Joe Staley at #22?

Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan: Rarely are NFL scouts excited about the individual workouts put forth by offensive linemen, but in the case of Staley, the attention is well deserved. After weighing in at 304 pounds, Staley was clocked anywhere from a 4.79 to 4.82 in the 40-yard dash and was equally impressive in the shuttle (4.30) and three-cone drills (7.17). Each was the best time by any offensive lineman in the 2007 draft. Some are characterizing Staley's performance as the most impressive one ever done by an offensive lineman.

I guess opinions vary.

Opinions do vary but you'd still be hard pressed to find many who think that he's the 22nd best player in the draft.

Impressive he may be, but that doesn't mean that others aren't MORE impressive. Bowe is impressive too. Nelson is impressive too.

Both are better than Staley.

That's subjective as well. It depends on what you feel the team's biggest need is.

If you feel it's receiver, Bowe is a good choice - however the team has Owens and Glenn under contract.

If you feel it's safety, the team may be signing Ken Hamlin to start at FS and they still seem to like Pat Watkins.

And if you feel it's OLT, Flozell Adams is entering the final year of his current contract meaning you have to either give him a new deal or get his replacement. (this is the camp I'm in)

A nice thing is that the team seems to have flexibility to go in a lot of different directions depending on the players available at #22.

But personally, I would like to see the team make a commitment to having a solid left tackle in place.

Hence why I agreed opinions vary.

It's just that they are slighted towards one of the sides.

And that side is the side that has Bowe and Nelson ahead of Staley.

Need should not make you take an inferior player over a superior one.

I'd love to find one somewhere.

But it'd be pretty insane to take Staley over Bowe.

I think that some of you might be surprised at the interest in Joe Staley from NFL teams. He might very well get drafted in the first round. He's quietly becoming very hot it would seem. I had hoped he might be available in the 2nd but now I don't know. He is the OL I am most interested in in this draft.

what he works out like and what he plays like are two entirely different things

he might be a good player eventually, but he is not the 22nd best player in this draft and isnt worth a first rd pick

I agree on Bowe and Nelson...and there's alot of guys I'd draft at 22 before Staley...I wouldnt be disappointed if we drafted him in the 2nd, but he not somebody we should be drafting in rd one

Sounds like the Mike Mamula of offensive linemen.

Out of curiousity, has anyone seen him play? I know I haven't.

not many people match Staley's pro-potential in this draft

FYI, Mel Kiper has him as the 21st rated player, Mike Mayock has Staley as the 3rd best OT

Dbair has probably never even seen him play...always has a strong opinion, but it's usually wortless

I'm sure most teams are interested in him, but I doubt he's going in round one unless its at the very end of the round and by a team that doesnt need him to play right away

and virtually every draft guide I've seen has him rated much lower than that...one has him rated as a 3rd rd pick

Dbair thinks every one is terrible.

I usually ignore what he has to say.

And since when are these draft guides noted for their uncanny accuracy?

:lmao2: those were printed BEFORE his tremendous workout, they all say that Jason HIll runs in the 4.5 range, sorry bro, you're way out of the loop on this one

And he's got Bowe at 19.

are they any better/worse than Kiper and Mayock?

yes, its a known fact that I think players like Ware, RW, Newman, Romo, Owens, Witten, Gurode, Henry, Columbo, Carpenter, Ayodele and etc etc are all "terrible"

Probably worse judging from the ones I have read this year.

Nobody, not Kiper, not Mayock and not even the late Joel Buchsbaum could be completely right. Even GMs aren't right all of the time.

But we have to trust these opinions in many cases because we have not seen many of these unknown players actually play.

You just happen to have chosen the ones that gel with your negative opinion. There has been a lot of positive press about this player.
