True, and a TE coach would be a good place to start imo. The reason I mentioned his hs coaching record is because it shows he can instill a culture. He knows how to win. I think starting him at TE coach and letting him work his way to OC isn't a bad idea. I think at some point, he will make a good NFL OC.
Love Witten, not trying to disrespect the man…but he was a Cowboy virtually his entire career. How are you so sure he knows about winning and/or culture? Certainly wouldn’t have picked those things up from this organization. Effort and toughness? Sure

Campbell was a backup TE. Backup players with limited athletic ability tend to make the best coaches. Witten is a gifted HOF player. They tend to make very poor coaches. Hard pass from me even as TE coach. Let him keep coaching HS

Id be curious to see what he can do.

I mean, he did make it to the division round more than once here. He's lead his team to a good record, which means he can develop a culture. Starting him as a TE coach for a few years could make things interesting. If not us, I'd be curious to see him on Campbell's staff.

That works, but how to start him? I think letting him start as a TE coach and working him up isn't a bad idea. His HS record tells me he can instill a culture. If he can have some time learning from someone from the Campbell tree (since he played with him under Parcells), I think it will be invaluable in developing him into an NFL-level coach. From there, who knows? Imagine if we get our own Campbell?
That's a different story....I thought you meant now. If you want to groom him, go the route Wade took, with his son, Wes. Quality control coach, learn the ins and outs of the entire staff and responsibilities, position coach, coordinator, then HC. Could take a while. Wes isn't a HC yet, but is being considered.

Name me 5 Pro Bowl players in the last 20 years that have made good NFL coaches

I admittedly have only two that are either recent or current head coaches. Technically outside the 20 years for his playing career, but Jim Harbaugh made the pro bowl in 1995 back when that actually mattered. Vrabel has been a good coach and made the pro bowl as a player in 2007 (who I think would make a great HC here). That said, it can be done as far as HCs.

And I probably should have worded it better. The only reason I was thinking potentially now is if Ben Johnson wanted to call plays and became HC. That way, he only has to do what Schotty is doing. Otherwise, id like him in a TE role and develop into a coordinator and eventually a HC. I think he can, at least for TEs to start with, bring a physical presence. I'm wanting a coaching staff that can bring a physical culture.

Maybe, but being shadowed by Jones doesn't sound very intriguing.

Maybe not, and it might be better for him I suppose to learn to start with under Campbell in Detroit. That said, having Vrabel or Johnson here as HC and Witten at TE coach? Now we have some physical coaches, and I think Witten would figure some ideas out. He was a smart player, and I think he'd make a smart coach.

Its incredibly uncommon across all major sports. Gifted athletes struggle to teach fundamentals. Thats why more limited players makes better coaches.

Witten has done nothing besides play with the Cowboys that should make any Cowboys fan want him as a coach

I have zero confidence Jerry Jones wouldn't micromanage the team to death.

Lol, that's probably true. All the more reason it might be better after Ben Johnson gets hired elsewhere to call Campbell and ask if he's got availability on his staff. That's assuming he wants to coach in the NFL of course.

Did Garrett make the pro bowl?
:muttley:

Exactly, good coaches can come from different styles. Given that he's played with Campbell under Parcells. Given that he's clearly done well as a coach in HS. I think he can become a good NFL coach. To just throw it as a bad idea because Jerry mentioned him as a HC is ridiculously short sighted. Personally, I think he might do better to ask Campbell if he's got availability after the season, but I wouldn't mind one bit him starting that journey here.

Oh, and I forgot, Sanders is a champion and is doing solid as a college coach. I think there's a new wave of coaches coming to the NFL.

Its not a bad idea because Jones mentioned it. Its a bad idea because its a bad idea

There is absolutely nothing that says Witten deserves consideration to be an NFL coach. He isnt even coaching in college
