

24 will be a transition year for us. We will have a look and see who is worth to keep and who not. It is a good time for that kind of season because your biggest asset, the most expensive one, QB, will not be under contract next year. And most of your "coming of age" players like CD, micah and so on dont have a 2nd contract: You are not commited to the future yet.

So its the best time to have a look and see year. You are able to veriy easily clean house and make new longterm commitements afterwards.

Salaries of pro athletes are debated and talked about every single day by sports media and journalist.

They don't PERSONALLY care what an athletes bank account looks like.....they discuss it because there's a pesky little thing called a SALARY CAP and a players salary need to be commensurate with his salary cap burden so it's fair game.

If the sports media and its journalist are allowed to discuss it without triggering somebody; why can't the fans?

Nobody personally gives a fat crap what another man makes so the virtue signaling doesn't apply here
The bottom line is the MARKET for QBs dictate what they get paid. So what we want him to make does not even matter.....Dak is a unrestricted FA at the end of the year...so he will get market value from us or somebody else. It is NOT that hard to understand.

I personally think Dallas wants Dak..but NOT at market value. And that is the part that is perplexing to me. The Cowboys are the highest valued franchise in the history of ALL sports...do you think they became that by making BELOW market deals?

This is NOT that complicated!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is their own fault for the Dak "situation". We as fans are held hostage by the ineptness of this front office. Ineptness that has been in place LONG before Dak became the QB!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think its all about the money, they want a QB that has won them a championship. The only way they resign him is if he get's it done in his final contractual season.

It’s the team cap.

They don’t have a lot of room.

Because of the mega million $$$ being spent on Dak.

It doesn’t get better until after 2025. [$40 mill dead cap in 2025 for Dak.]

So why would they make the problem worse by spending more on Dak?

That’s why they want to replace Dak with Lance.

What a man makes does not matter. Many forget that this is still their job...lol. It doesn't matter of the income. If a man makes 200k, then a man that make 10k a year can say what goes in his pockets? Lol...no.
We do it all the time but it only seems to be an issue when we are talking about pro athletes for some reason. This November my local ballot is likely to have both a minimum wage and local school levy on the ballot. We will literally be voting on if people get fired or raises. People complain all the time about C and director level individuals making up proportionate money all the time.

I don’t understand at all the issue of fans having an opinion on what athletes are paid, especially in a salary cap league. These are decisions that can make or break the future of the franchise that those same fans are spending money to support.

What if they don't re-sign Dak and...
Option 1: Dak wins the Super Bowl.

Option 2: Dak sucks in the playoffs..
If they don’t resign Dak it becomes pretty irrelevant to cowboy fans...or at least should other than those who want to say “I told you so”.

If the cowboys become eliminated I’d most likely be rooting for Dak at that point, so I’d be hoping for option 1….just depending on what team he ends up with lol. Don’t see me rooting for that if he went to the Giants.

Yeah and that’s kind of my point. Goff is getting credit for this Lions turn around and it seems to be unwarranted.
Aah, sometimes I'm slow. Now I see exactly what you're saying. Goff is just one piece that they needed to be compensated to take off the Rams hands. The new GM and coach, and some good draft picks turned the team around.

He is not. GM Jethro made it that way by choice. Huge difference. His contract this year was for $29M + his prorated signing bonus. Total I believe was $42M.
I'm just going by what you said, which was correct. If he's a 40M cap hit next year, a 4 year 55M a year contract would be 65M a year. But that's only if he plays out this season at a 55M cap hit.

Why? He brings up valid points. Dak has struggled without strong supporting casts, and has failed in the post season with them.

I like the guy and appreciate what he's given back to the community. He's been a warrior on the field. I admire his toughness and appreciate the memories that he's made.....but he has his flaws, and unfortunately it seems one of those is inconsistency in big moments. He's a damn good bus driver, but he needs help in big moments, and paying him 55-60m makes it very difficult to bring in the necessary components for success.

I just don't see how more of the same salary cap restrictions will lead to different results. Parsons and Lamb have contracts coming up. Diggs Is being paid well. Then Tyler Smith, and whoever else proves they're worth keeping around. All names listed are the foundation that this team needs to build around, but they can't all stay if Dak gets the contract that he wants. Has Dak earned the right to compromise the young foundation of this team? 2 playoff wins, 9 years? I don't think so, but you're entitled to your opinion.
My comment was because it's more of the same trash that is constantly spewed around here.....blaming one player for everything. It's lazy. It's not scientific. It's not original. It's hate.

