If the Cowboys Don't Sign a Better Back Up QB, They've Lost their Minds

I don't like how Jerry gets sentimentally attached to players. It seems like once you get on Jerry's good side, he'll keep you around for a while even if it's detrimental to the team.

We've seen this since Emmit, and several other players.

People say it was one of the worst drafts for quarterbacks, and there's some truth to that. But it wasn't so bad that you can't go pick up one of the better prospects in last year's draft to be your backup for a while, or at least 3rd string to develop.

Carson Strong had a knee injury and was told never to play again. But he went back and played and played very well. Like 70 percent completion rating and has a freaking cannon for an arm.

Then, the guy that whipped us from Denver, Josh Johnson, is also out there, if you need a healthier guy without the potential for a knee injury.

I'm cool with them keeping one of those three guys. To me, it doesn't matter who, but I would suggest Greir or DiNucci if you just have to keep one.

I think we all know that it's entirely possible to upgrade at backup quarterback.

Yes, it's nice to be able release all of your QBs knowing that no one is stupid enough to pick them up so you can stash guys on IR.

But when it comes time to play a game, and Dak gets hurt, we're going to wish we had better players than these guys.

Enough with this sunk cost nonsense.

Cut bait and upgrade.

I hate to use such a cliche' term, but this is such a no-brainer.

If Dak misses a game or two I'd like a nice back up. If he's out the season, I don't care. At that point it doesn't matter anyway.

Try scrolling up and reading.....

My OP talks about strong.

You can lead a horse to water...but you can't make him read.

Strong never played in preseason.

ive been following the Strong situation all preseason and the Eagles thought they coild stash him.

So far, they've done that..

I'm sure you have a point about something somewhere in here. just not evident

I skimmed over the OP. I read the posts you sent me. You commented to me if I watched the Denver game. You then brought up Strong as if he was the QB we were going up against vs Denver. I had no idea what you were talking about. Carson Strong had a worse preseason in Philly than any of the backup QBs we had. We’ll likely re-sign one of the QBs we let go.

Rush will probably be back. But I don't think it's be very hard to find an upgrade to him on the market

At this stage it would be very difficult to find an upgrade over him. Any QB that’s good isn’t going to be released, they’ll be traded. Teams don’t release good QBs. Rush has been good enough to stick around with us for a few seasons and he played an excellent game last year against Minnesota. He may not be very good but the one advantage he gives us is he’s been with the team. At least the QBs we had got familiar with some of the receivers and were able to build a little chemistry with them. It would be stupid to go out and find a QB sitting on the street that didn’t spend the summer with us at OTA’s and training camp.

These are things that should be addressed in the off season…but this is the Cowboys. I don’t think they actually have a plan…and if they do, they need a better plan.

When one considers that the highest draft pick at the qb position in the last 22 years was Quincy Carter in the 2nd round, it’s no surprise they put little thought towards the quarterback position, starting and backup alike.

Quincy Carter, Isiah Stanback, Stephen McGee, Rayne Prescotta, and Bendover Denuci rounds out the list of elite talent drafted by our Cowboys since 2001…….pretty sweet talent here, huh?

Funny how you skipped Romo's name.

Ok, dear Sir, lol.

I understand your point. I have made many posts criticizing the FO’s lack of drafting at the qb position for many years. Then they compounded it by bring in the Ryan Leafs, Brandon Weedens and Brad Johnson’s of the world instead of drafting worthwhile qbs.

I just don’t understand how little importance they give the most important position of the sport.

"We go how Zeke goes." - Uncle Jerry

Over the last 30 years the Cowboys have spent more first round picks on RBs than QBs. Perhaps it's just as well, since the last two QBs Jerry wanted to use a first on were Johnny Football and Paxton Lynch.

Who is available that is markedly better? Just asking as I haven't looked at the other team's cuts. Thanks!

If you didn’t bring in a better backup QB all summer, it makes no sense to bring one in the first week of the season. Once you’re in real game mode, how do you get the new guy up to speed when the backup gets almost no reps with the offense.

Like Stephen McGee or Mike White? They drafted Dak despite their best efforts to draft two guys who are out of the league, earlier in that draft.

Drafting QBs isn't exactly their strength.

You make a couple of good point here. Still, they should continue to use the occasional mid-round pick on a QB that has some potential to develop. It's going to be hit or miss in the mid rounds. Even high picks are no sure thing. They will have some busts like you mentioned, but will also find the occasional player worth developing. (Dak for example)

At least in the mid-rounds you can find a QB with some credentials. Instead, the Cowboys are bargain hunting in the very late rounds, or bringing in undrafted players. We all know the exceptions like Brady or Romo, but statistical analysis has shown that you generally get what you pay for, in terms of draft capital, at the QB position.
