My point is.... I'm taking the BPA at 22.

That's not Staley, most likely.

you take Bowe at 22 and I take Staley at 22, how about that? it's 3 slots in differential, it's not like we're deciding whether to draft Calvin Johnson, or Marshawn Lynch

He's probably a year away, but get him in a pro program and this kid has the ability to play OT for 10 years. I'd entertain him if we could trade down a few spots and get another 3rd.

Probably worse judging from the ones I have read this year.

Nobody, not Kiper, not Mayock and not even the late Joel Buchsbaum could be completely right. Even GMs aren't right all of the time.

But we have to trust these opinions in many cases because we have not seen many of these unknown players actually play.

You just happen to have chosen the ones that gel with your negative opinion. There has been a lot of positive press about this player.

what negative opinion? I only said he wasnt worth picking at 22...I didnt say the guy was garbage and should be undrafted

as for choosing the ones that "gel with your negative opinion" couldnt it likewise be said then that some are "choosing ones to agree with their positive opinion"???

I'm fine if we end up picking the guy, I just dont want to spend the 22nd pick on a guy that I think clearly isnt the 22nd best player in the draft, especially when we dont have a glaring hole at that position...IMO you reach for a guy and maybe overdraft somebody when you NEED that position and there's nobody else available...our teams doesnt fall into that description now

quite a few times. Last season I saw his team, CMU play Boston College down to the last minute and the ESPN guys raved about him. (no sacks) Same when they played Univ. of Michigan-again, very solid performance. Lastly, I saw him play against Cinci in the Motor City Bowl-dominated-no sacks. It's also my understanding he had a great Senior Bowl and week of practices there as well. Of course, his competition wasn't great in the Mid American Conference (MAC) BUT, it didn't hurt Chad Pennington or Ben Rothlisburger or Randy Moss or Jack Lambert......etc............good mid major conference. I agree with this original poster, he could be taken by us if we fall in love with him. Groom him for Flo's position and have McQuistan back him up. Very real possibility. People will hoot and holler, but I believe in the kid.;)

my assertion? what assertion? that I wouldn't mind Staley at 22? I'm sorry you don't want to see that printed, but get over it

btw, chew on this

Joe Staley, OT, Central Michigan: A pulled hamstring kept Staley from working out at the Combine. At that time, he was being bandied about by NFL insiders as a potential first-round pick. After a Pro Day performance that one long-time scout I spoke to classified "as the best workout I've ever seen from an offensive lineman," the question isn't if the former Chippewa makes the first round, but how high he goes. Staley's 40-yard dash (4.80), shuttle (4.30), and three-cone drill (7.17) were each the fastest recorded by an offensive lineman in the 2007 draft class. Staley is hardly just a workout warrior. Not only did he start 39 games for Central Michigan, he also held his own at the Senior Bowl.

I'm sure most teams are interested in him, but I doubt he's going in round one unless its at the very end of the round and by a team that doesnt need him to play right away

David

I don't know where he will go but I do know that there are several teams who see him as the third rated LT prospect in this draft behind Levi Brown and rising.

You're the one that is getting all huffy.

I've even admitted that Staley is a good player.

Just not one of the top 22.

what he works out like and what he plays like are two entirely different things

he might be a good player eventually, but he is not the 22nd best player in this draft and isnt worth a first rd pick

David

Spare us the absolutes know-it-all. You're not nearly as smart as you think you are.

and virtually every draft guide I've seen has him rated much lower than that...one has him rated as a 3rd rd pick

David

Where do they have Ryan Leaf rated?

How about looking up Joey Harrington for me?

Brady Quinn is ranked by some as the 3rd best QB. Anybody want to place a wager on him being the 3rd QB drafted?

I wouldn't mind a trade down to, say, #28, grab an extra 3rd rounder and then select Staley. Something like...

1> Joe Staley (OT)
2> DeMarcus Tyler (NT)
3> Fred Bennet/Tarrell Brown (CB)
3> Zak DeOssi (LB)
4> David Clowney (WR)
5> Doug Datish (C)

(Clowney is gonna be a steal for someone.)

If Jarvis Moss or Chris Houston is still on the board at #22, though, he's my preference.

see my sig? click the link and scroll down to bottom of the 1st page, I have a scenario worked out that involves trading down and selecting Staley

I've never seen Staley play. I remember reading one draft website say that he lacked a mean streak....and wasn't that aggressive.

I hate reading that about linemen....offense or defense.

But like I said. I've never seen him play. I'm not about to go ga-ga over him because of his workouts. I remember Mike Mamula, Leif Larsson, and Sylvester Morris. I think there are a lot of people on this board that look at workout numbers and begin drooling without having seen a guy play one down of football.

I know that one guy has seen him on this board. Apparently, he impressed that poster. So, that's one feather in Staley's cap....if Kiper and Mayock like him, then he can't be that bad.

I think a lot of us that haven't seen him, are nervous about him. If we wind up drafting him, then I'll just trust that our scouts have done their homework.
