I think he will have less control than his father. I fully expect the military heads in NK to be running the show not a 20 something year old. They will use him as a token. However I don't know how much of one he is when the people of NK are constantly trying to escape into China but they also know punishment is extreamly harsh when they are caught. Heck even if you make it the punishment falls to your family.

He's the equivalent of a 4-star General in the NK Army. I doubt they'll use him as a figurehead.

Yes and they could name him the queen of NK it is still only a title and there are many of the top commanders who are top generals that have true control over the military.

His father made him a 4 star general well daddy is dead and I would think many of the old guard will have a lot more say of what takes place than Jr.

Kim Jong Il... the man was a true legend in his own mind...

Here are actual claims in his biography and elsewhere...
  • According to his biography, he first picked up a golf club in 1994, at North Korea's only golf course, and shot a 38-under par round that included no fewer than 11 holes in one. Satisfied with his performance, he reportedly immediately declared his retirement from the sport.
  • According to his official biographers, his birth in Baekdu Mountain was prophesied by a swallow and heralded with a double rainbow and a new star in the heavens.
  • He was hailed as a demigod in North Korea while South Korea portrayed him as a vain playboy with a penchant for bouffant hair, jumpsuits and platform shoes designed to make him look taller. (he was 5'2")
  • His private train journeys were as luxurious as befitted a leader of North Korea, despite the millions left behind starving due to famine: one Russian emissary who traveled across Russia by train with Kim described how live lobsters were airlifted daily to his train.
  • Because, at his death, his father was named "Eternal President," Kim never officially became president of North Korea.
  • At university it was claimed in his biography that he wrote no fewer than 1,500 books in three years
  • His all time favorites movies included Rambo, Friday the 13th, Godzilla and The Eternal Bosom of Hot Love.
  • Kim also apparently composed six operas and enjoyed staging musicals.
  • He reportedly spread the myth across North Korea that he could control the weather with his moods, as if by magic
  • He forced waitresses at restaurants frequented by foreigners in Pyongyang to have cosmetic surgery in order to appear more "western".
  • He reportedly drank $698,895 of cognac each year in a country where average income was about $900.79.
  • A personality evaluation report on him, compiled by psychiatrists suggested that the "big six" group of personality disorders - sadistic, paranoid, antisocial, narcissistic, schizoid and schizotypal - which were shared by dictators Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Saddam Hussein were also dominant in the late North Korean leader.
  • A recent new list of luxury imports now also reveals a penchant for Chinese dolphins, French poodles, and African aphrodisiacs and is said to have developed a palate for Donkey meat as well lobster and expensive French wine.
  • Minju Joson, a North Korean newspaper, reported once that Kim invented a product described as "double bread with meat" and created factories to produce them in order to feed his students and teachers. Some observers noted it was very similar to an American-hamburger.

Is short man's complex to blame for some crazy folks in history?

Hitler = 5-7" to 5'-8" depending on who's accurate

Napoleon = 5'-6"

Kim Jong Il = 5'-2"

Regardless.

The times of dictatorships are over.
Maybe not literally today but they will soon be a thing of the past.

They are dropping like flies... but force or by natural death in this case.

Is anyone familiar with the way the NK military is set up? I remember watching a show around 9/11 talking about how if a conflict broke out, that millions would die within hours because NK & SK could unleash a ridiculous amount of mortars within minutes.

They made it sound like NK is crazy enough to commit suicide by unleashing everything they've got if a conflict were to erupt.

It sounded like a real rock and a hard place problem that would be very bloody if attempted to solve militarily.

Its amazing how unchecked power has a way of making human beings bat-**** crazy.

I wonder how the average man would turn out if thrust into the same position of power. I'd like to think I would be different, but who knows unless I was actually in that situation.

Just look back at the Korean war.

According to the data from the US Department of Defense, the United States had suffered 33,686 battle deaths, along with 2,830 non-battle deaths during the Korean War and 8,176 missing in action. Western sources estimate the PVA had suffered between 100,000 to 1,500,000 deaths (most estimate some 400,000 killed), while the KPA had suffered between 214,000 to 520,000 deaths (most estimate some 500,000). Between some 245,000 to 415,000 South Korean civilian deaths were also suggested, and the entire civilian casualty during the war were estimated from 1,500,000 to 3,000,000 (most sources estimate some 2,000,000 killed).

If it occurred today, it would be far worse.

If conflict broke out Seoul would be wiped out quickly. However I also think much of North Korea population would turn on their own Government. After all things are much different now than when the war took place in the 50's. These people are living in condition where starvations has claimed 3.5 million since the 90's

China isn't going to allow any of that to happen. They've stood by NK as it was, with only suggestions to reform. They'll probably go to lengths insure there isn't some sort of bloodbath on their border.

China does not want to deal with the refuge issue that a war would create. China does not do much in terms of aiding the people of NK. NK still relies on SK to provide humanitarian aid and use the threat of conflict to get it. Same with the US any negotiation with the US involves us giving them aid.

Let me also say China also is interested in becoming an economical power and US is one of their best costumers they will not jeopardize that in the long run.

I have no interest in seeing the US create a war with NK however I do think sooner or later conflict will resume unless NK changes

I think it is in China best interest for conflict to be avoided but I don't think China would get as engaged as they did in the 50's where it was armed conflict between China and the US.

No I don't think they'll let it come to military blows. With all the direct contact Kim had, along with his son, to China, I'm betting China will have some serious influence on how they behave.

You would think they would be doing more to prevent hunger that is taking place now. In my view this is what will cause the unrest and eventually resumed conflict.

With their supposed humanitarian record, I'm sure they don't care about the hungry of another nation, just the expedience of 'peace'. Lil' Un will probably provide enough of the status quo to maintain that 'peace': act crazy and everyone will be afraid.
