I'm not sure if this Broaddus character is legit or not....however....

I've been playing guitar for 35 years. I can hand you a guitar and tell almost immediately if you have skill or not. You don't even have to plug in. Just the way you hold it and strum a few chords or scales. No band or stadium show needed.

So a real football expert would be able to detect good skills or flaws even without pads....in the same manner, I would think.

Having said that....certainly very early....give the kid at least TC sheesh!
Broaddus is legit ex scout but hes been wrong before

Of course you could tell that from someone who never played or barely played, but could you tell just from what you described if a guy was playing for 15 years and was one of the top 1,000-2,000 guitarists in the world but not one of the top 160? You don't get drafted in the NFL if you "just picked a guitar up for the first time". A lot of guys come in with various flaws and make up for them in other ways.

But, anyway, IMO judging certain positions before the pads come on in a very bad idea and OL is for sure one of those positions to me

Yet another high risk move by the Jones boys thinking their draft picks will fix all that ails them. Given Ball's lack of time last year due to injury, it would have been smart for the Cowboys to bring in a vet OT type in FA. There were quite a few out there. Instead, they chucked their starting RT to the curb, installed their swing OT as the new starting RT and basically have turned the backup OT position (which is pretty important here given Smith's injury issues) to a guy who hasn't played in over a year or a draft pick.

They will never, ever learn. But on the positive we are sitting on like $24 million in cap space, so we have that going for us.

You make a good point. Certainly guitar playing and music is much different than high level professional sports. More subjective....right?

But I do stand by my statement. People here ACTING like experts...but without any actual NFL experience.....might ACT like they know everything but they don't. We certainly fight like we do.

But maybe....REAL "experts" in the NFL professional field for years and decades.....might be able to do just such a thing. My analogy is of course simplified. They can just tell the subtleties. How they have seen other high level players run thse drills and how, say...Ball...runs them. I would think people can see the difference. They have been doing it in the trenches for a LONG time!

I don't think it means he's a lost cause. And as I said I don't necessarily believe Broaddus is the ultimate authority. Some of these people follow players from 7th grade to hall of fame. See?

Broaddus is wrong just about as much as he’s right on prospects. That’s both in the draft and when watching Cowboys players in camp. Which, of course, means that taking his analysis on a player is about as accurate as flipping a coin.

To me, when I hear Broaddus saying either good or bad about someone… I pretty much just act like I never heard it at all, because it’s 50/50 on if he’s accurate or not.
That would be a good average for a baseball player. :)

you don't bring in vets so they can play in minicamps - you use the minis to see what you have then make a move if you have a hole before TC.

They don't even have pads on.

Yeah, too early to press the panic button on this guy. Hope he improves with practices and i am sure he will be given every opportunity to play in PS games. Much like Steele. But he better stay healthy or else this all goes kaput for him.

The comments can all be traced back to 1 source...Broaddus.

Fans/media don't know the status of Josh Ball.

Mini-Camps and OTAs

The depth chart is all that we know:

LT
Tyron
Tyler
Waldo

RT
Steele
Ball
They gonna get Dak crushed. OT needs help.

Appreciate all the passion from everyone and wanting him to be the next great thing, but let's be realistic. Probably in his place for a reason. Just saying - don't be shocked if he ends up in the long line of backups that never made it to the top. And in this case - I'm just defining top as an effective backup swing tackle.

It’s early, but the returns from OTA’s and minicamp don’t sound super promising surrounding Ball’s year two development. The rumors out of camp painted a picture of a guy still struggling with strength and technical issues when dealing with speed and power as a pass protector and run blocker. While that’s not great news for the Cowboys swing tackle outlook, it’s still early and a lot of times training camp will tell the real story, especially for guys going into their second year. The Cowboys need Ball to step up and earn the swing tackle job, because rookie Matt Waletzko and veteran Aviante Collins are guys who fans shouldn’t feel good about if they are asked to play much in 2022.

The guy has no &alls

I miss Collins already... Of all the loses this offseason, I think he was the one we should have signed. Oline is one of the most important ways you build trust with a QB and offense. Better to have a established offensive line with drafted backups learning than throw rookies into the mix with no competition.
