Jared Allen is 31 years old. Pass.

Who cares that he's 31. He's not showing any real signs of breaking down yet. He's played in every game the last 6 seasons and was in the top 10 for sacks last season. I'd take him and his double digit sacks :)

I do understand how highly unlikely this is but if the Cowboys could get both Melton and Allen I would feel a little better about our D-Line going into the draft.

It depends on what price you get them for. Dallas could easily sign both guys if they showered them with more money than other teams. They would have to re-do bunch of contracts and not get our from under cap for while. But it comes down to how Dallas perceives themselves. Do they think they are that close.

I'm not looking forward to older stop gap players. Even those that may still be good. This team needs to find young talent and groom them. If someone is over the age of 26 I am not overly excited. By the time this blind pig of a team finds the proverbial acorn, the older talent wouldn't even be on this team and we would be hoping that the new talent was okay. Why not play them and find out as soon as possible? Just my opinion.

The only ways you don't go with older, stopgap players is if you have young talent to groom or if you are in rebuilding mode. Dallas does not have that young talent on the defensive line, so it needs to try to build it while attempting to be competitive while it still has players like Romo and Witten on offense.

The ideal would be to have those older vets in place and replace them with younger talent over the next few years, but Dallas has been too busy trying to fill needs because of poor draftings/signings to focus on cycling players out.

It was that little bouquet from Hatcher that made Ben Bass a marked man on the dark side of CZ, CS. I'm sure Jared Allen isn't thrilled right now on the damage that single tweet is likely to do to his online reputation among the intelligentsia here.

I don't see him signing with Dallas now. I would think the type of contract Dallas would live with could be signed after the draft. I don't see Allen giving a discount now. It would probably be best for him to wait too if the dollars are not there. I am sure they hope by bringing him in front of teams that one franchise gets a itchy trigger finger.

I look at it this way. It's just a visit.. Does not mean he will sign or even be considered viable to sign by Dallas. For him it shows other teams "see I'm visiting the cowboys and other teams".
In turn it shows the cowboy fan base "see we are entertaining signing big name free agents" whether they really are or not.. It's a solid move on both sides from a business standpoint as they both have their outs.. Allen can claim he dîdnt sign with dallas due to more money and chance at a ring... And Dallas can claim his price or term length wanted is way too high / long .. But it still generates buzz and seems relevant

Right? Because Ben Bass is a role player the team seems to like, so, of course we should make fun of him. That way we look smart later if...wait, how does that make us look smarter again?

I thought we only snarked if we could later crow about how snarky we are. What's the point of snarking regular role-players again when the expectation is only for them to be, you know, role players? Is it just to mock other posters who are hopeful he can develop for us? Because, if so, that's really, really awesome.

dont worry, i'll get better as we get closer to the start of the season because hope springs eternal

as fans we have no choice but to hope that "it all works out" and that is what jerry counts on

a couple of FA signings and draft picks and it will be all sunshine and rainbows

The trip is a brief stop in Allen's schedule as the free-agent defensive end explores where -- and if -- he'll play football in 2014. He visited the Seattle Seahawks over the weekend, and will be in Dallas on Tuesday to talk with the Cowboys, according to a report by ESPN's Ed Werder. Allen has said he wants a fair contract and a chance to win, and said late last season he'd retire before accepting a role as a situational pass-rusher (and presumably a contract that pays him like something less than a full-time player). He reportedly turned down a three-year, $30 million deal from the Denver Broncos after making just over $14 million last season (though the contract structure likely amounted to a one- or two-year deal), and the next week or two could be pivotal for Allen as he decides what he's willing to accept to continue his career.

Can't see him playing here..... Can't really pay him how he wants and we aren't in position to compete for a super bowl.

These guys live in a completely different world. Making nothing or making millions of dollars for a part time role seems like a no brainer to me.

Hope he doesn't sign. What do you want to do Jared? Retire or play football. Is the money the most important thing? Looks like he had a deal with Denver.

This is a pipe dream. I don't see him even thinking about signing here and I think Jerry is wasting this mans time. Why even have him come here? To get the fans fired up? Well guess what you don't sign him and the fans laugh at you. Now Hatch is a Skin slap to your face Ware you didn't even make an attempt to keep him. The more and more I see things happening the more and more I see Jason's fingers all over this. He wanted to get rid of the guys he could not control period.
