Today's Cowboys reminds so much of the Dave Campo Cowboys......only difference is Jason Garrett has a QB and a team with some talent....they coach the same. Plus Jason Garrett is just another Jerry Jones whipping boy.... just like Campo

Cowboy FANS are never afraid to predict good things for the Cowboys they do it every year because they have nothing to lose. It's not like they have a track record for being right to protect. There's no method behind these glowing predictions it's just the FAN in them coming out every spring and summer. When it comes to predicting a season for any team especially the Cowboys you have to look at their previous season to gage the direction they're heading in. Some say it doesn't matter what happened the previous year this is a new season but how a team performed and finished the previous season can tell you a lot about the direction they're heading in. Heading into the 2013 season everyone knew Seattle would be a serious SB contender based off their 2012 season that produced a playoff win. You could see something special was on the horizon by how the Seahawks performed in 2012 with their rookie QB. The arrow was pointing up and continued to go up. How they performed in 2012 gave the team confidence and it carried over to the the following year..

Tell that to the Texans.

If you examine the history of the NFL most teams that have gone from bad/mediocre for a period of years to a championship contender over night was due either to a head coaching change or a change at QB. The 99 Rams who were 4-12 the year prior came out of nowhere to win the SB after Kurt Warner took over. The 01 Pats went from a 5-11 team the year prior to winning the SB after Brady took over. The 2011 49ers who hadn't made the playoffs in years and were 6-10 the year prior went 13-3 and reached the NFC title game after Harbaugh took over. They've been a strong contender ever since.

99 Rams were going to have a new QB that year no matter what. So would they have been SB bound with Trent Green at the helm like planned? It also ignores the addition of Holt and Bly to that team as well, both really good players. The 2001 Pats not only added a couple decent players in Seymour and Light but went from below average defense to 6th in the league. For both, it was much more than a simple QB change that propeled them to success.

Garrett inherited a team that was only one year removed from a playoff win and was picked by many prior to the 2010 season to represent the NFC in the SB. When you hire a HC who inherits a talented team that has a top 10 QB and stay stuck at 8-8 three straight seasons you hired the wrong HC. The Cowboys are 2 games below 500 the last 4 years and have a long way to go to becoming a solid, consistent football team. It's not going to happen over night for a team that's been stuck at 8-8 for the past 3 seasons.

They weren't nearly as talented as people make them out to be. Holdovers from offense (may be missing a couple): Tony Romo, Jon Kitna, Stephen McGee, Tashard Choice, Felix Jones, Chris Gronkowski, Miles Austin, Dez Bryant, Jesse Holley, Manual Johnson, Kevin Ogletree, Titus Ryan, John Phillips, Phil Costa, Montrae Holland, Kyle Kosier, Sam Young, Doug Free. And you can do that with the defense.

Interesting reading throughout this thread.
My one comment here is that Dallas is going to have to strike it rich with a few of those 7th round draft picks for this team to be competitive this season.

Now, seriously...why would you make a guarantee like that when you obvious have zero control over what you just guaranteed?
LOL

It would be like me guaranteeing that the clock with strike 12:00 twice in one day. I don't have any control over that either.

Tell that to the Texans.

All you have to do to see what went wrong with the Texans in 2013 is compare Schaub's numbers with his production in 2012. He was terrific in 2012 and dreadful last season. Just look at the drop in his passer rating last season compared to his previous 5 seasons in Houston.

For both, it was much more than a simple QB change that propeled them to success.

The 99 Rams would have gone nowhere with Trent Green he was an average QB who had already flamed out in Washington. He was given a chance in DC and got the boot. The Rams needed an experienced QB and he was the best available. The Rams losing Green during the preseason in 99 proved to be the biggest blessing in disguise the NFL has ever seen. It gave Warner who had only attempted 11 NFL regular season passes his first opportunity to lead an NFL team. He turned out to be special something Trent Green wasn't.

Although the Rams had Holt who was a rookie that year and several other excellent players like Faulk Warner made it all come together. He was spectacular in 99 putting up over 4300 yards when 4000 passing yards weren't common. He had 41 TD's and a passer rating of 109.2. He ended up the league MVP and the SB MVP. Kurt Warner made that team what it was and had he never seen the field that season there's no championship or greatest show on tuff. It all started with his golden arm.

