Really, because I always figured GMs were judged on bringing in talent. Now I will agree that his choices in coaching so far are specious but I am holding out hope that he is trying to bring in someone else and simply not going to hamstring WP if he fails to do so.

I still find it odd that he can go into the lockerroom and take the team to task as well as force the HC to take away duties from his DC and ST coach and not be looking elsewhere.

The only rationale I can see for that is Garrett and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

but Jerry doesn't just draft and sign players

if I said just one, would it really matter?

what if Jerry hits on his one GM choice and we go on a run? what if every GM choice he makes, turns into gold?

and it's not just hiring a GM, Jerry has to step back completely
So we risk it all on a what if?

What if we end up with the 2nd coming of Matt Millen? Just roast him and try again.

These are great plans.

If this thread is any indication, then we're in SERIOUS trouble both as a franchise, & as a fanbase.

I can't understand how any knowledgeable Cowboys fan can still find ways to defend JJ.
It's mind-boggling.

I don't have all the answers but why don't we start by having JJ become OWNER of the team, & hire football people, to run his football operation!
In a few years we'll be in the same exact position as the Raiders, with our Texas version of Al Davis!

In Oakland, loyal fans supported Davis until it became increasing clear that he was part of the problem, & not part of the solution!

Jerruh needs to walk away.
Overly involved ownership DOESN"T work, whether its Steinbrenner, Davis, or that midget with the deadskins!

Stop enabling Jerruh- it only gives him encouragement!:bang2:

millen has had the same success as Jerry the last 13 years = no playoff wins

we got a lot of star players and ticket sellers but not 1 playoff win

So your argument is we should never ever replace a GM, or coach, or scout, or player for that matter, because that person may fail too and then we would just have to hire another one.

Do you even believe this or just trying to stir the pot here?
No, that isn't my argument.

I'm saying those squawking about Jerry the owner would have fired Jerry the GM for the last 12 years don't have a sure fire solution either.

If I disagree with the anti-Jerry faction it means I'm stirring the pot? Well, then hand me a spoon.

What people fail to realize is that the only option if Jerry steps down is Stephen. I am actually surprised I have yet to see one thread stating that its time to see what Stephen can do and for Jerry to step down.

All indications are that Stephen is solid on personnel and a cap guru as well as more down to earth and level headed than his father.

Its actually a plan that I wouldn't hate.

Youre right though. This change at all costs mentality is dumb.

13 years without a playoff win

who wants to risk leaving all that?

automatically assuming that Jerry would fail in his GM search isn't a strong indication of your confidence level in him

Jimmy would have left anyway. The final say was the main source of contention.

Jimmy's insolence and Jerry's ego were the main sources of contention

regarding Jimmy and Jerry, those early years of the team was when Jerry was very hands off and all the personnel decisions largely rested with Jimmy, who was signed, who was drafted, the Hershel Walker trade, who was cut, etc.

the only time Jerry felt he needed to have his handprints on the day-to-day operations of the team, not the franchise, was when he felt that Jimmy was too insolent, and that he didn't receive the credit that he felt he deserved as owner

He even made Jimmy pretend like he was consulting with him in the war room for the draft day camera too. What's funny is by naming himself GM and saying he had final say, it was just so he could take credit for the success. He was even quoted as saying there was only once or twice that he overrode Jimmy's decisions. That's in five years time he rubberstamped all of the moves Jimmy made but two.

Yet he's a GM with 3 rings. It's good to be able to give yourself a title and ride on someone else's coattails.

I have a hard time believing that if Jerry wasn't the owner and was just a GM he would still be employed here after the past 13 years. I sincerely believe almost no GM could have survived the utter disastrous ending of this season and the way it is being handled internally, including keeping what everyone knows is a lame duck coach for one more year.

Yeah, but JJ hired BP to get that playoff victory, who all expected to do so, but he didn't do that either in two tries. JJ was a terrible GM, but I think he has gotten much better. Everyone knows he's not dumb, and he obviously learned some things from BP to get better.

I just think that we are grasping at straws as to what is the problem on this team. I think most people agree that there is a lack of discipline and accountability, but these are also the players that BP supposedly drafted and couldn't instill in them those things. We just went 13-3 last year, where everyone thought things were great sans December, but then collapsed this year even though the talent on the team has supposedly increased.

I just think the whole situation with the 'Boys is not rational right now. Too many grasping at straws.

Bravo. But don't hold your breath. They're all for playing musical chairs with head coaches but not the GM. Never the GM. Curious, no? How I envy Giants fans with Jerry Reese at the helm.
I didn't say never the GM. That's your hollow strawman claim.

Jimmy Johnson earned him 2 of those rings

the GM Jerry of today wasn't created until after we won our 2nd Super Bowl, when Jimmy Johnson snubbed Jerry at a party
Next time when I predict something in a thread I will make it bold red and font 4.

Thank you for making me look like a prophet.

No kidding. Jerry had final say on all personnel matters since day 1. That includes the Johnson years and the drafts.

Final say and THE SAY are two different things. As he was quoted a few years back, there were only two times he overrode Jimmy's decisions in the five years they worked together.

Throw a ton of cash at Scott Pioli.

What's your solution, wait another 14 years to see if Jerry ever gets it? That sounds pretty sure fire too.

Jimmy AND Jerry won those rings and EARNED those rings.

I don't think they would have gotten those rings without each other.

So I have never taken that away from Jerry.

However would we keep a GM that won superbowls over a decade ago, if he has not fielded a team that has won one playoff game in over a decade?

I don't think so.

I think hos is playing a little devils advocate and I have no problem with that as I do that quite a bit myself.

Jerry has learned over the years and has grown since bill was here, but he is also a part of the problem with this team.

I don't think any team would keep a GM who had them shell out the signing bonuses he has over the last 4 years alone without coming away with a playoff victory.
Actually, I'm not. I just have the audacity to disagree with the masses calling for something that has no chance of happening.

You know, Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing over and over and over again, and expecting the results to change.

"Knowledgeable input" and "rubberstamping Jimmy's decisions" are two different things. Jerry brought money and Jimmy brought an eye for talent. But Jerry wasn't a personnel guru anymore than Jimmy was a businessman. They needed each other, but performed distinctly different roles. Try to remember that.

Funny you mention that, since Jerry keeps doing the same old thing and here we are hoping for something different than another year added to the last 13 where we end up with no playoff win.

you should read "Boys Will Be Boys"

Jerry's reaction to Jimmy always snubbing him was hilarious, it was like Al Gore in South Park, "why doesn't he listen to me!"

I didn't say the main contributor. Unlike some I don't put all praise or blame in one basket and hop around saying "I have eggs, I have eggs." I leave that to the kids at Easter and wait until the wife makes deviled eggs from them.
