If the Cowboys Don't Sign a Better Back Up QB, They've Lost their Minds

I don't like how Jerry gets sentimentally attached to players. It seems like once you get on Jerry's good side, he'll keep you around for a while even if it's detrimental to the team.

We've seen this since Emmit, and several other players.

People say it was one of the worst drafts for quarterbacks, and there's some truth to that. But it wasn't so bad that you can't go pick up one of the better prospects in last year's draft to be your backup for a while, or at least 3rd string to develop.

Carson Strong had a knee injury and was told never to play again. But he went back and played and played very well. Like 70 percent completion rating and has a freaking cannon for an arm.

Then, the guy that whipped us from Denver, Josh Johnson, is also out there, if you need a healthier guy without the potential for a knee injury.

I'm cool with them keeping one of those three guys. To me, it doesn't matter who, but I would suggest Greir or DiNucci if you just have to keep one.

I think we all know that it's entirely possible to upgrade at backup quarterback.

Yes, it's nice to be able release all of your QBs knowing that no one is stupid enough to pick them up so you can stash guys on IR.

But when it comes time to play a game, and Dak gets hurt, we're going to wish we had better players than these guys.

Enough with this sunk cost nonsense.

Cut bait and upgrade.

I hate to use such a cliche' term, but this is such a no-brainer.
They literally just started Cooper Rush last year and won a game with him lol....

I guess Jerry should pick up the phone and just get a "good" backup.

IF the Bucs are smart, they will sign both to 14-day contracts and sign Maher also, thus denying the Boys of all QB backups and kicker for the first game.

He's long gone. He was the exception when he was here anyway.

What was the investment in the current backup / developmental QB spot?
Almost nothing
They've had Mike White, Dinucci, Rush........Dak was a developmental guy before he took Romo's spot.....what else do you want?

Without using Google tell me the names of the backup QBs for the last 5 super bowl winners? Y’all have some weird priorities. Any NFL guy will tell you, if your starter gos down. YOU’RE DONE

Oh, yeah, anyone of them, except for the ones who actually know what they're talking about.

The ones who know what they're talking about will tell you that every position on the team matters, even the backup quarterback.

See how I even made my point without screaming in caps?

You understand that Romo was a backup, Brady was a backup at one point in time. And believe it or not, Nick Foles won 4 playoff games, as a backup.

I suppose he was also [sic] DONE.

It's about being prepared for an injury, but it goes even beyond that. I won't argue with you anymore about it, since you already know so much.

If I didn't leave room for the fact that I could be wrong sometimes, I'd probably still think as you do as well.

I've already stated what I want: More draft capital allocated to the backup/developmental QB position.
And what pick? The team already only builds their team through the draft but you're suggesting they don't actually fill holes in the starting lineup but use those for a developmental QB who probably won't even be on the roster in a few years?

If Aaron Rodgers gets hurt, the Packers are done. Same for Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Tom Brady, Joe Burrow, Matt Stafford, Justin Herbert, etc, etc, and Dak Prescott.

One of these is not like the others..........

The comments remind me why I don’t post here that often / it’s a shame that a couple trolls garnish so much of the attention

I skimmed over the OP. I read the posts you sent me. You commented to me if I watched the Denver game. You then brought up Strong as if he was the QB we were going up against vs Denver. I had no idea what you were talking about. Carson Strong had a worse preseason in Philly than any of the backup QBs we had. We’ll likely re-sign one of the QBs we let go.

And yet still. This goes right over your head.

I never sent you anything. I merely replied to your question about who out there might be better even if you were being rhetorical about it.

It's not my fault you can't keep up with the conversation and the topic of the thread.

I enjoy a good debate. I respect people, even those who vehemently disagree with me. But some people just aren't worth arguing with. I consider you one of those people.

Because even after I simply tell you to read, the plain, simple English that I explained my thoughts in, your response is intellectually dishonest enough to accuse me being "hard to follow" when it was you just being too lazy to follow.

I'm a very simple-minded person. I don't complicate things or use big words.

I misread someone the other day, but the difference was I apologized and owned it when I glanced over something and misread them. In this case, despite the fact that I'm talking about Strong in the OP, you're still sticking to your guns that I was being hard to follow because I brought up Strong. You just can't win with someone like yourself.

I'm not stupid.

You're sitting here talking about how bad Strong's preseason was . . . because you watched the games? You seriously, really and truly think Cooper Rush, Greir, DiNucci are better prospects at this point than Carson Strong?

When was DiNucci ever projected to be a first round pick by any scout, at any level? Rush? Grier?

That's right, they never were.

