If you look at it from a cap stand point, keeping Zeke is not the worst thing in the world if he takes a significant pay cut down to approximately $6 million.
That is because releasing Zeke counts $6 million on the cap in dead money, so if you can get Zeke to take a pay cut down to $6 million, its like having Zeke for "free" this year.
Zeke is still a very good short yardage RB, he is also one of the best pass blocking RBs in the entire league, always has been and still is today. So you are getting some production and value for that $6 million that you are spending, whereas if you just release Zeke you are still spending $6 million but have nothing to show for it.
