La'el Collins Thread - Cleared post 767; visited Cowboys - 05/06/15

Is Collins a "problem guy" though? So far this is the only thing resembling trouble he's been involved in, and it very well may be that he had nothing to do with this, so I don't see how that is much of an advantage.

I don't see how we get him. We have two starting tackles and just drafted one in the third round. He's a guy who can come in and start from day one and will probably look to go to a team where he will have a chance to do that.

Tbh I think he's a guard at this level.

@mikefreemanNFL: Team personnel man: "We are all watching this (La'el Collins) situation closely. Every team. If he's cleared, every team wants him."

Will be like college recruiting all over again. He should hold a press conference and pull a hat from underneath the table. "I'm signing with ........".

He won't be handed a job but he can earn a starting job here.

I think he can absolutely step in and replace Leary at LG. That's not a knock on Leary, but an endorsement of how good I think Collins is, and can be.

There are few better situations to walk into than stepping in between a Pro Bowl Left Tackle and Pro Bowl Center.

If we signed Collins, I bet there are a few teams out there with spare RBs who would be interested in either Leary or Green.

Sign Collins and trade Leary and a late pick or Claiborne for Peterson

In all seriousness, Leary's value is probably pretty high since he's a core member of this vaunted o-line. If teams shelled out big money for guys like Bruce Carter and Justin Durant, then Leary absolutely has value. If we signed Collins, use that value plus a future pick to get a good RB in here.

No reason for him to sign with us. He can go somewhere in Florida and start day one. I think the states with no state tax are more appealing

You could be right but I don't think his market is very high right now. I suspect only a handfull of teams will even consider giving him a chance before his baggage is settled.

Things he should look at when signing.

1. Chance to start immediately
2. A superbowl contender
3. A team that has a history of extending players early
4. A team with a young talented roster.

Dallas offers at least 3 of these 4 and imo he could beat out either Free or Leary. He also would have the benefit of playing with 3 other young All-Pro caliber OL.

The contract is an absolute non issue. He's going to get whatever a team has left in signing bonus $, which is probably 20-30k max. He'll also get a 3 year deal minimum deal with it being fully guaranteed. The contract will not be a factor. I saw several tweets saying if he's cleared at least 20 teams are prepared to offer him the 3 years fully guaranteed. It's going to come down to where he wants to play and nothing else. I'll give Jerry the salesman every benefit of the doubt to have us as a top suitor for Collins.

Looking like the poor guy got screwed big time. But, unfortunate situation all around.

Anyone know his favorite team growing up? If he's getting to choose, that could be a factor.

He's from Louisiana, so obviously it could be the Saints. But tons of Cowboys fans there...

They changed the rules so you cant give a big signing bonus like we did with Leary.

The League does not want to incentivize not getting drafted and choosing UDFA.

The best we can do is guarantee the 3yrs/1.5m

As a RFA in 2018 he could earn 4m as a 1st round tender

Its just a matter of choice at this point

Up front contract money will likely determine it for him. A short contract with legit money so that he can get paid and can have opportunity for a new contract will probably carry the day.

To win him over, I'd make a promise to his agent that I'd cut him after his 2nd year. That might be the magic trick. That would give him Free Agent freedom and opportunity for more $.

Hearing Miami might be a favorite for him. Can offer $, a starting spot right away, and the opportunity to live in South Beach. Hard to turn down.

Broncos, Eagles, and Rams also being mention quite a bit.

@bkight13 The Cowboys didn't give Leary a large signing bonus they only guaranteed a large portion of his base salary. His signing bonus was $9k while they guaranteed $205k of his base salary. Thats similar to what Collins is likely to get except his base salary will likely be fully guaranteed. Teams only have 86k total to split amoung all udfa in signing bonus, but can guarantee any portion of his base salary.

I thought all UDFA contracts are for 3 years? Pretty sure thats accurate. I've read at least 20 teams are prepared to offer him a fully guaranteed 3 year minimum deal so I don't think contract figures will be a factor.

UDFAs can sign an extension after 2 years as opposed to the drafted players who can only extend after the 3rd year. There would be no reason to tell him this. After his 2nd season tell him you'll look to extend him. Thats what he would want to hear. I sincerely doubt a team is just going to cut him after next year and limit their ability to re-sign him when they can exclusively look to extend him anyways.