The fact that you do think that tells me all I need to know, that, again, you're not worth my time. And I certainly don't enjoy conversing with you like most of the others here.

And it's actually more likely that the Eagles, who have the luxury of having 4 decent QBs (albeit mostly back up level QBs) on their roster, are downplaying Strong because the Eagles want to bring him back to their PS? Or it could even be as I was suggesting could be another scenario, that Strong just didn't want to play in Philly, as the 3rd or 4th guy, on the worst NFL team you could probably play for, outside of maybe a couple of others.

But I'm sure you're not going off of anything you saw with your own eyes. And even if you were, it's not like you know the difference anyway, because you can't tell much of a difference between Cooper Rush and Carson Strong. You're only saying he had a bad preseason, because that's what the Philly fanboys in the media are just NOW saying, after they were all up in arms about Strong not playing. It was a stash move, still is.

If it isn't, then surely he won't make it back to their PS, right?

You may have the last word, since we're done here. At least I am. I don't deal in lies.

Did you really just use Emmitt Smith as an example?

Never mind the last time I said it: THIS is now the dumbest post ever.

You never know toots. Ole Rush may play another game like he did against Minnesota SHOULD he have to take over.

There's always a bright side -------> runs

I'm aware what he can do.

But I challenge you to go watch that game, and tell me how much of that was from our offensive line and our skill position players' athleticism after the catch.

It's not like he put the team on his shoulders and won it that way, he drove the dink and dunk bus to victory. The team really did rally around him that day, and his performance was nothing spectacular even if he did get the win.

I'm not trying to overcomplicate this. I'm simply interested in improving our backup spot. That's all.

It's just difficult to have that kind of discussion when others (not you) are being disingenuous, for whatever reason.

I did.

And I don't have a problem saying it. I'm also not stuck, living in the 90s anymore like a lot of you.

Emmitt may have been the best to ever play.

But Emmitt played past his prime. Way past. He's the most glaring example. But there were dozens of others of Jerry's boys who were also below average players by the time they finally retired. Only recently, have the Cowboys focused on youth as a commodity.

If it hurts your feelings that Emmit wasn't very good his last year or two, I don't care. Anyone being objective about his performance during that time would agree that Emmitt went from one of the best to ever play the game to a JAG.

Jerry did finally show him the door, though. Yet Emmitt still didn't want to retire. He wanted to pad his rushing record stats, and played for the Cardinals.

My favorite moment as a Cowboy fan, ever, was when Roy Williams made Emmitt Smith cry, because Emmitt was being a classless jerk, talking about diamonds and trash, which was ironic. And so were his tears.

You see, I'm a team kind of guy. Ask anyone I work with.

I put the team above any single player, even for the likes of Tony Romo, who is my all-time favorite, or Darren Woodson, my 2nd favorite.. But at least those two guys knew when to hang them up.

Emmitt's ego about getting the rushing record held back his teammates, and his performance overall in those final years was detrimental to the team overall. He was so bad at that point, Troy Hambrick beat him out.

Troy wasn't even drafted. He got on the team at that time because Darren Hambrick was our linebacker, and they brought him in as an UDFA to see if he could run.. And sure enough, he was not that good. But he was surely better than Emmitt by that time. And by a good margin. He played FB for a while, but still ran better than Emmitt

Anyway, this thread is about backups. My point is about Jerry's tendency toward the sunk cost fallacy. He's always done that. I suspect that's the psychology at play with keeping these guys on our roster too.

Some of you are so offended by this notion that maybe our backup could improve that you'll distort facts and present flimsy logic to make your argument.

Anyway.. I'm glad you think Emmitt was so great toward the end of his career. Says a lot about the person calling me stupid.

This was my question and this is what you sent me. What did watching the Broncos preseason game have to do with anything? I thought you were referring to the QB that was playing for the Broncos in the first half of that game, he lite us up. Turned out it was Josh Johnson. I know nothing about Carson Strong. Like I told you I skimmed over your OP.

Know of any QB that’s currently available that’s sure to be better than Cooper Rush or Will Grier? Wouldn’t be a very wise move signing some scrub on the street who’s never taken a snap with the team. There’s a reason we have training camp. The Cowboys made a trade for Matt Cassel a few years ago during the season and he ended up being worse than the QBs we had.

Did you watch the Broncos preseason game?

Have you ever watched tape of Strong in college?.

Exactly. Use a mid-round pick, as I have said repeatedly. Maybe a 3rd-5th round pick every few years. Rinse and repeat.

Assuming Rush is re-signed to be the backup QB, the Cowboys will have a grand total of zero draft capital allocated to the backup QB spot. That's an underinvestment at an important position.
