Also, my point. Was that the Claiborne pick was nothing like the Gregory or Jaylon pick. Which is a fact. They weren’t similar in any way shape or form.

Jaylon and Gregory slid to the second round due to major injury and substance use.

Claiborne was a highly regarded prospect that went around where he was expected to be drafted. In the top 10. He wasn’t considered a “gamble” as stated by the OP.

Nothing alike.

The Claiborne pick was not considered a gamble. He was considered as blue chip as they come by all the talking heads.

Here's the thing with the 2nd round gambles. When they're unavailable to contribute immediately, the team loses out on the cheap wage-scale years of their careers.

Say it with me: "accrued seasons".

When 2nd round gambles are not available to contribute immediately, they likely don't get an accrued season their rookie year toward the 4 they need to be free agents.

I think guys who miss their rookie season for injury are almost ideal. You get to teach them up and train them up at the NFL level for a year before they start accruing a season toward free agency.

Both Jaylon and Gregory have only 1 accrued season each.

Wasnt MC a Rob Ryan pick?

I remember a lot of talk about needing another man-corner to pair with Carr at the time.

Rob Ryan had just arrived in Dallas. I doubt Jerry handed over the draft to him. The Mo pick was based on an absurd scouting report. Someone said "best cb since Dieon Sanders" and we all know how much jerry loved Dieon.

The selection of Claiborne was a gamble in so much as they didn't have a sit down interview with him. They didn't bring him into Valley Ranch for a visit, they didn't have a private workout with him, they actually showed their interest from a distance. It's counter to how they have selected in the first round for the last decade. He also was injured at the time he was drafted with a wrist problem that didn't allow him to lift weights prior to camp in 2012.

Where the selection was also an issue was:
  • Claiborne was a press man corner who struggled playing off man and zone.
  • When he was selected, it was a part of a big push by Rob Ryan to upgrade the corners with man coverage guys, including signing Brandon Carr as a FA.
  • Ryan was fired at the end of the season, and replaced by Methuselah, who preferred playing zone defense.
Making a trade up for a guy who was suited for one style of defense, to only change that defense in the span of a year, and to not have privately worked him out or interviewed him is a horribly bad process.

These two and Morris Claiborne are the main reason our defense is just above average and not very good. Not to mention better picks in those 3 spots and maybe we win in 2014 and 2016 against A-Rod. Thanks a lot for being such a gambler, Jerry. I currently have doubts Smith and Gregory are ever going to become anything in the NFL.

Are you sure? Because I could have sworn a week ago we were about to enter the Smith and Gregory era.

I'm still concerned that Jaylon runs this way when the play is going that way. He may look fast doing it, but it's still the opposite direction..........

How do you know?

Go ahead and post insider information that Claiborne wasn’t that highly regarded.

Let me show you how this works little one. I can walk back my claim and say "I don't know what NFL front offices thought of Claiborne."

Here's your dilemma...you made a strident claim to knowledge. Now back it up and provide your evidence.

Go.

Everybody knows he was a highly regarded prospect.

Btw, I don’t have to back up anything. I’m not your personal research assistant. I don’t give two craps what you think.

That’s what I thought.

You equated JoeBlowDraftBlog2000.com “scouting” for actual NFL scouting/evaluation.

“Nick Foles played the greatest two games in NFL history!”

Do you think I can hear you yelling? Do you hear these voices in your head?

Yes, you clearly said this isn't hindsight, and I don't believe you. You seem to think that whatever you say is indisputable. You're wrong.
Why don’t you believe him? Not everyone was on board with the team moving up to take Mo. I wasn’t one of them, because I didn’t mind the move. @kskboys was one who was always against the move. Do you believe he used hindsight too?

I can’t disagree. I think we will start seeing results from them. Jaylon is flying around and IMO is above average LB. BUT, we wasted 2 years letting him rehab. So we get this year and next year to get awesome and then he will want big bucks. Do we get a rehab discount?

Same with Gregory. WTH is going on with his contract. And for all the awesome we saw in that preseason game where was he Sunday? Maybe he did ok but don’t remember hearing his name called. But I was in such shock that I could have missed it.
He is still on contract for three years because if thr suspensions and tike missed.

He was the best corner we had when healthy. He's done a great job in NY as well.

Not for a while. I distinctly remember him being bad for a few years. He made Austin Davis look like a pro bowler up until the game ending interception in 2014. The Rams offensive gameplan seemed to literally be find him and throw his way and they put up 31. He did eventually get better but he lost his starting job at one point. I recall him getting angry with the team even and no one was sympathetic to him because he played so poorly. But he definitely has gotten better as he's stayed healthier.

But it wasn't one scouting report. I'm sure they didn't all say Deion, but the consensus everywhere was that Mo was worth the 6th pick. I think we had him as the 2nd best defender of that draft.

Carr took the hit in the same way. He was also a press man guy for Rob's defense. Then we moved on from Rob and Carr doesn't fit the scheme as well anymore. Such is life when you don't commit to a coach or a philosophy.

My recollection on KSK for MO as well.

I didn't see Mo as a top 10 pick at all. Entirely lacked the measurables. And I'm not impressed with a guy on a great defense getting INTs in college. Earliest in the 20s. But all the supposed professionals were all hepped up on Mo, so I shrugged and figured the pros must know what they're doing. I don't do that so much anymore.

I think the herd just patterned matched Mo to Patrick Peterson the year before. Top CB, same team, the following year. Must be the same, right?

I think he lost his job after that Rams game even with his game ending interception. He didn’t play well until his final 2 years but we still had the injuries to deal with.