They weren't nearly as talented as people make them out to be. And you can do that with the defense.

The team was talented many of the players were part of the 13-3 07 team and the 11-5 09 team that earned the Cowboys their first playoff win in 13 years. The problem with the team it had a lot of underachievers due to playing for a cream puff HC. The Cowboys proved the year prior they could play at a championship level by beating the 13-0 Saints at the dome and going on to win the teams first playoff game in 13 years. Wade coddled his players after the big playoff win vs Philly and the Cowboys were never the same after the debacle in Minn the following week. Everyone was picking the Cowboys for the SB entering the 2010 season and Wade with all the praising he had for the players allowed them to become complacent which led to them quitting on him once it became apparent the Cowboys season was in the toilet.

I don't have kids...

But if I did, I can tell you that if my kids were constantly doing stupid ****, I wouldn't just ignore it and hope for, much less expect, them to be the best. I would be honest with them and myself and tell them what they need to do to correct their mistakes. Turning a blind eye to your kids' mistakes doesn't help them become better citizens.

You can parent how you want, and you can be a fan how you want. But don't tell me I don't love my (hypothetical) kids because I don't do it the way you do it. And don't tell me I'm not a FAN because I don't constantly pump sunshine up my team's ***.

So your tough love criticism of the team is helping them become better? Or is it making you the more proactive and thus a better fan?

That's true. He was bad last year. But they had other issues than just QB. Granted, a lot of those issues were injuries.

Green would have been better than you want to give him credit for (and I'm not just saying that because he went to Indiana). He wasn't HOF caliber QB but surrounded by those offensive weapons (Faulk, Holt, Bruce, Proehl, Hakim) they would have been contenders with Green. Heck, look what he did the next year in the 8 games he played in (started 5). 145/240, 60.4 pct, 2063 yards, 8.6 ave, 16 tds, 5 ints. More than respectable if you ask me. He went on to have several good seasons in KC.

The team was talented many of the players were part of the 13-3 07 team and the 11-5 09 team that earned the Cowboys their first playoff win in 13 years. Do you honestly think the 2011 Cowboys were close to the same overall talent level as the 2009 Cowboys?

I find it hard to believe people think a dog will still love them if they hit it 20 or more times a day. I am sure there are women who would stay with a man who tears up everything about her and professes love at the same time, but I don't get it. I'll never get it.

So, help me understand this analogy. Who is the whipped dog and the battered wife? The fans or the team?

The Ware comments specifically I couldn't agree more with. I think people are going to see a fresh, returned to form from injury D-Ware, and realise that Dallas made a mistake in letting him go.

I know everyone cries about the money thing but you find a way to work that out and you don't lose a guy like Ware. His loss will be felt a lot more than people seem to realise.

I agree that the talk that Ware is washed up is a little premature. He will have Von Miller opposite him and I think the Broncos will not ride him to be the bell cow with a collection of nobodies. But all in all, it was a bandaid that needed to be ripped off quickly. We could not keep holding onto him like a prized heirloom.

If the first line of the OP was 8-8 or 6-10 were both crap, I would have assumed >10-6 as 9-7 is one game off from 8-8.

My rule of thumb about predicting is usually plus or minus two. That means a six win team can win eight and so on. When people say 12-4, that crosses a threshold. Same for 11-5. That means, without question, the prediction is for a winning team. I cannot look at the talent available and the coaching we have and say that genuinely.

Obviously, I am not a gambling man--nor do I believe how many wins I predict emphasizes anything about my fandom, so there's that.

Maybe. Maybe not. Still, what's the point? Why just take shots at Hos when you could contribute something more interesting?

I don't judge who is a better fan or a worse fan.... Wish I could say the same for others.

And comments on a message board -- whether positive or negative -- don't help the team become better. I just don't see the fascination in lying to myself about the prospects of the team. It just conjures up ideas of entitlement to me. Like we're the Cowboys, so we should just be good damnit. Not every team thinks they're contenders every year... why should its fans?

Some folks in here think we're going to the playoffs every stinking year before the season starts, and we've been there 4 times since 2000. It's past time to shed the entitlement mentality.
