I don’t know about the smokescreen part, but..

Every single Cowboys beat writer and “insider” stated yesterday during the Live Draft feeds that LaPorta is their top TE. Other than the media (who just guesses) and your own bias, where did you get Kincaid was “our guy”? Kincaid wasn’t even the consensus TE. I’ve seen all four TEs mocked to Dallas.

If you don’t like Mazi as the pick, fine. But let’s not act like it was a bad pick. Dal biggest prob last year was stopping the run.. so Dal drafted the top run defender in the draft! Hard to be upset ab that.
I never said a word about Mazi. I don’t mind the pick. I said for months Dallas wanted a receiving weapon at TE. I said Kincaid and Musgrave were their guys. I never wavered. They wanted Kincaid and got sniped by buffalo. It happens. That’s all I said.

Dan Quinn basically told Parsons Smith was going to be the pick before the draft via text message
BINGO. That was at 3:30. THEN right after that, the false Laporta to Dallas at 26 rumor was floated by someone in the building at the star. It was brilliant actually. Mazi was always their guy. They just didnt want a team to jump them and get him. So they created this Te ruse.

I've seen him in the mid to low 30s throughout the draft. He was 35 on Tankathon, the next best was Benton at 58. He was the 5th DT on the board, and all 5 didn't get out of the 1st round. If they wanted him, it would have been risky even if they just traded back with KC. Benton might not have been there at 58.
I get it. It just appears to me that since we didn’t get who we wanted in 1st round we made sure we didnt lose who we wanted in 2nd round. Is that fair criticism?

Honestly, there are really only about 10-15 players each year that truly have traditional “first round talent”. Conversely, the number of players who are top end 2nd-3rd round talent is much bigger. Drafting at 18-32 is basically a high end second round pick most years.

The draft is hugely important to team development. But man the modern NFL draft is one of the most over-hyped events in sports. More than half of the players drafted each year will play in the NFL LESS than 5 years. Finding a 10 year starter in the draft is about 15-17% chance.

So the overreaction to the draft- either saying we “picked wrong” or got it exactly right is really silly. None of us know what these players are until at least 2-3 years.

Agreed. I think that there are a lot of assumptions made. Honestly, I think that the media tried to make it more of a story line than anything else. Remember when Dallas was drafting Johnny Manzel? Watch out!! Buffalo traded and just snaked the TE away from Dallas. Obviously, I don't know what Buffalo needed in the draft, but maybe it was a TE and they were really thinking Dallas was going to take the TE.
exactly. It was never a case where we were drafting a TE early. But the Bills didnt know that.

MAYBE but a big maybe. He was rated neck and neck with Carter who philly drafted earlier. We targeted him all along and the value at 26 was too great to pass on.
I don’t recall targeting him as our 1st round pick. But I’m open to any info that reveals that. I didn’t see all of the Mocks .

It’s a solid pick and glad we picked up a DT. I just think it’s worthy of speculation if we might could have traded down for more value.

Instead of appearing a lazy pick ensuring we got someone on our board possibly earlier than needed.

Why wouldn't a teams draft board who has been composed by a bunch scouts paid to research these players be more valid than a bunch media puns paid to talk?

there isnt any info because at the post draft presser last night they told us he was their draft target all along. They kept it hush hush all that time. Micah and DQ revealed it earlier kinda around 3:30. So internally within the inner circle they all knew.

This is what I think. Had Buffalo drafted Meyer instead, then that's the guy we wanted. We weren't drafting a TE in the first. Just like 30 other teams. I think the Cowboys are less likely to pick TE in the first than RB.

I think they were looking DT the entire time, I just don't know how far back they would have reached.

I didn't think they were picking CB or WR in the first round because they addressed that in the offseason. No OL because we have plenty, and we picked one last year. We have Edge rushers, everything points to DL.

My prediction was Lukas Vann Ness, but he was off the board.

That might be a fair assessment and would align with my thoughts in that we wanted Mazi regardless if we had to stretch with our 58th pick at 26.
