Gibbs won a Superbowl in Washington.. If that doesn't speak to his greatness than nothing will.

Gibbs and Washington...neither on the top shelf of the NFL.

12 SB wins out of the 49. Almost 25%. Not to mention how many times they all been to the SB.
What is it, another 5 or 6 times. So 17 or 18 times.
I don't think any other division can come close. Maybe the AFC East. About 15 times, but maybe 7 or 8 wins.

I didn't look it up, just going off of memory.

The reason Gibbs is regarded so highly is he won his 3 SB's with 3 average QB's Joe Theismann, Mark Rypien and Doug Williams. Most great HOF head coaches had a HOF QB leading them to championships. Landry would have never won a SB had he not had Roger Staubach as his QB. Gibbs and Parcells are 2 of the only great HOF coaches I can think of who won SB's without having a great QB.

One can spin it that way if they choose, but isn't this a team game.....Gibbs won a SB with a flash in the pan RB who had a record setting fame too, but that's not the point.
It's a coach having a team, not just a QB.
Ravens won a SB with Dilfer, so you can't say it's just the great coaches won without a great QB.

Didn't 2 of their Lombardi trophies come in strike shortened seasons?

Yes in 82 and 87 but I really don't think that takes anything away from those championships. You have to be a very well coached team to survive a strike and have a successful season. You're playing part of the season with scrubs and have to be able to field a team with whatever players you can scrape up to stay afloat.

Joe G*bbs? He gets an asterisk for his Superbowl record and an asterisk for the reputation-tarnish he threw on his own record coming back for Snyder. I think I'll take Landry.

Plus, that wasn't pass interference on Benny Barnes, anyway. :)

I don't see that as being so scandalous. Landry had some serious long-term success and did take Dallas to five total Super Bowls, so I would personally lean towards him. But, if someone wants to make the claim that the rings are what matters then Gibbs won three and if it was so easy to win during those two strike years then I sure as heck wish Landry had grabbed another one over Joe Gibbs. That NFC Championship game loss to the Commanders in 83 was just heartbreaking.

Just a few both from the NFC East and elsewhere I would rate ahead of Gibbs.

Don't take it wrong Super Bowls do matter, but IMHO it's not the only rating for a HC in the NFL.

Just heard this on ESPN radio while sitting at my desk working so I don't have a link.
I'm not even sure who is all on the panel, but they are talking about Chip Kelly being racist and whatnot, when one of them (possibly SAS) says that some in the media are treating him like he is a better coach than Joe Gibbs who is the best coach in the history of the NFC EAST.

Is it possible that this is the consensus. Could he really be regarded as better than Tom Landry?

Just thought I would share, it struck me as funny at first, but then I think he was being serious.

Strange thoughts from a strange dude

Landry and Jimmy Johnson were better.

I don't know why that in itself is automatically greatness.

He had one of the very best owners ever in sports in Jack Kent Cooke. They far outspent every team in the league not named the SF 49ers.

I think he was a great coach myself. But, I wouldn't put him in the category of a Tom Landry who changed the way the game was played thru several different things he did and won 2 Super Bowls during non-strike seasons and may have won 5 Super Bowls if it weren't the for the Steelers.

I think Gibbs is more linked with Parcells since they were about the same age. I think Parcells did more with less, but also had an issue with taking less talented players because often times more talented players didn't fit in with him and his schemes. But Parcells is the greatest developer of QB's I've ever seen. I would probably go with Gibbs over Parcells due to longevity and not having down years.
