Was this the only off-the-field issue for Collins? I wonder if he can turn this into a positive by getting a big contract earlier than if he was drafted.

Miami just last year signed Branden Albert to a five year deal for $47 million.

Jason Peters' contract runs through 2019.

As I've said, the thoughts of someone handing him their LT job just aren't there.

While I'm certainly looking at it as a fan, I'm also looking at it from a realistic perspective too.

Rex seem to be eager, Dallas is loaded on OL are you telling me other teams are not in serious need of OT? Heck Dallas may have the best in the NFL right now meaning there are many others around the league looking to improve greatly. Fact is the LT job in Dallas is more secure than any team in the NFL, Smith is not going anywhere that position should be locked down for some time.
Outside of homer response why would Dallas be his best choice?

I love it that Dallas approached him. You don't settle for having the best offensive line. You SECURE it.

Can you imagine if he beat out Free, and Free was actually the swing tackle? Wow.

And don't underestimate the pitch Dallas can make. Hey, you'll compete immediately for the starting job, and you can be a starter no matter what with a bunch of young guys within a year or two anyway.

I remember the play in Detroit when he didn't even leave his stance and Romo almost got killed. Since then. Haven't really cared what happened to Parnell lol

You need to re-watch that play in slow motion. Fred snapped the ball early and everyone was late off the ball, Parnell just stayed in his stance longer than the others.

I pointed that out to Bob Sturm and he responded back that he initially missed that, but that I was indeed correct.

If the Cowboys are willing to guarantee his contract, does a few thousand dollars now rather than later really mean the difference between going where you truly want to be?

why would every team not guarantee his salary?

anyone saying they'd rather have 40k right now as opposed to 88k is a bald-faced liar or is very poor at math.

the rest of this money is paid out in 17 installments per season.
the bonus is right now.
that is what he gets into a house/condo and/or provides short term for mama with.

The funny thing about this is Jerry is known for style over substance. This OL he's trying to build is pure meat and potatoes. I applaud the effort he's making to keep his QB upright.

Keeping Romo upright is the key to the season. Without substance there wont be any style.

He'll be in a position to look great for his next contract. Even if he turns out to only be ok, he'll look terrific with the o-line already in place. Then he can decide if he wants to be a part of history or wants to rake in the Benjamins.

Because in Tampa or Buffalo, nobody knows who you are.

If a tree falls in a forest...........

He'd start here pretty soon, where the lights are the brightest, and the offensive line has become a celebrity unit.

RT do not get paid what LT get paid, taking Free spot so what the money is on the other side. I agree I would love him here but all I'm seeing is talk about how it benefits the Cowboys not how it benefits Collins. Do I want him? sure I do but I do not think he will be coming to Dallas not when there are better situations for him around the NFL.

I'm saying that one of Dallas' OT positions is open for competition, as well as the LG spot. And, again, I still haven't seen an example of this team with a 'guaranteed starting Left Tackle role' waiting for Collins.

Heck Dallas may have the best in the NFL right now meaning there are many others around the league looking to improve greatly.

I agree with you, I think they are. But they are a line with two spots available for him to compete to start today. And earning a role there means you're playing alongside the best, where if you do your own job, and worry about only yourself, you can go as far as your talent takes you.

Fact is the LT job in Dallas is more secure than any team in the NFL, Smith is not going anywhere that position should be locked down for some time.

No disputing that. But, as I've said, if there are no guaranteed LT spots anywhere, Smith's LT spot is a moot point.

Outside of homer response why would Dallas be his best choice?

  1. 12-4 playoff team and possible Super Bowl contender
  2. His childhood favorite growing up
  3. Playing alongside 3 Pro Bowlers, increasing his own chances for success
  4. One of the league's most talented offenses
  5. Arguably the highest profile team in the league
  6. Two words - Jermey Parnell. Parnell signed a $32 million contract after playing 6 games on this line
  7. Randy Gregory, his fellow rookie, friend, and workout partner, with whom he shares an agent

Those are a few off the top of my head.

the position he is in will be relative to team.
if he is someone's best OL and starting at LT in 2 years he likely gets the big renegotiation after 2 years.
if he is our LG and playing well but considered the 3rd best OL on the league's most expensive OL why would dallas pay him a fortune to renegotiate.

when they could ride him for 3 full years cheap then tender him as an r1 guy for that 4th year.
Collins leverage is right now and then based purely upon his value to the team he signs with.

his goal very likely isn't hitting true free agency but getting to year 3 with a big raise.

None of which you have mentioned to be honest.

The sad part is, it wasn't an off the field issue that he was involved in. Yet some are sayi the now had an off the field issue.

The guy was a team captain and solid citizen

But yes, this would escalate when he can get his 1st non-rookie contract.

cool story bro, but the dallas cowboys disagree.
especially frederick....

dallas made their decision, never even took a minute, time to let it go man.

The Cowboys decided to give Free a 15M contract with 6M guaranteed. Parnell got 32M with 13M guaranteed. Just because Dallas signed Free does not mean that they thought he was better.

I'll admit that the contract that Parnell got was really big for a guy with less than 10 starts in the league. It's probably one of the bigger 2nd contacts ever for player with less than 10 career starts.

The only draft pick this year that was a bit forced was the 3rd round OT. I'm sure they knew there was a reasonable chance that Green could be available a round later but they didn't want to take the chance. If they're that concerned about getting an OT, I think it might indicate they think there is a high probability of Green being more than just a backup as a rookie. Jerry made a statement before the draft that OT was a big need "for a reason". He seemed to be alluding to some reason that had not been disclosed. The only reason I can imagine is that Free is not progressing well after his 2nd ankle surgery in a 1 year time frame.

I've never heard of Jerry hosting a draft prospect or free agent at his residence.

If Collins a video gamer, Jerry should let him play on the big screen at the Stadium. They say that Jerry's grandson really has a gaming system setup over there.

They had either an xbox or ps3 on the big screen when it first opened. I think it was a ps3 and Sony was a sponsor. Youtube I think has videos.

Not only that but he won't be at RT here theoretically until after he can renegotiate.
He is going to want more money after 2 years.

Dallas just paid Free 10x what it will Collins to play RT. They pay Smith 20x what it will Collins to play LT.

They are selling out with the show of love and talk of the best OL ever but there is a reason he left town without signing.

Probably going to be a lot of heartbroken Cowboys fans... but man I do hope I am wrong.

This is one of the best possible values in this league.
