Jerry Jones to SAS on why the team did not go after Derrick Henry

I think that was more of his doing than anyone else’s. He could’ve signed a cheaper deal elsewhere but it made more sense to go to the Pats who he only had to outperform Stevenson in order to get playing time.

It’s like Gillmore. He just signed but I don’t think that means no one wanted him.
gilmore got paid like 10 mil. he was holding out for the right fit and money and had said so all along. zeke not so much. imo.

I wasn't a fan of drafting him, wasn't a fan of his antics, then wasn't a fan of him holding out when he did after "all that jerry had done for him" and then he fell off a cliff. just a culmination of things. ultimately i'm a fan of the team. i do have more love for certain players, but mostly it's what have you done for me lately. if he comes in and contributes then i'll once again be a fan.
Yeah I mean we all are fans our own way. Witten fell off but will always be a fan. Same goes for Zeke. I hold Zeke high in that regard.

i respect that, and i don't knock anyone for who they are a fan of and why. alot of fandom is irrational and/or emotional. romo is my favorite player of all time lol

I think Zeke was doing the same. He held out for the best situation and money. Didn’t he get 4.5 million? Not entirely the same but similar.

If there were a way to find out, I’d bet that played a role in Jerry’s thinking. The Cowboys should have signed Elliott and Henry. Neither were mammoth deals like Philly and SF are paying a running back.
Jerry really doesn't like to pay people who aren't working for him anymore. It's the reason why Garrett stuck around so long, and it's the same reason that McCarthy is a lame duck. It's odd for a billionaire with the highest valued sports team in the world to be so stingy, but that's the way he is. Once you understand this mentality, then it all makes sense.

You already made the decision Zeke will suck. That is what I was referring to.

If the oline is "much improved" as some say, Zeke will be more effective than you give him credit for and Jerry's decision to "be friends" won't look quite as bad as you say.
Zeke doesn't have the burst anymore to hit the holes.....nor does he have the speed in the open field, sub 4.0 ypc since 2019, and how many 20 plus yard runs has he had since 2019? He's a declining player, period, end of story!

The fact that Zeke couldn't get a job but for training camp last year in New England, he'd be out of the league today, but for Jerry wanting his buddy back on the team occupying valuable roster spot tells you everything about this franchise

Mr. Henry will get his chance to destroy this team in a few weeks.
Sad thing is some fans will be happy about it and that they will get to say, I told you so....at least they'll be happy about something.

Any personnel decision made by any GM's on signing a player because they are "friends", or want to "be friends", is wrong no matter the outcome.

The simple fact that I only see this type of decision being made by one GM should more than show that.

I will be rooting for Zeke and hope he succeeds, but it still doesn't change the fact that you (GM) should never let personal feelings affect the decision on who to sign or not (clearly there are off the field exceptions). Just as much as signing a player because he wanted to play for your team shouldn't either.

lets see...In 2023 we cut Zeke and he was not good enough or a good fit. NOW a year later is deemed just as good as Derrick Henry? Holy HELL...someone needs a Dunce cap and put into the corner. Jerry has lost what was left of his mind.

I am SURE...a LOT of owners/GMs have their pets, faves, friends. They just avoid the drama spotlight about it.

I didn't get that sense at all. In fact...I think Jerry worked AROUND that as best as he could.

That was total BS from Jerry. He didn’t go after Henry because of money. He went with a much cheaper back in Zeke. Jerry also said during the interview that he feels better about this team than he did last years team. He says that every year.