The QB market sucks. I've stated there are hundreds of financial vehicles to ease the QB market but the league doesn't want that. And...none of these high paid GMs or owners think the internet forum GMs suggestion of going with a rookie is worth pursuing. Maybe that's changing...but these owners and GMs want a QB and supply and demand has them prices high.

My main point is that the same old argument of blaming one player for everything has ruined this board...along with the constant unfair standard of 'win a super bowl or don't get paid'....it's lame and none of these posters would like to be treated that way at their job.

From your post, I'm calmer than you. And just like you said, I can give my opinion also.....chief!
You called an opinion on re-signing an NFL player "disturbing." You lose all credibility right there. Try not to take life so seriously, eh?

I'll give another opinion: I'd never hire you to do anything. Wouldn't even let you work for free! There, I made another opinion about what I felt another human should make! So "disturbing!"

Because saddling you with a QB who can't step up in the big moments doesn't make much sense. Sort of like why did the 49-ers not just extend Jimmy G - he after all took them to the Super Bowl right? I seriously think that the first half by Dak against what was clearly a weak GB team sort of shocked Jerry. I mean it would have been one thing if the game was close but it wasn't even that and as much as we want to point the finger at a banged up defense, the offense which was both healthy and has the lions share of the resources dedicated to it basically couldn't move the ball and could barely do anything of consequence.

Sure it does. Paying bonus money now allows teams to move that cap number around. I’m going off estimates here but as of right now the cowboys have roughly $62M in cap space for 2025, $170M in 2026, and $250M in 2027.

They have some of the most cap flex in football right now and by a large margin. To compare a team like Philly is roughly $120M under the cap for those three years where the cowboys are just under $500M.
No, it doesn't. That artificially creating room which you pay for dearly down the road.

This year we appear to be cleaning it up, badly needed.

Firmly believe the only reason that they haven't extended Dak, is that his agent is waiting for Tua and Lawrence to sign extensions and once they do then we will see negotiations start in earnest between the Jones and Dak's agent. Fairly sure Dak's agent wants a 4 year deal and Dallas wants a 6 year deal. A 4 year deal means a sizable contract at the end of 4 years at 34 while Dallas wants control for 6 years.

I know plenty of fans that want to move on from Dak except none of them offer any plan of life after Dak. Losing isn't an option in Dallas and never has been. Hitting on a draft pick next year is 50-50 at best and would guarantee you that the analytics of those QBs next year then probably goes down to 25-75. Jerry isn't getting younger and wants his best shot at a Super Bowl run the next 3 years running. He isn't going to tank a season and neither are the players. You want Arch Manning, fine, but be willing to anti up every draft pick for 2 years to go to the top and get him in 2026 because that is what it will take.

Dallas has, at least for the last 5 years, mainly build through the draft and will even more so if the analytics work at well from this draft. Analytics can tell them who is the best player that fits their schemes in every round when making the picks. Regardless of what the so-called experts say of where a guy should be drafted, analytics is strictly about the player and how that player would perform for this offense or defense scheme.

Fairly certain that the analytics are also figured in on what the extensions should be with a top and bottom amount and based on the salaries of the others at those positions.

It is business of the NFL now.

No, the best time to clean house would be now while they still have value. We always wait until the value is nothing, which is why we don't ever have extra high picks in the draft. Has Jerry ever gotten more than an extra 3rd? I remember that happening twice, but that's about it.

Except in the playoffs, then losing is the only option. Need an NFL GM to fill the gaps and build a playoff team.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the Cowboys are in the wrong for cleaning up their cap situation, I'm just saying the flexibility is there for them to do whatever they want. This is 100% a choice by the Joneses and not something where their hands are tied.

Pushing money down the road isn't a bad thing when done correctly though. Having $10M against the cap when it's $300M vs when it's $250M is a smart thing to do sometimes, especially with unused money that can be rolled over into the following year. The worst thing they can do is forever manage the cap on a 1 year basis while every other team in the league is leveraging future funds to build their team now. They'll simply forever be at a talent disadvantage unless they hit year after year on their draft classes.

Depends on if you have a super bowl type team. If you don't, it's foolish.

True, but I was just addressing the OPs assertion that we personally care about players salaries for some nefarious reasons......it's just a matter of value for salary cap burden regardless of if the market setting it......which we know it does.
