Idiotic, plain and simple.

Even if you cut Elliott’s base to league minimu, he’s still a nearly 7 million cap hit which is preposterous for what would essentially be a backup if Pollard is back.

These guys let loyalty get in the way of sound cap management.

Jerry wanted to keep Randy Gregory.

Stephen did not want to keep Randy Gregory.

Randy Gregory went to Denver...
Stop with the conspiracy that Stephen put that language in to drive Gregory to Denver. He did no such thing.

it wouldn’t shock me. Zeke may be willing to take a big enough salary reduction that it’s actually more financially beneficial for the cowboys than cutting him.

I can’t see him getting more than a league minimum offer anywhere else.
correct, don't bring in common sense in here.

for zeke haters they wanted him gone in 2019.. if zeke say took huge pay cut like 2yrs 12mil, isnt that what we would pay him to be sitting at home? i not capo expert but that makes sense to me.

Why not!!

Because if you tag Pollard and even get Elliott to take a pay cut all the way to league minimum base, you'd have over $18 million tied up in two TBs - one coming of a leg injury and another who has been in decline as an upper level back.

Throw in the fact free agency looks to have quality RB options AND the draft is loaded with TBs, this is a completely idiotic and stupid cap decision by Jerry and his idiot son (if they do indeed keep both - I am holding out hope one hits his head on a toilet seat or something and knocks some sense into him).

Any other team would cut Elliott at this point. Our two nitwits place way too much emphasis on loyalty.

Maybe Zeke and his agent will play hard ball and not take a big enough pay cut forcing Jerry to just cut him. One can hope.

Whether he can make it work financially is not really the question. The real issue is the Cowboys can most likely find a cheaper, better alternative in the draft or FA
its not cheaper if his deal is close to what cap hit would be for cutting him. you keep him for the same price as cutting him..

What are we worried about? The cap or the on field product?

If they dont cut Zeke he will keep getting 10-15 touches a game. We can not afford to continue wasting those downs on a shot player.
This. This is like keeping Witt for all those years and JG was too much of a coward to even take him out of the game.

It’s not about the money it’s about that he can’t play anymore

If you cut his base salary to just 12 million over the next two years instead of the the $21 million he's currently signed for, you still would have a cap hit of around $12 million (instead of 16 million) this year. So you'd save around $ 5 million which is what you'd save if you cut him pre-June 1. However, he's still on your books for next year when a cut just gets you out from under him forever. Plus, if you make him a June 1 cut, you save nearly $11 million in cap space that you can roll over into 2024 or use to sign some of those vets who wait until camp to sign.

There's also a philosophical aspect to this. At the end of the day, having a backup TB (which he would be if Pollard is back) with a $12 million cap hit is pretty preposterous. And if you throw in Pollard's tag, you'd have almost $23 million in cap charges for the TB position which is nuts, especially in an offseason with a loaded draft for TBs and a good FA pool.

They should just thank him for his service, cut him and move on.

He'd have to take a massive cut to make it worthwhile, IMO. Like cut his base from $10.9 million to $2 million or less.

Which in my mind would make sense for both sides as I'm skeptical he makes $2M on the open market. If his agent feels differently then it becomes an easy decision to cut him IMO.

cant maybe not worth it at his current deal but say 2 yrs 12 mil for player who got close to 900 yards, 3.8 YPC (sure that low but so was emits year 7 at 3.7) and 12tds(5th in the league in rushing tds) in 15 games. not that bad really and injured and that OL and play caller slowed him down, need more proof Pollard last 6 games- NO TDS, last 4 RS games no tds 51 YPG and a 3.8 YPC.. id say that Line was wasn't opening many holes and the play caller not designing and calling run plays.

asking him to take 2mil when ,if cut, he can make close to 6?He could literally take the minimum elsewhere plus the 5mil we owe him and make his bag?umm ok rbs at his production level last year made 4-6mil..

I'M not on either side of this debate really, IDC we could cut both and roll with new set of backs for all i care but lets keep facts in this debate over the money.

As stated it’s not about that. It’s about him being a progress stopper for other RB’s. Malik should have gotten way more carries than he did. They can’t afford to go another year with the TP and Zeke as the only backs they will play.

Stop using comparisons to TBs who played three decades ago. The game is different.

Huh?

If we cut him, we don't owe him any money. What $5 million are you talking about?

The only cash Dallas has to pay him is his base salary in 2023. If they cut him, they owe him nothing.
