La'el Collins Thread - Cleared post 767; visited Cowboys - 05/06/15

We have reports that we have interest. If we don't sign him it doesn't mean we didn't try.

We wouldn't hand him a starting job whereas other locations likely would. He would have to compete for a spot here. Depend on his personality and desire really. I heard he wanted to go to a contender. His salary is already predetermined.

Jerry should tell him they expect him to be the starter. Doug Free can't even practice as of right now.

I think any promise by any team has some limits. If he does not perform up to expectations in TC, has injury issues, etc., then no team can make an absolute guarantee.

If I were a projected top 20 player in the draft, I would not be worried about beating out Doug Free. Just show Collins 5 minutes of Doug Free tape. If he is not confident he can play better then that's a bad sign anyway.

02/17/2015 - 2015 DRAFT SCOUT PRE-COMBINE TOP 64 DRAFT PROSPECTS: 13/3. La'el Collins, OT, LSU, 6-5, 308, 5.12, 1...Here is a mean-spirited offensive lineman with potential to play right tackle or either guard position in the NFL, but does not have the pass-blocking ability needed to be a left tackle. On running plays, Collins can launch his broad, muscular frame straight forward with alarming quickness, then engage the strength of his lower body and massive hands (10 3/4 inches) to steer defenders out of harm's way. Although he can get to the next level, he is not nimble enough to be an effective open-field blocker. Collins is improving as a pass blocker, but too much aggression and not enough balance make him susceptible to both speed rushers and end/tackle games that require patience he does not have. Like most good linemen, Collins studies and understands what he sees on film and will eventually mature enough to respond correctly on the field. - Frank Cooney, The Sports Xchange

We Need this guy!!

Yeah, Doug Free is the snizit.

I think the Dolphins might be the stiffest competition and they have LT Branden Albert and last year's 1st round RT Ju'Wuan James. Other teams have guys too.

Exactly. While this overall line is arguably the best in the league, there are two positions where he can certainly compete and would likely start.

And adding another quality piece to the 'New Great Wall' would benefit the Cowboys, his linemates, and Collins personally.

It would be great to get him but I think it is highly unlikely we will. LT is the money position and in Dallas he would be behind Tyron who should be the start LT for many more years to come.

Can I ask what team you feel he would go to where he would be given the starting LT role?

I ask because I've seen numerous folks say that but nobody ever gives a true example.

I don't know what team would offer it but im sure they are out there.

This kid is a bull and has excellent feet.

He could easily play LT for a lot of franchises.

RT and LG for sure.

I hope Dallas uses him at RT.

Miami which is why Rex was out there right away courting Collins. Philly is another where Jason Peters is getting long in the tooth. I hope Dallas does get him but I'm not looking at this as a Cowboy fan I'm looking at this as a fan of football.

Word is the Pats are very interested in him as well. Hopefully, Jerry won't let him leave the building without signing.

Currently it is reported 10 teams looking to get Collins. Not trying to rain on anyone’s parade but if you are a ball player you are looking at where you will have the best chance to play your position and that is LT, the position we all know make more money than the other spots along the OL. If he chooses Dallas great I would love to have him but I don't think it will happen.

The funny thing about this is Jerry is known for style over substance. This OL he's trying to build is pure meat and potatoes. I applaud the effort he's making to keep his QB upright.

That and he wants that 4th SB. I think he knows the best chance is in the next 2 years. Any and all talent that will get the team closer to that trophy, he will look into and look into hard.
