The Saints won the Superbowl because they had perhaps the best QB in the league in 2009. In vacuum Drew Brees is probably not better than Peyton Manning, but for this year he was. In an era where the team who passes the ball most efficiently will win the majority of their games, Drew Brees is just what the doctor ordered. The next time Tony Romo is the best QB in the league, will be the first time and I don't think there will ever be a point where that is the case.
As far as their offensive line goes, they are above average. Jermon Bushrod is not particularly good and Stinchcomb is JAG, but their interior is flat out dominant. Jahri Evans and Carl Nicks probably make up the best combination of guards in the league. In contrast to Dallas, who has like 1 and a half good interior lineman and two poor starting tackles.
As far their defense goes, they were incredible at taking the ball away and they were one of the best teams against the pass (in the sense that they had a high defensive passer rating, top 3 actually). Dallas was not only poor at taking the ball away, but they had a poor defensive passer rating.
If you have one of the best passing teams and one of the best at stopping the pass, you will win games. It's that simple really.
They did not have a poor defensive passer rating. But they did give up the second fewest points in football.
You can slice and dice it any way you want. Second fewest point surrendered is just that. Would I like more forced TOs? Certainly.
But I'll take the exact same defensive performance we had this year every single time out.
