This is just like watching the Raiders slide into a 3rd tier franchise.

Same thing here, the Rise and Fall of the Dallas Cowboys. Greed, vanity and Pride turning the Empire into dust.

  1. People are figuratively jumping off bridges over this story.
  2. Those that try to temper it are quickly dismissed or "corrected."
  3. Some question the context, but in reality the topic doesn't even include a quote to take out of context.
  4. The team gave UFA Doug Free a huge market contract 3 years ago, spent a 1st, 4th & 7th on the O-line two years ago, and signed two 2nd tier FA's last year.
  5. To this point there are NOT commensurate results, but its not like resources haven't been spent. It looks more like resources mis-spent at this point.
  6. BTW - few have been able to predict in recent years where the team will go in the offseason from stories like these. Is this story any different?
  7. also BTW - many were certain from earlier offseason stories that Gruden was all but signed, Garrett gone and/or his playcalling stripped. None of that looks likely today. And its pretty hard to deny the coaching staff is stronger today than at season's end.

I agree. I'm waiting for the audio or a transcript of an actual quote. Can't say I'd be shocked, though, no matter what turns up.

I'm dubious about it, though. Eatman does a good job most of the time, and he makes not even a whiff of mention of what'd obviously be a fairly juicy tidbit if it actually happened.

Draft resources are one of the lowest in the NFL, if not the lowest over the last few years. Considering the product on the field, this should come as no surprise. It is nobreason for fans to get upset. This is what Jerry does.

What do you call the past 17 years then?

You haven't enjoyed any of the seasons the past 17 years? Really? This always surprises me. Personally, I thought 2007 was great. 2009, too. In it's own way, 2003 was pretty exciting. And I've really enjoyed each of the last two seasons, if not for all the fan-complaining along the way. And I think the prospects for 2013 are pretty decent.

Admittedly, that's not all that much to go on over almost two decades, but it's not exactly 17 years of futility.

Line improvements could come from within

INDIANAPOLIS – As a former offensive lineman, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones knows the offensive line has to play better in 2013 for his team to win more games.

Where the improvement comes from is up for debate.

On Saturday Jones mentioned the possibility of getting better through free agency and the draft along the line but he was not ready to dismiss in-house improvement either.

“We do need to have improvement there, but I think we can get that offensive line with some of the stuff we’re going to do with our offense and coaching,” Jones said. “I think we can get that offensive line with a better report card here this time next year.”

Left tackle Tyron Smith is Jones’ only sure bet, but he liked what he saw at the end of the year from Doug Free and Jermey Parnell. Jones acknowledged the Cowboys “need more,” from free-agent pickups Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau in 2013, and he could see center Phil Costa as the starter “for several years.”

He also touted the futures of Kevin Kowalski and Ronald Leary.

Gosh, you mean Jerry didn't say he was happy with the offensive line?

It depends on context. Although from most of what I've seen and read frmo NFL Network and NFL.com, they are not fishing for stuff that isn't there just to get Cowboys hooplah. But, I've seen too many times where Jerry or Tony or Garrett says one thing and it magically gets badly misinterpreted by a reporter and it's treated like the gospel. I can think of two particular Romo instances where this happened. Like the one this year where a Baltimore reporter claimed that Romo didn't like his questions and hung up on him...when in reality the phone just disconnected. Or the time that a reporter from ESPN (can't remember which one) complained that Romo was being a prima donna by not doing the weekly conference call when in reality it was during a bye week.

Part of me thinks that Jerry is thinking like Stephen Jones is thinking with our big priority being safety. I know people hate to hear it, but it is. The offense moved the ball and scored pretty good last year. It wasn't pretty, but it's true. We couldn't stop the pass and this year it was the safeties causing a massive problem as we had the worst safeties in the league. And our safeties will be Barry Church and Matt Johnson, neither of whom have proven a thing in this league.

But, with that said...IF this is Jerry's thinking and IF this was not taken out of context; it's a real sad state for the Cowboys. We need to realize that Romo has his limitations. He can't consistently win shoot-outs. He can't consistently win without a running game. There's nothing wrong with that as there are 28 other teams like that as well. And quite frankly, I don't think he deserves to get his arse kicked every season because the O-Line can't get the job done.

Wuite a bit of the offensive stats came during garbage time and red zone scoring is just plain bad and has been for years. Day in, day out, this offense can't be depended on.

. “I think we’ve got a chance to have a plus from a couple of these young guys, and we’re very likely, through a combination of free agency or this draft to get serious about another guard-center type there.”

So, there's at least part of the quote. Sounds to me like they're thinking about retaining Free (surprises me) and adding an interior OL in the draft or veteran FA.

“A player could get us in better shape than a player ought to relative to what our offensive line is right here,” Jones said. “But again Bill Callahan, I agree with him when he saw more positive and on the come as the year went on as he instituted his coaching. It did make a change and he did do it differently. There was an adjustment.”

I have no idea what the hell that was supposed to mean. Something good about Callahan, I guess, and then I don't know what.

One very important bit of information in that article was that JJ said we are looking for a other OG/OC type in FA or the draft. He definitely didn't rule out FA.

In the Draft we have several guys who fill that role.

He's sad because he shares a view of HIS team, different then yours? Who's to say he won't go ahead and go full O-line/D-line mode come draft and FA? Don'e even say anything about the past.

Jump the gun much?

Yeah, Jerry is so sad ..... A guy who can probably buy your salary 40x times.

Sad because people like you swallow this stuff year after year, but by all means, wear your Jerry badge proudly.:lmao:

I really like the idea or getting an OG/OC type.

As for Free, wouldn't it be cheaper to replace him with someone at least as adequate?

He has short changed the offense line since he took over from Jimmy, not too shocking to hear him say it.

FootballOutsiders.com have stats that account for 'garbage time' scoring and 'red zone scoring.' And we still ranked 11th in offensive efficiency.

We were 23rd in defensive efficiency. In particular, 25th in passing defensive efficiency. We were dead last in defending TE's and only had 7 INT's.

We simply cannot progress as a team if the pass defense cannot stop a nose bleed and cannot get the ball back. We could have the greatest O-Line in the NFL and it will still be a problem. See the Chiefs during the Vermeil era. Awesome O-Line, awesome offense, couldn't stop anybody on defense and it killed them in the end.
