I doubt Jerry is intimidated by good coaches. Jerry has poor judgement in evaluating people.

While Jerry has a few of these traits, I don’t think he’s a full blown narcissist. Despite all his stubbornness and arrogance, he is a kind person at times, especially with his family. He’s a terrible football executive, but he’s not a complete jerk.

I see Jerry’s biggest problem as actually his insecurities- especially with football people that have lots of respect and accomplishments. For whatever reason, Jerry doesn’t act like most secure, wise leaders who surround themselves with talented people. On the other hand, he likes having people who are less accomplished in his employ, probably to help him feel better about his insecurities. I’m certainly no expert in this area, so I could be all wrong, Lol!
People who routinely consider anyone they believe are 'normal' are often the first to be surprised that someone can be, in fact, 'abnormal'.

i dont know I think a coach like Payton could make it work. He is pretty even keeled like JG but I think he has the balls to give it to Jerry behind closed doors. The issue really is Stephen, he seems to wield some power and he has proven he is just as bad if not worse than Jerry, and I do not think he would get along with a guy like Payton.

No coach can ever overcome jeri and his psychotic need to be dead center of all things cowboys

and he's set up the next generation to do the same:

They're likely to double down on his approach because changing would be an insult to their father.

Can you imagine the questions they'd have to field if they hired a GM after Jeri's was 6 feet under and the Cowboys won a Super Bowl in 3-5 years of the new GM taking over football operations?

Everyone would be shouting from the heavens: "See, I told you so, look how wrong Jerry was to not have hired a GM from the get go"

we're so screwed
There is so much nepotism and dysfunction in this picture....you could make a college psychology class activity out of this, lol.

It’s really very simple. Jerry bought his way into fulfilling his passion in running a football team and the celebrity status attached.

The revenue streams were put in place to secure his investment so his franchise wouldn’t suffer if he wasn’t able to have success on the field so he could continue his passion.

And there are many other owners with the same advantages but the winning owners dont mk football descisions. They hire football experts. Over 20 years into the salary cap era, it has been proven that it takes a great organization (top to bottom) to win and I mean championships. Dysfunctional oganizations need not apply because they have no chance of winning. Commanders, Cowboys, Browns, Bungals, Dolphins, Bills, etc have dysfunction running thru their organizations and have not won a divisional playoff game in over two decades. But the great organizations remain relevant and are frequently in the mix when discussing deep playoff runs. Our owner puts the 'D' in dysfunction like few other owners. Nepotism is the order of the day and reigns supreme. Elite organizations get credentialled, top football minds while we get a playboy and his son, both too busy to watch game film, yet with the free time to dedicate to booking the next boxing match, concert, or corporate sponsor. While the elite football minds of elite NFL work 18 hour days to make their team a winner, the Jones boys are out boozing it up, chasing tail, and beating their chests about three championships won almost 25 years ago.

This makes so much sense. And yet no one at the Star would ever admit it’s true.

Still not a guarantee, but if this team finishes as poorly as they have been playing lately, say 6-10 or 5-11, Jerry probably can’t justify keeping his personal Tom Landry anymore, despite wanting to.

But...IF Jerry has to hire a new HC, based on his history and a weird psychosis about not having a HC that can outshine him, don’t expect some big name guy to be named.

Because for some strange reason, Jerry is intimidated by real football people who have had major success. Rather than hiring a HC that gives HIS TEAM the best chance to WIN, he wants to hire someone that gives him the best chance to feel good about himself.

I’m sure someone with some expertise in psychology could write a book on why this billionaire is so insecure and even petty about his credentials. So bottom line....if Garrett gets fired, don’t expect some big name coach with a history of NFL success as a head coach to be hired. And I wouldn’t expect an up and coming young star college coach like Lincoln Riley either. It will probably be another mid-level NFL Asst Coach few have ever heard of.

Too much star power makes Jerry uncomfortable and intimidated. And by now, we should all know his personal comfort has top priority over winning.
Yep. Jerrah wants all the credit. Even it if means his team has sucked since 1996.

I hope Stephen can talk some sense into him. I’m not a big Stephen fan, but I don’t think he is as insecure as Jerry. He may be willing to go out and get the best coach available regardless of who gets the credit.

Our only ray of hope is time itself. Jerry doesn't have much left. One would think he realizes this and understands change must occur for him to see success before his life expires. If not, than it's really his own damn fault.

The question here is will anything change once he passes away? It was mentioned earlier in the thread briefly, but, you do have to wonder how far the apple fell from the tree. Could Steven right this ship?

It's has been as much or more about Jerry not enjoying the day to day operations when Parcells was here as it is was about Parcells getting too much attention. Jerry has said multiple times that it was a "walking on eggshells" feeling on a day to day basis when Parcells was here.

Now that Jerry has backed off day to day stuff and Stephen is running the football operations, I don't think it would be as big of an issue for Jerry.

IMO, Stephen will pick the next Head Coach. The issue is that Stephen is tight with money and Garrett/Marinelli/Linehan all have another year on their contracts. It might be tolerable to him to dump them with 1 year remaining, but he was not going to do it this off-season when they all had two years remaining.

I do get a strong sense that Stephen is tired of Garrett. Stephen basically told Garrett back in March to stay out of the offense because they were giving Linehan full control.

Summary: If Stephen wants to fire Garrett it will happen.
Jerry has veto power, but Stephen generally gets what he wants as of the past few years.

I really wish someone would ask Jerry publicly why he is intimidated by accomplished football people. Might create some “reverse psychology” and make him hire someone legit, lol.

Doubt it, smh.

Tim MacMahon had the cojones to ask jeri hard questions and now he's covering the Mavericks.

I wonder what who caused that??

look at how pissed jeri is at Tim's question:

I think Jerry has 20 years left, I really do. He will get the best of medical care and could easily live to be in his mid 90s. He lost his mind 15 years ago and that hasn't stopped him from being the architect of the all-special teams draft, drafting a cold weather specialist kicker, trying to turn baseball pitchers into QBs, insisting his 2 billion dollar stajum end zones face east-west to ensure glare in players faces, and he even invited that hack George Strait to bring his half-baked brand of formula-based country to the stajum.

So which coach would like to ruin their future as an nfl head coach by coming to Dallas to work under Jerry?

Don’t kid yourself… They are out there. The idea of it being the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys is intoxicating. Who would’ve ever thought Bill Parcells would agree to come here? Yet, it happened.
