If you are Leary do you demand a trade?

Free would be nice trade piece to someone like the rams that has a hole at tackle but the new deal is prohibitive.

Free would be one of the best swing tackles in the league and guarantees they can prepare Green or whoever before they have to play him. He would still be a tremendous asset.

I was thinking about this. If Chaz Green looks good in camp and the preseason, maybe you peddle Leary for a pick.

I wouldnt mind seeing if we could pry Tre Mason off the Rams.

Leary has decent enough trade value. Good overall young OG who has improved. May not be a guy you build around but he is a solid piece. Also a major enforcer on the field. Cheap too. A 3rd or a 4th would seem reasonable.

IMO Bernaduea offers more as a backup because he can play all three intiror positions

Leary is going to work his tail off because he knows he has some serious competition for his starting LG position. None of the rookies have proven anything yet, and will all probably need a year of seasoning before they make a serious push for a starting position. All this competition will make all players involved better ...

Leary doesn't have to be better than La'el Collins. He just has to be better than Doug Free.

Is it confirmed that Collins will play LG? I dont trust Free to stay healthy at all.Leary will be gone next year but there is no way we trade and deplete our depth.

Exactly,,,,plus Leary only counts something like 500K against the cap....

there have been hints that Free is not recovering as fast as they had hoped. Those ankles have had a lot of work done on them.

The cap hit for trading Free would only be 1.5MM more to trade him than keep him, it wouldn't be prohibitive to trade him if the right offer was there. But at the price of his cap hit, it makes a lot more sense to keep him as the swing tackle than trade him. The real issue is his health like others have said, I think Collins will get plenty of reps at both LG and RT and both he and Chaz Green will get a ton of attention from Frank Pollack - starting tomorrow.

Exactly. An all under 27 offensive line sounds good but generally doesn't work that good in practice. Free despite being the second worst on the line, brings a lot to the line according to pretty much every one of his teammates.

Smith 5th year
Fred 3 rd year
Leary 4th year
Martin 2nd year
there is enough experience there IF Free doesn't perform well.

He is in a contract year, and he basically just found out he will almost for sure be a backup this year, do you do what you can to get out of Dallas or are you content with being a backup knowing that with this line you will likely see some action. I don't see the Cowboys wanting to trade him (Berdy is basically the only backup interior lineman we have right now) but I don't see Leary wanting to stay here either.

He is going to the great white north.

They would have to eat 4.5M if they trade Free. The hit would be 1.5M in 2015 and 3M in 2016.

Another team might be willing to give up more in a trade for him than normal because 4.5M of his contract would be paid by the Cowboys.

Injuries can happen so no, that would be a poor idea. Don't forget that Parnell just signed a massive contract for $32 million with $13 mil guaranteed and he had seven career starts.

Leary is not in a contract yr, in 2016 he will be RFA, Dallas can just tender him. Hes not a UFA until 2017. He aint going anywhere unless somebody wants to trade for him.

I think you let the players battle it out then look to trade the loser the the end of camp depending on the health of the linemen. Right now, it's possible Free won't be healthy and we'll need Leary.

Now, if someone makes us an offer we can't refuse ...

If they trade Free, they eat the whole cap hit this year. You only get to split the obligation if you release the player.

Another saying..."A high tide raises all boats." Even if Leary loses his starting spot, if the Cowboys have a dominant OL, he'll still get paid by a desperate team that's way under the cap and needs to spend money (see: Parnell, Jeremy).
