First let me say that the backup QB isn't really the problem. But that's another discussion for another time. But all I am pointing out is that the Jones' came out and made finding a backup QB so they wouldn't have to go into 2016 in a similar situation to 2015. They said that when Moore was already on the roster. If Moore was the planned backup all along, why come out and say you need to upgrade the backup QB spot? That's like saying you have a Honda Accord but now it's time for a new car. Then three months later you say your solution to your new car dilemma is.............. the exact Honda Accord you already owned. I think what clearly happened is that they wanted to upgrade with a veteran but guys like McCoy and others were just too pricey for them.

Secondly, it's hard to really say the pass rush is improved when Hardy is gone and he's essentially replaced by a 4th round rookie and a cast off from Oakland. The Cowboys don't need to just get a bit better at getting to the QB............ they have to get a crap ton better to be a competent pass rushing team. I don't see the improvement right now and if Gregory turns out to be a dud, I think the Cowboys will once again find themselves near the bottom of the league in sacks and QB pressures.

We have a huge need at DT/DE and won't sign the one guy that could help at the right price.

They won't participate in FA because they want to build with the draft but the draft is 95% out of their control.

We wanted Goff, Wentz, Lynch, Cook, Bosa, Dodd, Ogbah but so did everyone else. Tapper might help in a couple years but he might not. Same with Dak.

Might have taken a flier on Mario Williams. He signed a very team friendly contract with the Dolphins that allows them to get out of the deal after one year with minimal pain and would not have precluded us from being able to sign some guys like Martin and Frederick long term. He's making a manageable $6.5MM this year and if you cut him after this year, you'd only have $2MM in dead money next year. I know the horror stories of him quitting last year in Buffalo but a lot of guys did up there. Buffalo was a mess. He had a fairly pitiful year last year but prior to that, had 3 straight years of double digit sacks.

Robert Ayers is another I would have looked at. I don't think he has the potential Williams has but would have been an upgrade. His contract is also fairly team friendly and again would not have precluded Dallas from being able to sign some of their current players. $7.5MM cap hit this year and you can cut him right after the season for no dead money.

Two guys that I think would have upgraded our DE spot quite a bit and both signed for contracts that wouldn't crush you like say a Olivier Vernon contract might.

My offseason would have been resign Claiborne, cut Carr, sign Leon Hall to a small deal. He's my slot guy, Scandrick and Claiborne outside. Williams or Ayers at DE opposite Lawrence. Thornton was a smart signing. I think those three moves would have upgraded the D. Sprinkle in Collins and Tapper and now I think you have something.

i meant backup qb.

When your a Cowboys fan and trying to determine how many games they need to win during that stretch when Romo is injured to stay in playoff contention until he comes back..

I don't think it matters who they signed. Garrett can only succeed with Romo.

My only point is that people can't start calling Moore the answer as a backup and say the Cowboys took care of that situation this offseason when just two months ago it seemed pretty clear they thought they needed to upgrade the QB spot with someone not on this roster.

so no answer just *someone* had to come externally.

somehow.

Jerry has no reason to declare that he will IR Smith in May. Check back in October.

So they're declaring our QB2 before training camp? So much for competition.

I'm just kidding, though. I don't believe a word that comes out Jerry's mouth.

Well you have to have a depth chart and right now Moore is the backup. If Dak wins 2nd then he becomes the backup but it's crazy to expect Dak just to jump to number 2.

Training camp is where the battles will play out

Of course he'd say Moore is the backup. Prescott's not even been handed a playbook yet. That'll change at some point. Prescott or a veteran.

Kellen is a smart guy, and has had a year learning the offense.
He now has what 4 games experience, which I think will help him this offseason, as now he knows
where he needs to improve and what it is like in a nfl game.

Those starts could really be a big help.
Now he gets more reps, and learns even more. so he is by far the best choice at this point.

Dak has a lot to learn with the playbook, and has no NFL game experience.

So you are saying there isn't one QB in the world that the Cowboys could have signed, drafted or traded for in the last 3-4 years that would be an improvement over KMoore.

Well that settled that......

What benefit is there to lie and say that they need to fix the backup QB spot (and pass rush) and not really mean it?

You guys can try to spin it anyway you want to but the reality is the Cowboys wanted to upgrade the QB spot, couldn't find anyone in their price range and now have deemed Moore the backup. If Moore was the guy all along, it makes no sense to come out 2 months ago and claim that finding a backup QB is one of their top priorities.

There really wasn't many options out there unless people wanted Roberr or Johnny Football or Chase DAniel.

Actually I think they may have stated backup QB was a priority. ??Stephen and Dad.

No. They criticized the backup quarterback quality of play, and called it inexcusable, but at no point said that finding a backup QB was a top priority.

Every presser, every interview - BPA.

Jerry Jones: Finding a QB a 'high priority'
Dec 29, 2015

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys have many needs for 2016, but owner and general manager Jerry Jones reiterated finding a quarterback is at the top of the list.

Backups Brandon Weeden, Matt Cassel and Kellen Moore have combined to go 1-10 this season after starter Tony Romo suffered a broken left collarbone twice this season. Jones has acknowledged the front office handled the backup spot entering the season poorly.

“We’re going to try to all the ways – all ways – to come up with a way to get Tony a backup, while at the same time looking toward the future,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday. “Some people would say that’s dreaming. Everybody wants that, but we have a high draft pick, obviously. We're earned it, and we've got it. If we evaluate and get an opportunity to get a couple of players there, we got to look at it hard.”

Jones said he had a conversation with Romo about the future of the position on Saturday night in Buffalo. He has said he believes Romo, who turns 36 in April, has a 3-5 year window left at playing at a high level.

The Cowboys have not drafted a quarterback since 2009 (Stephen McGee, fourth round) and have not selected a quarterback in the first round since Troy Aikman in 1989. They took Steve Walsh with a first-round pick in the 1989 compensatory draft as well.

It’s possible the Cowboys could take a quarterback early in the draft as well as look in free agency for a veteran backup.

“It’s obviously going to be a high priority for us, the backup situation, as it relates to not only being able to come in and do better than we did this year, but whatever way, whatever we do, do better, but we’re looking to our future,” Jones said. “That’s as big a thing for me.”

I can't see Smith playing in 2016. He's going to miss OTA's, training camp and preseason and will still be rehabbing into the season. Jerry said that maybe later in the season if the Cowboys make the playoffs he'll be ready which is ridiculous if he hasn't been practicing or playing. You can't just throw a rookie out there the last couple of games of the season who's had little practice time against players who've been playing all season and expect them to play well or be ready for a playoff game if the Cowboys make it that far. That would be tough for a veteran player to look good much less a rookie who's work has centered mostly around rehabbing.

LB Mark Nzeocha was on the nfi list last year and was activated late in the season.
