Seriously?

Yeah. Seriously. They didn't bring in a backup QB and instead are going with someone in house that they had under contract when they made the comment that they need to improve the backup QB spot.

And they've done well at DT this offseason with Thornton and Collins in the draft. But they haven't brought in anyone at DE who will definitely upgrade the pass rush. I like Tapper a lot but rookie DEs often don't make big impacts and the other guy they brought in, Mayowa, is a total project.

I think the Cowboys did what they could with the money they had. It looks very optimistic to me and I have faith Moore will be a more than adequate backup as Dak comes in and learns behind Moore and Romo. Just because the boys didn't drop a ton of cash on a FA DE doesn't it hasn't been improved.

You're just the kind of consumer Jerry Jones needs.

You know nothing about Mayowa other than his stat line.

First let me say that the backup QB isn't really the problem. But that's another discussion for another time. But all I am pointing out is that the Jones' came out and made finding a backup QB so they wouldn't have to go into 2016 in a similar situation to 2015. They said that when Moore was already on the roster. If Moore was the planned backup all along, why come out and say you need to upgrade the backup QB spot? That's like saying you have a Honda Accord but now it's time for a new car. Then three months later you say your solution to your new car dilemma is.............. the exact Honda Accord you already owned. I think what clearly happened is that they wanted to upgrade with a veteran but guys like McCoy and others were just too pricey for them.

Secondly, it's hard to really say the pass rush is improved when Hardy is gone and he's essentially replaced by a 4th round rookie and a cast off from Oakland. The Cowboys don't need to just get a bit better at getting to the QB............ they have to get a crap ton better to be a competent pass rushing team. I don't see the improvement right now and if Gregory turns out to be a dud, I think the Cowboys will once again find themselves near the bottom of the league in sacks and QB pressures.

So you deny that he's a project?

Here's what I know. He's a somewhat undersized DE who has shown some flashes of athleticism but that's never translated to extensive PT and production on the field. He was a little recruited high school kid who played for a small school program and went undrafted and was picked up by Seattle. Played one year there (2 games) and then was cut.

Signed by Oakland, played limited time there, and then was signed by Dallas.

The guy is the very definition of a project. That doesn't mean he can't end up being serviceable or good for us. But if the thinking is, "Ben Mayowa solves our pass rush problems", that's probably a stretch at this point to think that.

I'll add it is ridiculous to say he will be back for playoffs on so many levels. Remember when Lawrence missed all of training camp and some of the season - he did nothing year 1. Same thing here and it might be 2 years.

All we need is Romo's kiss of death " we will win the super bowl " non-sense.

Prediction: Cowboys versus Philly in final week for win and in and Eagles win. I've just saved all of you 8 months of time,

Obviously Moore would be the backup as of today but that could change once camp and preseason starts. He's 0-2 as a starter and neither game was close. Certainly can't feel good about him as the backup hopefully we can pick up a veteran.

so who would you have brought in and given the $ to?

Might have taken a flier on Mario Williams. He signed a very team friendly contract with the Dolphins that allows them to get out of the deal after one year with minimal pain and would not have precluded us from being able to sign some guys like Martin and Frederick long term. He's making a manageable $6.5MM this year and if you cut him after this year, you'd only have $2MM in dead money next year. I know the horror stories of him quitting last year in Buffalo but a lot of guys did up there. Buffalo was a mess. He had a fairly pitiful year last year but prior to that, had 3 straight years of double digit sacks.

Robert Ayers is another I would have looked at. I don't think he has the potential Williams has but would have been an upgrade. His contract is also fairly team friendly and again would not have precluded Dallas from being able to sign some of their current players. $7.5MM cap hit this year and you can cut him right after the season for no dead money.

Two guys that I think would have upgraded our DE spot quite a bit and both signed for contracts that wouldn't crush you like say a Olivier Vernon contract might.

My offseason would have been resign Claiborne, cut Carr, sign Leon Hall to a small deal. He's my slot guy, Scandrick and Claiborne outside. Williams or Ayers at DE opposite Lawrence. Thornton was a smart signing. I think those three moves would have upgraded the D. Sprinkle in Collins and Tapper and now I think you have something.

Two top priorities were find a backup QB and fix the pass rush.

We may have done neither this offseason. LOL.

That may have been the conventional wisdom but I think the draft shows us that the top two priorities were 1-sell jerseys and 2-find a starting LBer for 2017. I'd say they did a pretty good job.
